So, my FLGS is getting ready for killteam. Having some conversion how-to's, painting competition and finally a tournament. In preparation I want to make a small force that's been heavily converted, something I usually wouldn't play with too. I have a box of kroot which could easily be count as cultist troops. I also wanted to make a team of fallen Dark Angels based off these pictures:

Spoiler:

And of course I was just going to use the Dark Angel veteran box. But, wouldn't you know it, the next day they're completely sold out and the warehouse is empty.

Great. On to plan B.

I bought a box of Primaris marines and will be sculpting robes for them. Never worked with green stuff before. Learning a new skill by jumping straight into the deep end.

I finished sculpting the upper part of the robes.

It's... it's not great. But it's not horrible so I'll work with it.

I've finished the basic shape of the robes. I'll add extra details using some greenstuff.

Three out of four fallen are pretty much done. The last one has the sword and cool pose, so he's going to take some readjusting.

the last marine is finished. Sorry if the photo is a a bit blurry.

Now I have six days to finish the Kroot mercenaries and paint everything.

Damn.

My killteam is built. Now I just have to paint the entire thing in three days. This is going to suck.

For your first attempt at greenstuff I think you have done well. I have a few tips

1. Invest in some clayshapers, it will help no end

2. Mix Greenstuff 50/50 with Magicsculpt, it creates a far better material to work with, it can also be sanded, and carved once dry with no problems. This could have probably really helped you with the runes covered fallen

Keep up the good work

I give these a tentative 'done'. There's more I want to do, but I need to finish the kroot.

These turned out better than I was expecting! Paint pulled the rough GS robes together, nice work

I got second place!

So I managed to finish everyone just in time. I ended staying up till 4 in the mornings trying to get everything done. I didn't quite reach the paintjob I wanted, so I'll be adding some more details later. I wanted to add some freckles and face paint to the kroot and maybe change the colour of their frills. The marines need an extra layer of dry-brushing and washing, just to experiment with some weathering and I want to add some rust stains and scraped paint to some areas.

I have recently realized that I have been cheating at my killteam games. I cannot take both a melta and a plasma gun in my killteam. So I'm making another fallen marine armed with a plasma pistol and a chainsword. I'm basing him on this image.

Now, I couldn't tell what was happening on the back. So I decided a cloak of skulls would look pretty cool.

I'll tell you now, making that cloak was quite tedious.

All of this looks great! Especially for a first GS attempt. From what I've tried, and looking at other peoples' GS cloaks, it seems layers make it much easier, to build up the cloth, but seeing as you had a time crunch I think you did great!

Finished painting. Skull cloak looks amazing with a paintjob. I added some rust stains as I experiment with aging the armor.

The rust on the armour looks pretty good but try to think were rust would build up, less on the open spaces and more in the cracks. Don't be afraid to drop some oranges or reds into the rust as well.

Skull cloak does look well.

Love the ideas and passion you’ve got for this project!

I’d argue the rust in some of the high points actually makes more sense for surface rust. It’s where the paint is more likely to be scrapped off exposing the metal. That said a bit of bare metal in the rust would improve it.

So the new commanders rules are out and one option is the sorcerer. Which means I get to make this guy:

And once again I found myself learning new skills and a level I was not prepared for. Sculpting chains is not easy, especially at such a small scale. Never the less, it was fun to try something new.

Reminds of the tormented souls from 'A Christmas Carol'.

My new commander is mostly done. Well enough for the tabletop. The cloak is a little plain, I'm thinking some sort of silver patterning or iconography. I also need to weather the armor a bit more.

That is very awesome. I would suggest you make the eyepiece a light-blue colour to make up for the absence of glowy blue hands.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

The hands were supposed to be glowing as well, but I think I put the black on a little too heavy. Maybe I'll go back and repaint them.

So the campaign at my FLGS is bumping the max point value for vanilla missions to 150 points. That way team sizes aren't hampered as the winning teams go up in levels. Unfortunately I don't have 150 points without adding my commander. So I'm going to make a few more marines and some kroot.
