‘A gamer opened fire after losing...’

Because normal people go to a computer game event with a gun. He went with the intention of doing this.

I wonder if he had some kind of grudge or something with one of the streamers...

From the audio, it sounds like he was using a pistol.

Not necessarily. It's similar with suicides in the USA. Having a gun at home makes the numbers rise because when people get depressed/suicidal and they have a gun nearby they also tend to be more "successful". Most of them didn't buy the gun to commit suicide, it just happened to be a convenient tool for the job at the moment.

It's the same with all the accidental gun deaths and injuries. Every one of those people thought they knew how to handle a gun and that it could never ever happen to them or in their household. The problem is even if you are really careful, accidents sometimes still happen. I can fully believe that this person had a gun out of habit and then—out of rage (or whatever)—ended up shooting people because they felt like doing it.

Of course it could be intentional but I would guess with such a low number of deaths (a few hours ago I read that four dead) it's either badly planned or not planned at all.

False. There is no such thing as an 'accident' with a firearm. All such 'accidents' are negligence, and if weapons are properly handled, stored, maintained, and used- there will be no 'accidents'.

The article I read didn't say if the shooter had the gun with him the whole time or if he went to his car/hotel/whatever and got the gun after losing the tournament. Either way, event organizers in Florida need to start taking security seriously.

I saw the video. It wasn't pretty.

So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

We have a fair number of CCW's in our miniatures, cards and role playing gaming community in Jax. Never heard of the place or the even it took place, as far as I know it's not that kind of game store. Most of the Table top people know each other, it's a fairly close community.

Agreed. Seeing the flash of the red dot over the man's chest before the shots was chilling.

I saw this on Twitter, and whilst my experience of Twitter seems abnormally better than most Dakka users', some of the comments being made were appalling. Remarks made such as "shall I send thoughts and prayers for $5.99" and other "jokes" at EA's expense about their policies are completely inappropriate here.

A lot of places where I've lived have stopped hosting Madden tournaments and events. They were just synonymous with trash-talk escalating to profanity-laced threats, which escalated to outright violence. Mostly fist-fights and shoving, but even at recreation centers if you saw "Madden 20XX Tournament" we would joke about how long it would take before the cops had to show up and how many police cruisers it'd take.

So as harsh as it sounds- a shooting at one of these tournaments isn't very shocking to me. It's still sad, no one that died or got injured or was there deserved it, but I can't say this is something I can't imagine. In fact, it's one of those things I'm shocked took this long to happen.

Because, you know, in America guns are everywhere and it must be the responsability of event organizers to prevent themselves and their participants from the madness of some gun owners.

Be serious. It's not reasonable as a reaction.

I noticed you changed your statement, so I changed mine.

It's not stupid to have security at an event, regardless of how you feel.

I shouldn't be held responsible for thieves, but I lock my doors and don't leave valuables out in the open. Precaution isn't victim blaming, it's understanding risks and taking appropriate countermeasures.

In time of peace, you should never need security specifically to prevent your event from being the scene of some gun owner going crazy and shoot at random people. Period.

This is a problem specific to America. Video games events elsewhere don't need that, but in America they should ? Bonkers, I say.

And if you want to live in fear of criminals, that's you having a problem, not the innocents out there.

"Should"

After many years, I have learned that word means nothing.

IS. What IS is what's important. I "Should" never have to lock my front door, but I do because the way it IS tells me there are thieves out there. It's reality, and no amount of screaming about the way things SHOULD be is going to make that change. It is the way of things, and my personal feelings on how society SHOULD be aren't going to impact the way I take measures to protect myself and my property.

A nice fantasy, but unfortunately not one that reflects reality.

We aren't having to dump out water bottles because of acid attacks and hand over pocketknives, either. So I'd say we have our own problems, and other countries have theirs.

"Fear" is not what it is. It's basic understanding of reality. It's not 'fear', it's taking precautions. It's very simple. It's one of the most basic components of being an adult.

And it's hardly a "problem" to take precautions, it requires just a bit of being practical and responsible. I'm not stringing up tripwires and training junkyard dogs here.

He likely planed this.

I don't doubt that. I don't know any of the Twitch gamers, I don't keep up with that kind of gaming- but I know that a lot of aspiring pro gamers have grudges and things that can escalate and there's no telling what went down. Guess we'll have to wait for the investigation to conclude.

While you at expect that at major events, if the new normal is patting down everyone at every public gathering to make sure there isn't someone planning a mass shooting... then we're really moved the overton window onto how much we accept these kinds of events, which again don't really occur anywhere else.

I mean, we totally have accepted them, but it's another sad little milestone into just how entrenched it's becoming.

It most certainly is but after the shooting of Christina Grimmie and the massacre at that night club, you'd think event organizers would at least begin using metal detectors and screening people's bags.

I was over at AX in LA this year, and it was bag checks and metal detectors at every entrance. Same for AnimeNYC. Hell even dinky little Youmacon in Detroit had bag checks.
