I have bought more than my fair share of Space Marines over the past few years of past few years since I started hobbying/playing 40K. Some of those Space Marines were bought and painted specifically for formations in 7th edition. As we all know, in 8th, there are no formations. So, those space marines are essentially going to waste sitting in a plastic organizing/tackle on my closet shelf. I was able to find about 8 legs that I could use for Tac marines when going through my bits and plenty of backs, chests, arms, weapons, etc. My wife was awesome in letting me buy some Sniper scouts and a box of three Easy To Build Primaris Reivers. So, I now have enough models and variation in models to put together a Space Marine Kill Team. I wanted to use one of the chapters that already have transfers that come on Space Marine transfer sheets, and I ended up picking Raven Guard and want to run a FLGS semi-competitive army (win a few, lose a few, just have fun).

I've done some reading on their fluff. Seems they depend heavily on their scouts to find the best places for deep strike-style insertions (Drop Pods, Reivers, Assault Marines, etc.). That said, as I don't know all o the fluff, are there certain vehicles or units that the Raven Guard prefer not to use? Like, I know the Hawk Lords, for example, don't like using Drop Pods because they are so confident in their flying skills that they'd rather use troop transport aircraft for insertions instead. If I'm not mistaken, the White Scars prefer not to use Dreadnoughts, etc.

If you can help me out, I'd appreciate it.

tl;dr - Have plenty of space marines that I need to repurpose after 7th edition and want to make a fluffy Raven Guard army but one that could still win a few games at my FLGS. More of their fluff and unit recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

GS

They tend to like their infantry assaults, heavy armour like Landraiders and Repulsors are generally only used when there isn't another option. Their Rhino chassis vehicles are configured for stealth (reduced noise and heat radiation, etc.) so no need to shy away from them if you're going for that fluffy outlook.

Scouts are a great choice as they do indeed see a lot of work, well, scouting. Not sure how they work with their First Company but I'd imagine teleporting in Terminators to be something they'd do frequently. Centurion suits are maybe a touch conspicuous for their liking, looking at the model but I've not read anything official about it.

Basically from what I've picked up you'll have scouts probably already on location (infiltrate them), any Assault Marines, Drop Pod units, Terminators, or any air support forms a vanguard leading the charge, and really whatever you want can follow.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!

When I think Raven Guard I think fast-attack, jump-pack/assault infantry and stealth/recon, etc. So for fluffy I'd be going; assault marines, scouts, bikes, landspeeders. I have no idea what a competitive list would look like, though.

Homebrew Imperial Guard: 1222nd Etrurian Lancers (Winged); Special Air-Assault Brigade (SAAB)
Homebrew Chaos: The Black Suns; A Medrengard Militia (think Iron Warriors-centric Blood Pact/Sons of Sek)

My girlfriend is starting her first army and she's decided on Raven Guard, so I've been helping her find fluffy units for them. From what we've found, you're going to want lots of sneaky guys, such as Reivers and Scouts, but also the fast options, like Assault Marines and Vanguard Veterans.
However, they are still Codex complaint, so they'll make plenty use of Tactical and Intercessor squads too.
