Okay so I don't really know how to calculate these, but figured perhaps someone can.

Let's presume a Talos is firing two Haywire Blasters at a house Raven Castellan, and a Skyweaver is firing it's Haywire Cannon.

How much average damage do each cause?

Talos does 2xD3 shots hitting on 4+, and any To Wound of 4+ is a single Mortal Wound, a 6+ is D3 Mortal Wounds.
Skyweaver does D6 shots hitting on 3+, and any To Wound of 4+ is a single Mortal Wound, a 6+ is D3 Mortal Wounds.

And if you want to go mad, calculate the same averages against a house Thanaris Castellan, which has a 6+ "Feel No Pain" against each Mortal Wound.

If someone can do it, thanks a lot. I sure as hell can't.

I get 1.3333333 MW\s for talon, 1.555 for skyweaver. Multiply both by 0.8333333 for thanaris one.

Could be wrong though.

tneva has the right results.

A D3 has an average of 2 shots, giving 4 average shots from the Talos.
4+ to hit means half of those hit, giving 2.
Then to wound. Think of it as the possible results on a D6.
Results of 1, 2, 3 do nothing. 4, 5 do a single mortal wound. 6 does D3 mortal wounds, which averages 2.
4 and 5 are two out of the six sides of a D6, meaning you get one mortal wound 1/3 of the time. 6 is one of the six sides, meaning 1/6 of the time you get 2 mortal wounds. You just need to add these results together.
2 * 1/3 + 2 * 1/6 * 2 = 1.3333

A 6+ FNP means each point of damage goes through 5/6ths of the time. So 1.33333 * 5/6 = 1.111111

Yes that's all correct, except that the Taranis FNP doesn't work against mortal wounds, so it's affected just the same as everything else.

Of course a Skyweaver costs roughly half what a Talos does, but is much less tough and less dangerous in cc... but faster. A Few of each is certainly a thought.

Haywire does regular damage in addition to the MWs doesn't it?

Sometimes, you just gotta take something cause the model is freakin cool...

Add a Farseer with Doom. Always a Farseer with Doom if you have lots of "on a wound roll of x..."

Even better take a Farseer and also a Warlock with Jinx / Protect. Use +1 casting stratagem, so it goes of on a 6. Now you have reroll wounds and -1 to all saves.

Now watch the Knight melt against Haywire (and melta and whatever...)

Cheers. Forgot about the normal damage in addition to the MW's, but it's gonna be a smaller difference against a Castellan.

You sure the Thanaris FNP doesn't work against Mortal Wounds? I was under the impression all of the "FNP" abilities work against Mortal Wounds, because they are not saving throws, which Mortal Wounds ignore.

Taranis FNP specifically states it doesn't work vs mortal wounds.

Yeah I play Taranis, so I’m familiar with it. Haywire is not my friend.

The early rumours were that the Taranis trait would give FNP only against mortal wounds, which would have been seriously weak. This was a problem as I already had four knights painted as Taranis!

I was pretty pleased when the codex dropped and I got to see the real rules. It adds a lot of wounds to an army, especially when my dead knights stand back up again.

As for the normal wounds that haywire weapons do, yes they are a factor. These S4 guns need a 6 to wound knights though. What that leads to is that a roll of a 6 wound not only does D3 damage, but it really does D3+0.5, because you get a 4+ save against the “normal” wound. And of course as a Taranis player I get to reduce that to something like D3+0.42.

I honestly feel like i should take skyweavers and mix in harlequins with my dark eldar.

The potential of those bikes seems very incredible but i'd need to review it over a few times. I don't exactly get to read the harlie book outside of looking at the GW copy.

Doom let's you reroll wounds against the target.

The way the math works for re-rolls to wound, it helps you more when you have a lot chance of wounding.

If you normally wound on 2s, doom is only a 16% increase in wounds, but if you wound on 6s, it increases your wounds by 83%, with weapons that wound on 3, 4, or 5 ranging in increases between those two values.

This means that weapons that would normally wound on 5s or 6s suddenly become worth using, and weapons that proc on high wound rolls proc a lot more than normal. This is why shooting shuriken or haywire weapons at doomed targets tends to be so devastating, because you get a lot more chances for them to proc.

It helps poison weapons some (adding 83% damage) but it's not the most ideal weapon for it.
