The first of many autumnal encounter boards. I intend to have nine in the end for a skirmish board of 90 by 90. The board is magnetised, so one can place trees, standign stones, shrubs etc. and remove them easily. The profiles are home-brew laser-cut designs.

I used Rooibos tea to depict fallen leaves and soil to depict, well soil, and a few MiniNatur leaves to add more interesting shapes (oak and maple leaves).

The process of doing the groundwork is as follows:

1. XPS as a base, smoothed.
2. A layer of modelling paste.
3. Soil from the garden (sterilised) or fine sand coloured with powdered pigments.
4. Small to larger pebbles to depict bigger rocks.
5. Rooibos tea to depict fallen leaves.
6. Static grass and bushes. Fine turf by woodland scenics.

I still need to finish the sides, add some fallen branches, mushrooms and critters, but the base board is finished.

Sometimes simple solutions look so much better - i love it!
I just have one suggestion- the rocks look a bit plain and could use some random colored washes (and a base-colored drybrush afterwards).
If that sound a bit weird - there are a few tutorials around on that.

But honestly... that's a really beautiful board.

Thank your for the suggestion. I think the photo swallowed some of the colour nuances on the rock, I may need a better camera. I added some red and brown washes and yellow lichen. That said I was wondering if I should introduce some moss green and maybe add some more filters. I think I will wait until I added mushrooms, branches and trees. If the rock doesn't work with these additions I will add more washes. Thanks again for commenting!
