Does the name Monsterpocalypse ring a bell?
Ten years ago it was a pre-painted collectable miniatures game released by Privateer Press. The idea was you'd play as giant monsters, creatures and robots trying to destroy or defend a city. It looked like a really cool game, with a really interesting concept, but the pre-painted and blind bag aspect of it put a lot of people off. Myself included.
Well, it's back and it looks like they've learned from their mistakes.
The new version of Monsterpocalypse releasing this fall is a hobby miniatures game. The models will no longer come pre-assembled and painted and will not be sold in blind-buy boxes. Instead, players will purchase the models they want and then assemble, customize, and paint them to create a force that is uniquely their own.

The miniatures we've seen so far all look incredible and the core rules are available for free. I've yet to have a proper look through the rules myself, but from what I can tell the general reaction is very positive.
So far one faction each for the Protectors and Destroyers have been announced and shown. For Protectors we have G.U.A.R.D. and for Destroyers we have Planet Eaters. These both look really great, but from what I've seen more factions wont be far behind. According to what I've found online, we'll have:
Cthul and Syndicate in October
Martians and Terrasaurs in December
With building minis being released in November.

I'm really excited for this one guys. I always wanted to play the original incarnation of the game, but the pre-built, pre-painted, blind buying put me off. That and the models and their paint jobs were... Not the best. This new version has already fixed that. If the rules are solid and the future released are all the same quality of what we've seen so far I can see it really taking off. I just hope enough people see it and pick it up.

Did anyone play the original game? Anyone interested in the new one?
Here's a link to the site. It has the rules, an FAQ and some other stuff. If you want a better look at some on the miniatures, there's a bunch of the Privateer Press Instagram page.

As a side note, I seem to remember there was brief talks of a Monsterpocalypse movie back in the day. I think Tim Burton was attached to it in some way. I can only assume that's dead.

MonPoc is a longstanding favorite of mine, playing it now and again through the years since it died. Really excited for the new version. I got out the old models after seeing the new stats from GenCon and gave it a few plays and overall I'm really happy with it. Nothing has REALLY changed, even stats for the most part, but it feels like a pretty nice upgrade regardless.

The cards alone are a massive QoL improvement, but there's a lot of little things I'm glad to see. Monsters DEF has seen a nice buff, as have their passive boost dice, which means they're roughly the same vs each other, but its far less viable to shoot them down with units. Really though, there's just a lot of little improvements and overall, its the game I've always loved, just presented cleaner in the rules department.

I take it you'll be picking up the new version then?
How do you think it'll do? Will it build up a following to keep it going?

I'll be picking it up for sure. How it will do? Honestly not sure. I've gotten a good amount of interest locally when I've broken out my old stuff, but the limited launch might really hurt, and people are going to throw fits about buying buildings. I'm a little worried about pushing the game at launch, as I really think it won't be strong enough to build a following until the end of the year.

My test games with the new rules have been a lot of fun though. The game hasn't lost a bit of what made me fall in love with it in the first place.

I'm kind of worried because I've heard no one speak about it locally. When I've brought it up, no ones known what I've been talking about. I've explained it a bit and some people seem interested at least.
Why do you think people will throw fits about the buildings?

I was thinking of waiting till December to get into it, so I could start playing as Martians, but I feel kinda bad wanting to support the game but not getting in on it at launch..

The buildings are looking fairly expensive at $13-24 a piece. They also look totally worth it, but its going to give people pause, particularly if they feel like they've got to get everything. You don't and probably even shouldn't try, but that's not the way people work. One thing I'm getting really excited about is building a 20ish model unit pool and just buying random monsters for it. I kind of actively disliked this in the original version, but painting things in a shared scheme makes this feel rather exciting. For example, I've never really loved Terrasaurs. The units just didn't excite me, but I'm getting really hyped about the idea of Notzilla stomping around supported by tanks and planes and stuff.

Originally I was thinking Protectors only, but extending this "base army, varied monsters" idea to Destroyers actually has me rather excited for them as well. A giant Planet Eater space monster supported by a bunch of alien flying saucers sounds awesome when I think about it, particularly if I paint up the Planet eater carapace as the same color as the plates on the Martian ships. You'll need the starter anyway for buildings and dice and the map, so if you want to play the Martians in December, I'd just pick up enough to run the Planet Eaters now with plans to tie it into your martians under a general "alien invaders" theme.

Hmm, good point on the building. The sculpt on the them is really good though, hopefully that'll stop some grumbling. And like you said, you don't need everything that comes out.
I'm totally with you on being excited to paint these things. I already have a few ideas floating around my head. Mixing all the different stuff together under a similar paint scheme sounds awesome.
It didn't take much but I think you've talked me around to picking up the starter box

I picked up an Ebay lot of buildings for the new game, as the only difference (so far) is the change of the base. The original game had a black base with an icon line, while the new ones are clear plastic. Litko will help here. But I much prefer the older, pre-painted buildings with glassy windows.

Once I get the new rules and see how much of a scale change there is (doesn't appear to be much) I may go in for some of the older cases and then have Litko cut me new ones. The old stuff is cheap and pre-painted...

Just ordered my Planet Eater starter and 1 ea of the 2 boosters!

A lot of the buildings hold up pretty well, though the old skyscrapers are kind of awful. They're clearly designed to appear tall on their own, but they're not actually taller than other buildings so they're just kind of skinny and leave big gaps in the map around them. The new ones have a more convincing size, both in terms of actual size and details like how many windows there are.

I figured that I would necro this thread.

The game has been around for a few months. Various minis have sold out at online shops periodically, which I suppose is good. However, there is not much of a local scene around here, and it is also rather quiet online.

Are any dakkanauts playing it?

I've been playing it with my 1st edition stuff, mostly waiting on a few key releases before upgrading to 2nd. Really happy with the rules so far. The main hangup is honestly just that I'm committed to reducing my pile of shame right now and this game will quickly put me way way behind on that.

Pile of shame or hobby shrine? Mine has been building since the 80s.

I have the new Gorghadra starter. Maybe I will pick up some other stuff and run some demos.

Been having a blast with it here. Been running demos for people and a good number have picked it up. Running the first tournament after Xmas when all six factions should have their first monster out. Main supply issue has been the PE starter box which we just can’t seem to get in hardly any at all, and several people are wanting that one.
