So ive already got sizeable Gondor and Rohan armies but im looking into Iron dwarves and i really dont know what is standard to play for them. Ive never played the game before, only collected but want to start soon

Are goats useful, how many infantry is normal, which are the competitve heroes? Any help would be great, thanks.

Iron Hill have become my main army... There are a few rules to getting the most out of them...

1. Take Dain. Every game. Don't think about it. Do it. :-p Dain on Boar is just unbelievably good.

2. At 750pts, you want at least 20 Iron-Hills Warriors. They're the core/heart of your army.

3. Goats are kind of a trap. They're fun, and solid, but soooo over-priced. I take, at most, three, to be a flanking force, objective grabbers, or spotters for....

4. The Ballista is surprisingly strong. On paper it just seems ok, but played well it is very disruptive, and forces your opponent to make poor choices. Plus it'll probably get a points reduction in the next Hobbit army-book.

5. Mattocks are trash. Just don't bother, ever. :-p

Thanks for the reply! That help's out a lot! What is the general opinion of crossbowmen?

I like them in limited numbers. I often run six, because its too many to ignore, but not so many that you're beholding to them. Plus, since they've got shields, they can contribute to Shield-Wall, and still be able to shoot since they aren't "supporting" a combat.

What are your thoughts on the chariot?

The chariots value depends a LOT on your local meta. It is a big, and obvious target that can do tremendous damage, but an opponent with lucky Siege Weapons, can and will just make it go away.

I love the model, and its done modestly well, but Iron Hills are just such an elite army, that eventually you can't afford all the "toys" without seriously compromising your model count.

Its also crazy expensive in terms of real-life bucks. I ordered one because I LOVE SBG and eventually want to own everything for it... but it would be low on my list of purchases if I was just starting out.

Oh, and its worth noting that its deceptively hard to "drive". The rules for its movement + normal terrain makes it exceedingly difficult to find optimal lanes. That said... when everything works out just right and you roll over five models in a single movement phase, you're feeling pretty awesome. :-p

Especially since Siege Weapons are better (well, as in, they don't suck) in the new edition.

I think Siege Weapons are in an interesting place, as far as competitive/matched-play. I think they're actually very good for their points (usually), but they're just no good at about 50% of the scenarios. From a game design perspective I find that really interesting as a choice during list-building.

How does one employ the ballasta to make your opponent make those bad choices?

Its "AoE" quality means players start separating models, staggering their lines, etc... They either risk keeping things close together, or they disrupt their own buff/support auras, spear supports, etc...

Dwarves LOVE an army that attacks them piece-meal, in waves.

siege weapons make no damn sense in this game and aren't very fun to play against.

Yes, very much so, in a game I played earlier this week I fought against Minas Tirith with an Avenger, which performed better than I've ever seen one perform. Put 2 wounds on a troll and took out several orcs.

Tangential observation: I have noticed that if you happen to have more time than money there do exist plastic Grim Hammers at $35/10 from GW, which might work as Iron Hills dwarves if you could do some weapon swaps.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.
