Howdy all,

So happy day, my wonderful wife (spouse points +1) said okey dokey to me attending another ITC event... oh, and hey! I bought some new shiny models to buff up and "patch" my list to feel more deadly. If you follow my reports by now you have come to suspect a certain amount of nurgliness; demons or death guard for days.

I have always loved Tzeentch, as far as as 5th when I ran Fatecrusher all day long. This tourney was good motivation to finally jump into the boat of 1k sons for all their psychic goodness, as I have always been a fan of tossing magic bolts everywhere. I have also patched a huge hole in my list, adding a couple Helverins to give me that ranged "oomph" I really needed after seeing how much my list struggled against pure gunlines (I'm sure more Plaguebearers would have done the same thing.... but helverins look cooler).

That said, my final list after lots of huffing and puffing:

Spoiler:

Game 1 vs. Eldarwing
Spoiler:

Game 1 saw me facing Caydence, little brother to our resident tourney-champ and TO Alex. He was borrowing some of his brothers eldar models, and piloting them for the first time over his normal Deathwatch army. His list was as follows:

Caydence Eldar List
Ulthwe Battalion
Autarch Skyrunner w/ resurrection artifact
Eldrad
Spiritseer
2x 20 Guardians
Rangers
10x Shadowspectres
2x 5 Dark Reapers w/ launchers
Wave Serpent

Ulthwe Air Wing
3x Crimson Hunters w/ bright lances

We played ITC mission 6 and rolled the V-shaped deployment (always forget deployment names...). Caydence won first and I failed to seize. Caydence took Ground Control, Old School, and Headhunter, I took Old School, Marked for Death (Marked all 3 fliers and one Reaper unit), and Ground Control. Caydence left all guardians in reserve.

Deployment Pictures

The game started pretty well for caydence, his whole army moved up and unloaded on me, knocking out one PBC early. However, good saves left me relatively unscathed. This allowed for me to quickly capitalize and kill off his Skyrunner (who resurrected) and one flier, while his reapers made a TON of saves against my armigers. He also lost his scouts who were camping on my right when my PBC was able to get close to him. The second turn saw him redeploy everything to one side, killing a second PBC which I purposely exploded, killing a second flier and his HQ, which caused more mortal wounds when his flier also blew up. Turn two I was able to catapult my axe prince with Warptime across the table, killing all but one reaper which was in his marked unit. Turn 3 caydence dropped all his guardians behind me in a bold play to kill ahriman and my HQ prince, as well as my cultists holding an objective. Some good saves saw Ahriman stick at one wound and my prince weathered the storm taking minor cuts.

Turn 4 saw Ahriman perils and kill himself, and I was able to take out a lot of guardians, eldrad, and his spiritseer. I slowly ground caydence down, leaving around 15 guardians and a waveserpent on one wound (FYI it survived 7 hits from demon princes with that one wound... epic saves!)

The game ended with me scoring 30 and Caydence scoring 20.

Match Afterthoughts
Caydence was a wonderful opponent and I was glad to have faced him! His list was built to be fast, and that 6+ FNP did help in many instances. However, his list relied on the fliers living to take care of heavy targets, and Death Guard flamers love things that rely on this tactic. The Blightspawn were key this round, claiming all three fliers with the help of the PBC's. My demon princes also put in a lot of work, especially the axe prince with warptime; he killed Caydences HQ, then slayed 9/10 reapers, and tanked both Eldrad and the Spiritseer, killing the seer and putting eldrad at 1 wound before dying. Caydences waveserpent withstood helacious punishment, and his guardian bomb was a neat trick hitting on 2's with that strat. If my dice weren't good he would have claimed Ahriman earlier.

This was a great start to my tourney, and Caydence ended up in 4th after defeating Orks in round 2, and Deathwatch in round 3.

