I love mystery boxes, if there's sufficient value. Random stuff is good, as long as you're not just buying a box of the crap a store can't get rid of on clearance.
You'll probably have a big problem with a sci-fi box (and why there isn't already one) is that sci-fi is too compartmentalized and narrow. You don't get a lot of crossover when the majority of sci-fi gamers are doing 40K and want 40K stuff. 40K look and feel scenery doesn't work with most other sci-fi games because of all the skulls. It's not quite the same scale either.
Fantasy works better because there's more crossover in terms of mini's (you can use any Orc as an Orc) and scenery (barrels or carts or taverns can be used in pretty much any pre-modern setting whether it's high fantasy or low fantasy).
