I'm about halfway through it and so far so good. this was a novel I was REALLY looking forward too as I thought Haley had hit it out of the park with Dark Imperium so far I'm greatly enjoying it. Haley's really managing to blend the 30k and 40k sensabilities in a unique and intreasting way, Haley's not shying away from showing intreasting things like Primaris Marines assigned to sucessor chapters suffering from a bit of a bitter culture shock

Does it feature the Eldar or Tau? Both factions also fought in the Plague War with the Ynnari claiming artifacts for Guillimen and the Tau fighting the Death Guards on their own border.

no, despite the title, the novel doesn't cover the entire plague war, simply one battle within it.. I just finished it so I'll give a short and sweet review, I'll try to avoid any major spoilers.

The Novel details the Battle of Parmenio, between the Realm of Ultramar, and the forces of Nurgle. a major part of the story is actually the emergance of a living Saint on the planet as the battle begins, and thus is one of our first examples of conflict between Gulliman and his rationalist supporters and the more faith oriented elements of the IoM. The novel also contains a B plot, in the form of focusing on Primaris Marine Sergent Justinian Parris whom has been assigned to the Novamarines, and his feelings of having trouble developing a sense of belonging to the chapter. AFAIK this is our first good in depth look at a Primaris Marine assigned to a sucessor chapter, and how hard it must be for some of them, as some sucessors have diverged an aweful lot from their founding legions, culturally speaking. Parris IMHO could have easily gotten an entire book dedicated to him and his defence of the star fortress he was on (apparently Ultramar has a "discount Phalanx" or two fun times!) and last but not least we also get a chapter of Titan on Titan action, that I can't help is Guy giving us previews of what we can expect in Titan Death.
Over all, I'd give this book a "reccomended" score.

Sounds great, that's exactly what I wanted to here. The best thing about him coming back is the fight with the ecclesiarchy and they are finally writing about it.

keep in mind that the fight isn't the ecclesiarchy outright attacking Gulliman or anything, but yeah there's definatly a conflict there. that said I think it's clear Haley is going somewhere with regards to Gulliman and his relationship with the Imperial Creed. intreasted to see how it all shakes out in a few years

"Discount Phalanx", is it not just something like a Ramillies-class star fortress? Those things are big enough to dock cruisers, and are capable of warp travel.

Never thought as much. I meant fight as in how you'd expect it. Actually fighting would still be cool, but it would be too much lore wise with the Indomitus crusade just starting, later on down the line it would be cool if there were some sort of reckoning, maybe with even more loyalist Primarchs, all joining together to put the Inquisition and ecclesiarchy in place.

If the novel doesn't cover the Plague War, why is it called such? Why not Plague War Series: Battle of Parmenio like what they did with The Beast Arises.

Because the time in which is set is during the Plague war.

Honestly a novel about the ENTIRE plague war'd proably be a hard thing to really follow and chances are the eldar and Tau's involvement would be basicly ignored, as they'd be SIDE actions, at best ypou'd get a throw away line like "we managed to retake planet X easier because a Tau strike on planet Y piunned reinforcements in place"

Just finished this, definitely the “middle act” but satisfying and the campaign has a good build up and resolution.

Top 3 things for me

- insight into Daemon culture
- insight into Primaris Marines finding their place in the galaxy
- Gullliman, as always, is fascinating and Haley is really exploring the conflicts that should reasonably arise with his return. It’s true to character and very well written

Agreed. IMHO people who think Gulliman's return is boring NEED to read the Guy Haley books that deal with him,

I am pretty new to 40k lore, having read the first 3 HH books, Master of Mankind, and just finishing Dark Imperium.

But is everyone talking about the "sequel" to Dark Imperium? Amazon seems to say that this book comes out in April 2019?

I enjoyed DI and would love to read the second part if it's out lol.

Please forgive my naivete.

it's out already, generally 40k books are avaliable direct from black library (and on GW store shelves) a month or two before you can get them at other locations. I buy almost all my 40k novels on blacklibrary.com in ebook format. I can get them the instant they're avliable and don't have to carry a buncha books around, seems a win to me