Game 2 vs. Sisters and Grey Knights - Dreadknight spam!
Spoiler:

Game 2 saw me pitted against Mike Riddick, AKA Riddick, a local player and somewhat of a legend. He has been playing since the dawn of time, and has pretty well every army you could name, and paints commissions by the handful. Generally he brings along his Khorne Demons, but today he wanted something... easier... to carry and play. So be brought along a pretty awesome list that is definitely unique and something I haven't seen in 8th yet!

Riddicks List
Sisters of Battle Battalion
Celestine
Cannoness
5 units of 5 sisters
3x Exorcist's

Grey Knights Spearhead
Grandmaster Dreadknight w/ sword and psilencer
Grandmaster Dreadknight w/ sword and psilencer
3x Dreadknights with Psilencers and the str 14 CCW's

Sorry I'm not 100% on his relic or warlord choices, I know the cannoness was his warlord. We played ITC mission 3, Nexus Control. Riddick took Big Game Hunter, Headhunter, and Behind Enemy Lines, while I took BGH, Old School, and Kingslayer. Deployment was the one where its 24" from either short table edge. I won first turn and Riddick failed to seize. All 5 dreads were in DS reserves.

Pictures of Deployment

Turn 1 started pretty decent for me, putting 8 wounds on one exorcist and 6 into another. I also plinked a couple sisters.

Turn 1 showed me why Celestine was such a powerhouse, as she mosied behind my front line, and aimed herself toward Ahriman. Shooting proved pretty ineffective, most of his stuff focused on the PBC's which giggled at his shots from the Exorcists. Celestine charged ahriman after shooting him, but luck was on my side and he took only a few wounds. Turn 2 saw me wax celestine and two exorcists, as well as one unit of sisters.

At this point he dropped a wall of Dreadknights behind me... it was pretty damn imposing. I mean, look at this:

However, then Riddick revealed why GK's are pretty underwhelming; damage 1 smites and Psilencers having no AP without spending CP. He unloaded a bazzilion psilencer shots, resulting in my HQ demon prince taking 4 wounds, he killed on PBC, and that was it. Celestine made another assassination run on Ahriman killing him, while Typhus tanked a Dreadknight charge, taking him to half. Turn 3 saw me start killing all the remaining sisters squads, killing 1 GK grandmaster, and finishing two dreadknights. Turn 4 I was able to clear all but his exorcist and last dreadknight, tabling him turn 5.

Final score was me 34 and Riddick 15.

End State picture

Pictures of the game:

Post Game Thoughts
Riddick was a fantastic opponent and we had a lot of laughs, and sisters have some damn cool tricks; it just sucks they're over priced and have no codex support. The way they did acts of faith is pretty cool, and celestine can be extremely powerful. I was just lucky I had a ton of mind bullets to throw around, and the blightspawns in back to clear away anything that got too touchy. Riddick did the best he could, but the PBC's were hard from him to crack with exorcists especially because of the varying shot count.

Typhus was a beast this game, tanking two Dreadknights before going down, allowing the demon princes to run around clear and free killing indiscriminately. The axe prince this game once again impressed me, using Warptime to run around and axe murderlate whatever he wanted. This game also allowed me to use the PBC's as overwatch battering rams, I would send them in as my first charge before my heavy hitters, allowing them to absorb overwatches. Pretty nifty trick! The Helverins showed up this game more than game one, chunking dreadknights to allow for my other stuff to clean up easier. Great game, and I look forward to my rematch with Riddick in the future!

