Hello

Kind of new to these forums, lurked for a long while via Google links to various threads. I'm a member, but more of a lurker, over at B&C also (haven't visited in a while though), and used to be a member of Warseer before they got resurrected, I signed up again but can't post for some reason...

Anyhow, I have a large Dark Angels army, roughly 3000-5000 points depending on what version of 40k you total it up in, it is my main army, although I put it together about 20 years ago now though, so most of it is not very well done...

I also have about 500 points of Eldar, which currently sits with a buddies partial Eldar army making up about 1000-1500 points. And I have a part started Chaos Space Marines/Daemons army, probably about 1000 points again if you count the unpainted models.

I am currently looking at putting together an Astra Militarum army, as I've always wanted an Imperial Guard army but have never got around to starting one.

I'd like it to be a Steel Legion army, although I am acutely aware that Steel Legion models are hard to come by apart from the Infantry Squads currently still available on GW's website.

So far I've come up with this -

Commissar Yarrick
2 Infantry Squads - exactly as per the boxed sets, so 9 guardsmen, sergeant, missile launcher and grenade launcher.
Leman Russ - I actually already have this so don't really need to buy a new one, but I assembled and painted it about 10-15 years ago so it could probably do with being replaced, I have an airbrush now so can do a better job of it...
Heavy Weapons Team - 3 Lascannon. I'm not sure of this unit as I can't get the Steel Legion models, they're as rare as hens teeth on evilbay and extortionate!!
Basilisk
2x Valkyrie - my thinking on this is, that whilst the Steel Legion are a mechanised army and infantry units usually roll around in Chimera, I could go with an "Air Cav" type of theme and use Valkyries.

I think, that minus the HWT's the above comes to exactly 1000pts and 49 power. Could be 50 power and 999 points, I forget which. I can't seem to achieve a 1000 point army that I like with 2 infantry Squads (required for a Patrol detachment) and 2 Chimera though, hence my "Air Cav" idea. I thought about getting 3 Armoured Sentinels, but my experience of using them (I play a lot of games using proxy models) is that they tend to not be very useful and get destroyed quite quickly...

I have some questions though -

Are the 2 Valkyries too much for a 1000 point army?

Can anyone suggest a more competitive/effective army composition for 1000pts of Guard?

Thanks in advance.

Shadowsword, mortars, plasma infantry blob. Done.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

and hellhounds, but yeah this is pretty much what "competitive" guard lists look like.

That's not to say that traditional choices like Leman Russes, Artillery, Valkyries are outright bad, but you're not gonna be beating the big scary meta lists with them.

Also, don't take Lascannons in a Heavy Weapons Squads. Too expensive for a unit that will immediately get shot off the board with little effort. If you are taking lascannon teams or really any heavy weapons besides mortars, hide them in infantry squads.

Have you checked out the death korps of krieg on forgeworld?

if money isn't an issue i'd get them. they do look a tad better than steel legion, I rustled up a squad of 15 or so for shadow war but could possibly use them for kill team too
