Had a game the other day against a Chaos soup.

His list (approximately):
Spoiler:
Mortarion

2 Poxbringers
1 DP of Nurgle
3x29 Plaguebearers

Ahriman
2 DP of Tzeentch

I was running:
Spoiler:
2 Dawncaptains
3x3 Custodian Guard
1 Vexilla
6 Jetbikes

2 Company Commanders (Grand Strategist and Aquila)
3 Infantry Squads
3 Scout Sentinels
2x3 Mortars
1 Wyvern

His tactic was to catapult Mortarior forward and use his CP to do the 7" explosion as often as possible, do some damage in melee and then die and try and to explode on a 4+ as well. Meanwhile, 1-2 units of PB block the rest of the Psykers, one unit of PB goes into reserve. In short, a lot of MW and, between the natural resilience of the PB and their -1 to hit, a hard wall between myself and his magic.

How would I go about countering that? The early Morty rush took me by surprise and his deleted my IG fairly quickly, opening me up to smites and all the Tzeetch MW powers. I also struggled getting through the PB wall. It took me two turns to get two units down to a manageable size (one unit got tarpitted by 3 CG). However, he already did the damage. I did alright in terms of scoring, but he eventually outlasted me by focusing everything on the Bikes.

Any ideas?

Honestly? More chaff. it sounds boring, but you wanna try to bring enough chaff to survive against Mortarian's attacks, cockblocking most of his smiting.

I was hoping to move away from IG, especially with the inevitable CP farming nerf coming up

In this case, I would need to resort to a Valhalla Battalion with Conscripts and Pietrov's AK47.

Having said that, is it really smart to overly forge against one singular list type when there's Eldar, Tau and Nids to worry about?

Edit: A chaff wall will not stop targeted powers like doombolt, Bolt of Change and Infernal Gaze. Or Treason of Tzeentch for that matter.

True, but smite is the most reliably spooky power. If they're just spamming, smite will come up most often.

And trust me, chaff is good against most lists. If not for body blocking, than objective taking as well.

Another thing to note is that Mort can only kill what's directly up against his booty. If you position a bunch of smaller squads so that he can only get at 1 or 2 of them, you can still have a screen after all is said and done.

I once beat an Ork army by civil war style lining all my cultists in rows of seperate units, stopping him from outright killing my screen in one go of assault.

Yes, this is useful. I remember bunching up a bit, because I was unfamiliar with this strategy. In hindsight, I could've mitigated a lot of damage if I deployed wider and only sacrificed one IS. Though my bikes had Death Hex on them, I should've probably did Stooping Dive to damage Morty, take a bit of a beating, then retreat and shoot him to death in my turn to avoid 3 explosions. I was afraid of the damage because of Death Hex and charged him in my turn, resulting in my guys being out of position, ready to smited, and took three of the aforementioned booms...

Mega squad of bikes that deepstrike in. Prevents them from taking any damage from the morty bomb and then they can easily clean him up, be positioned to prevent smiting, and get to the enemy’s lines the next turn, with some attrition. Them and the two to three shield captains should roll up what you described his back line as.

You will suffer at least one Morty aura even if you charged him.

The answer, in my experience, is Hurricane Bolters and auto-cannon-esque weapons.

Generally I think you just have to spread out your good stuff and block with chaff as much as you can, then burn him down the next turn all at once.