Game 3 vs. Knight Castellan, IG Battalion, and BA Battalion w/ Smash Captains
Spoiler:

Three players are left with 2 wins outta 12 players, and I end up at the top table against the one list I was unsure of how I would fare: Knights with all the OP stuff. Matt is a local tourney normal, and hes testing his list for some of the bigger tourneys either this year or next. Of course, he has some of the best units compiled into a list, and its a scary one:

Matts Knights, IG, BA list
House Raven Super Heavy Det
Castellan w/ 4x missiles, Cawls Wrath, Ion bulwark trait
2x Armiger Warglaives

Cadian IG Battalion
Commander w/ all the normal CP stuff
Commander
3x 10 troops w/ mortar
3x Hellhounds (in a unit I guess? he deployed them across the field)
1 unit of mortars

Blood Angel Battalion
3x Smash Captains, one with the relic to always fight first
3x 5 Scouts

We played ITC mission 2 and rolled the corners deployment. Matt put his castellan in outflank, and two captains in reserve, deploying everything else. He had 16 (REALLY?!) CP to start, and after spending and doing all his "roll to get stuff back" he started the game with 12 CP. They really ought to nerf this... I deployed pretty centrally with the armigers in the far back. I took first, and matt failed to seize.

Pictures of Deployment

Turn one was a good one for me. I was able to drop mortars all over the place and actually hit thanks to my demon prince, killing his heavy mortars in the back, and doing a bunch of wounds to two hellhounds, one armiger is put to 3 wounds, and killing a scouts squad. Matts castellan comes on, and he charges my lines with his armigers; getting into CC with one PBC. I'm able to kill his armiger, and he kills my PBC, and he uses CP to force his armiger to blow up, which kills my PBC, which blows up and does a bunch of wounds to many of my HQ's. He misses his first shieldbreaker even with a reroll, and charges one slam captain into one DP and typhus. He rolls well, putting typhus at 2, and doing 3 wounds to my DP, and I fail to kill his captain. He used like 6 CP this turn between strats and rerolls, and ends up only losing 2 CP tanks to the IG shenanigans...

My turn 2 I kill his second armiger, slam captain, a unit of scouts, and one hellhound, plus putting down a bunch of guardsdudes. His turn 2 he drops his other two slamcaptains, and thanks to walls, I can't overwatch one with my armiger, while the other whiffs overwatch. He fails one charge and makes the second, killing an armiger. He also puts a ton of wounds on one PBC, and barely hurts a second, and kills typhus with a shieldbreaker missile (rolled 6 wounds) and a bunch of zombies.

Turn 3 I feel confident, killing both his slam captains, and starting to whittle down everything else. His remaining hellhounds are low, and hes running low on troops. However, he fights after death with one slamcaptain, which sucks... he knocks one DP to 3 wounds. FYI hes been using CP like crazy, and hes still at 6 CP.... really annoying. His turn 3 he knocks one PBC to 2 wounds, and kills a second, which explodes killing my other PBC, and wounding all my HQ's again (I had already rerolled a save, so couldn't reroll the explosion). The result was Ahriman was at 1 wound now, and my other HQ's are low. He shieldbreakers and kills my axe DP rolling 6 wounds again....

Turn 4 I'm starting to fall apart; that explosion hurt. I'm able to clean up a unit of guardsmen and leave his last hellhound at a couple wounds. He spends a bazillion CP again, killing ahriman with a shieldbreaker, and killing the rest of my poxwalkers. Hes still at 3 or 4 CP...

Turn 5 I'm pretty much spent; I have two spawns, one prince, an armiger, left. I'm able to kill his last hellhound, and mostly hide. Its now clean up for him, he uses a bunch of CP for stuff, killing my last armiger and one blgihtspawn, while holding two obj. Turn 6 I secure one more kill and score an objective, but I can't hide my demon prince enough to avoid his castellan seeing me, and I get tabled turn 6.

Final score is me 24 and Matt 30.

