Yeah they looked dated even when they were current, but there's something about the sheer unapologetic brutality of the models I quite like. The lot will never rank up unless you number the bases--truly, chaos in inherent in their swaggering pose! Anyway I just picked some up on eBay and I have no idea which edition of Warhammer I'd want to play with them. 4/5/6th? 8th? Maybe Kings of War?

Soon, with fresh reassembly and coloration in the realm of the gods, Morbus Pilate shall return to the Old World to marshall the forces of the Iron Pillar across many realities for the glory of Chaos!

Those things would have been great for Age of Sigmar where ranking wouldn't be an issue. I built three blocks at 20 man each that had Hand weapon/Shield, Halberd/Shield, and Great Weapon/Shield, and there were times I had to walk away trying to get them to rank up. Selling them all was the most vindicating thing I've ever done.

Looking for dice from the new AOS boxed set and Dark Imperium on the cheap. Let me know if you can help.

Haha I recently picked up a bunch of these for pure nostalgia (and the knights from the same time). No idea whether I'll be using them in AoS or an Oldhammer army yet though.

Any edition will do. Warriors of Chaos have their place in all of them.

Crush the enemy, for we are blessed by the gods.

I think nostalgia was a large factor in this impulse purchase. Indeed, they were from more than half a lifetime ago for me and bring memories of trekking through the woods in the summer with my buddy to go to the corner store for some pop, Ravening Hordes and Portent.net.

These lads will definitely be an Oldhammer force for me, as they are utterly incompatible with my very current Disciples of Tzeentch.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I didnt play chaos at the time. I had a baggie with one or two plus a selection of bitz from ebay. I used some pieces to convert up a mounted sorcerer. The hunched form worked. Not much use for the rest of the parts though. I experimented a bit but found them too chunky to be compatible. I am fortunate that I did not buy more.

At first I lamented the lack of posability if the newer warriors, but now I like them, and like their calm ordered inexorable advance. Now I would still take them even if we had new multipose chaos warriors.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Nah, I hated them in the 90's and I still dislike them.

Honeslty, as I am buying up all this 6th edition stuff, I am realizing why I disliked WFB so much, and its the old cheesy models. Especially the plastic rank and file. But even as I am looking character models, I am appalled at even many of the old character ones.

6th seems to be the turning point, where the art and atmosphere gets more realistic and dark, and I am loving that. Pre-6th looks like a cartoon. And the same can be said of 40k 2nd edition, but for some reason I am not as bothered about that.

This is broadly true, and is certainly true of chaos models. However it is not universally true.

Older Bretonnians looked less surreal rather than more, as the 6th army book devolved into the nobles vs peasants aesthetic magnified into a caricature. Some still prefer to source 5th edition core set Bretonnian knights than those for 6th edition, I have a mix of both and can see why.
Older Wood elf models also look 'realistic'/Tolkienian than later models. Until you get way back with the very old and mediocre sculpts while GW was still cutting its teeth in miniatures design.

Finally there were a large number of no nonsense simple plastic with good crisp and simple detail, especially for Empire made from Citiadel miniatures made for third party companies or products, such as Mighty Empires, Advanced Heroquest and Talisman. You can make an army out of those, and many did, including myself. I had a fully plastic Empire army back in the early 90's when plastics were restricted to a handful of monopose sculpts.

There was a surge in modest scukpts around 6th edition which was later made more complex simply because Gw could. 6th edition early multipose plastics, such as those initially made for Mordheim, the 6th Core box and the Empire state troops box are in my opinion far superior to the overdetailed plastics that came later. I am not alone on this early mutlipost Empire state troops are worth more on ebay than the 8th edition sculpts of the same models.
It was not all downhill of course, the replacement pistoliers, steam tank and greatswords are well received, and many wanted the empire knights to be redone.

For chaos, yes but as modern as possible. Please note that a lot of characters came out very similar to the structure an aesthetic of current chaos warriors while sculpted during the time of the old hunchback kits. Including and not limited to Vardek Crom, Archaon mounted and on foot, and the 2009 limited edition Games Day warrior. GW knew which way they wanted to head long before they actually got there.

Agreed. These fellas stopped me from collecting Chaos until the guys with the upright posture were released.

Marauder armies were the thing then anyway.
