GW Majorly screwed up by not errataing the Eldar Codex to be in line with the newer codexes.
I propose the following CWE Codex errata for all instances of the Hover Tank rule.
Hover Tank: Instead of measuring distances to and from this model’s base, measure to and from this model’s hull or base (whichever is closer).

Seems good - have you sent it to them?

You measure ALWAYS from hull. Not base.
Not sure about what game term it has though. When would you be in range to base but not to hull?
But hey GW is against standardized rules. Bespoken everywhere. 2 similar rules working differently is 8th ed style.

In theory it means that with a ridiculous base you could prevent a grav tank from ever being in melee.

While there are no hard rules preventing this, it would be considered modeling for advantage and if the owning player is not willing to make an exception to allow measuring to melee, you call them on their BS, stop playing and/or call a TO. Simple fix, no need to add yet more FAQs when common sense and civility can be applied. Although I don't see any harm in this rule being updated for the consistency. I personally have 2 grav tanks converted from FW Hornets. I put them on the oval flyer bases almost 2" off the ground to replicate the same height of a true Grav tank for LoS,, as well as extensions on the hull to give the same 'footprint'. I've never had an issue with opponents getting into melee with them, even though they are taller than 1" off the base. Because I model for aesthetics and always give my opponent the courtesy of not being TFG. -

Remember that you measure *to* the hull, but not *from* the model.
A 2" tall model atop a short base can't get within 1" of a hovertank on a 1.5"-tall base. The rule makes that more viable - if the hovertank (or similar) were too high, you could get to the base underneath it.
I'd rather an adjustment that allows you to measure "closest point", whether it's base or not, independent of flyer/hover/etc. Added benefit of making it slightly easier to get into CC with models on the 2nd floor with things like Gorkanaughts or Dreads or Wraithlords (but only in siutations where the unit is close enough to the edge).

You don't need a "ridiculous base" for Wave Serpents because the standard stick prevents anything with a base from charging it.
The CWE version of the rule states "Hover Tank: Distance and ranges are always measured to and from this model’s hull, even though it has a base."
That means if the model charging has a base, it can never get within 1", even if it's a Knight or Titan.

Or you just say ignore any vertical distance?

Seems an unnecessary change to bring it into line with how anyone with common sense plays it anyway.

Or you update the main rules to allow MODELS to measure to MODELS. Not just bases or hulls, but literally any part of the model. This not only fixes the Hover tank issue, but Knights not being able to melee units right in front of their face because their toes are too far away. -

This does seem sensible, if only for the benefit of those people who insist on playing like a melt unless the rules specifically tell them otherwise.

How is it unnecessary? By that logic why bother issuing any errata whatsoever?

But could the modei get physically within 1" of base or would eldar vehicle block it?

Measure from the shadow of the hull (basically, imagine there was no flying stand).
I guess measuring from the model might not be as wonky as it was for AoS if you can still measure from the base and if you can't move on top of your own models. That was

Depending on the lighting conditions, the shadow might be really long or really small, so I dont think this works.

He did not mean literal shade but imagine that the hull is there in the ground. Ie almost like playing without that flying base.
And yes the AOS original measuring from model was horrible. Some models could not even attack without being put over other models base. Fun moving model out without moving the other model as well and not to mention potential damage to base...Thank god even GW realized that was bad!