End State Picture

Pictures of the game:

Post game thoughts
I may sound salty while writing this one, and its nothing against Matt; he was a fantastic opponent and definitely played a stellar game. But a few things this game made me pretty angry:
1) House Raven strat allowing you to reroll number of shots of 1, plus all wounds and hits of 1 was pretty.... crazy. Especially when you combine it with point two.
2) The IG CP trick is a little stupid; when you not only refund, but GAIN CP for using strategems, how is this fair? I was tracking and Matt was using up to 6 CP a turn in the beginning, and was getting a NET GAIN of CP. This mean't Matt could use any CP's he wanted unabated, which mean't he could use whatever he wanted when he wanted. This allowed him to snipe characters AND use the raven strat each turn... 6 turns of raven strat.... ugh.
3) Slam Captains, while expendable, put most stuff to shame with their damage; this is my first time facing three.
4) Shieldbreaker missiles ignoring LOS is pretty crazy...

That said, it was a great game, and I learned a lot. Matt was cordial and we both played our best, and really, despite all the craziness his list had the turning point was when my PBC exploded killing my other PBC and putting my remaining HQ's super low on wounds. Matts list ran like a well oiled machine, and I had zero ways of getting to his warlord in the back. Plus his list played around many ITC missions; slam captains could not be chosen for mark for death, nor could his hellhounds, or most of his list besides the armigers. I was really pigeonholed with my options for secondaries, which hurt.

However, I feel like I played his game well, using my list to prevent his castellan from having any really good options for shooting. PBC's once again proved to be bulwarks, soaking up tons of damage and killing backfield units. I was actually keeping pace with him on points until turn 4, when it basically snowballed downhill. Fantastic game, and I look forward to a future rematch!

Tournament Results, Afterthoughts, and Unit Rankings
Spoiler:

When the results were in, I ended up taking second out of 12; not bad! The other undefeated list ended up losing his third game, resulting in only one undefeated list and many with 2 wins and 1 loss.

I faced three completely different lists, piloted by experienced players, and learned a ton throughout the day. I also had a lot of laughs, and I'm not discouraged by my top table loss for the second time; I'm actually extremely happy with how well I did against Knights. I want to thank Hobby Chest in Jacksonville NC once again for hosting us, and Alex Ramsey for putting it together and TOing.

My list for this tourney had quite a few firsts; running poxwalkers in a tournament setting, using 1k sons, and using armigers. So I made several mistakes with them, and I'm sure I can do better next time. As always, let me give a breakdown of each unit, and how I feel they performed throughout the tourney:

Demon Prince of Nurgle w/ Plate, Arch Contaminator, wings - B - This tourney I tried this combo again with PBC's and spawns and it worked way better this time by keeping the prince near the PBC's as long as possible, before running off to kill stuff. I also forgot he had the plate every... single.... game.... lol. Worked really well, but I never used his spell, instead smiting all the time.
Typhus - B - Typhus combined with the poxwalkers was a force to be reckoned with; game 3 they put up such resistance that Matt was forced to shieldbreaker typhus over easier targets. Had the slam captain not already punched him, he may have lived til the end. He also dominated some dreadknights. I feel buffs are the way to go with him, vitality and miasma are definitely my go-to's on him. Not to mention he can reroll his scythe with the prince nearby!
Poxwalkers - B - Poxwalkers actually impressed me, and seemed to work really well with this list. They provided the needed bodies to tank for my backfield, and gave opponents fits. Game 3 it even forced matt to shoot his castellans weapons into a squad, lol! I never got to use cloud of flies, which I should have game 3.
Cultists - ??? - 10 cultists... they held objectives haha.
Foul Blightspawns - B+ - They did what I took them for, killing elites and tanks, and fliers with -hit modifiers. Fantastic unit, and I always want at least one.
Plagueburst Crawler - A+ - These were extremely impressive once again; even on average dice, they withstand so much punishment its insane. I also learned the beauty of sending these in to ram things before charging in squishier targets.
Armiger Helverins - C- - So many people love these guys, and they definitely filled a niche in my list; but the -1 AP is a huge problem. Game 1 it allowed reapers in cover to take two turns of shooting from these, only losing 1 model. Game 2 they plinked a few wounds off some exorcists and knights, while game 3 I don't think they "killed" anything. I'm really undecided on these, and almost feel like a couple DG Contemptors may be better overall; more reliable shot output, not to mention rerolls from princes or lords nearby. However, they did not impress me in any one game, but they weren't awful.
Ahriman - C - He killed himself in one game, and died without doing much the other two. His +1 to deny I can see being pivotal in some games, and he was able to get his powers off all the time. I think I want more games with him.
Demon Prince of Tzeentch w/ Axe, Warptime, wings - A+ - This guy... so damn good. I get why people say the claw is better (because of no -1 to hit), but this guys damage output is far more consistent being str +2 and AP -3 instead of -2 at 3 damage each. Plus with warptime he was getting where he needed and chopping up stuff. He really impressed me, especially once buffed with -1 to hit and +1 invun and Diabolic strength for Str 11 on 5 attacks! I missed having FNP though...
Demon Prince of Tzeentch w/ claws, helm, wings - C+ - His damage wasn't as good as his axe brother, but he did well as a buffer and smiter. The helm was awesome, giving me a few more CP to play with, especially game 3 with all his strats he was popping. Definitely worth the 1 CP! I missed having FNP though.

Thanks for reading and C&C always welcome!

Well he did table a mono custodes biker list round 1, and beat a mono knights list round 3. Even with his handicap he is a great player!

Yeah, its a rough list to play against, especially because it can do whatever it wants each turn. Im glad i made a game of it though, and i do expect at least some of the tricks of this list to get beat with a stick in either ca or the big faq

Good catch, I did have diabolic strength on him almost everytime, probably got confused. That said, test it out; my issue is that often my opponent gets more than a few hits through on overwatch, and most Castellan guns will kill a Khorne DP on decent rolls unless you spend CP to give him a 4++. Volcano cannon, for example, just needs to hit twice on average to kill you. Plus any savy opponent will keep the knight far enough way that it will take more than one Warptime to get that prince close enough, and until then they'll snipe him with mortal missiles (kinda like how I lost my axe prince). I just think the skullreaver option, while a good one, against opponents who know what a threat it is its not the best option. Nurgle DP's with Corruption can do far more damage against a wide variety of targets, and have FnP to prevent the random sniping that the others suffer from. Plus if your doing that means, likely, you may not have Warptime (unless you do Ahriman, DP, Terminator sorc)

There's a reason why so many people, even the good tournament players, are playing the IK/BA/AM types of lists. They're easy to play and Knights have so many good stratagems, which they can use over and over again thanks to AM shenanigans.

Keep up the good work!

Jimmy! Welcome back buddy, shot you a PM! Hope you start posting reps again, it gets lonely being one of the few who do written reps :(

Yes, it is easy, and they have options for everything and no real way to stop them cold. I really hope they put a plug on the AM battery, Nova is proof that Knights are just so powerful, especially with supporting elements from basically any imperial codex they want that day.

Thanks! Maybe one day I'll start writing here again on dakka (when I'm not so busy with work).

I played against IK/AM/BA recently at a local tournament, was totally unprepared as to what they can do since I've been out of the 40K scene for a while, and then proceeded to get rolf-stomped by them. Lol. Now I know better about their shenanigans.

Actually, I've been so out of 40K that I haven't even played against the new Chaos stuff yet!

if you dont play a list tailored against them and your opponent is bit competetent is not a lot you can do, that list is wrong, tons of Cp's slam captain buffed with stratagems delivering tons of attacks, castellan a powerhouse, if they will put an end to cp's farm that list could disappear or at least become beatable.

Castellans and Slam captains are still strong models, but yes, the CP farm makes it super hard to deal with; not because it makes them harder to kill, it just allows them to push out so much damage a turn its insane. Blood angels captains fighting after death, castellans rerolling 1's all game, its crazy.

My next rep looks like it might be against Eldar. I'll try and attempt to cobble together a mortarian list I've been thinking about but we shall see
