As a fighter jet it fails on a lot of levels. Even with the established Imperial flying brick aesthetic, it still have a lot going wrong.
But I started to think of it as a helicopter gunship. Not as a sleek, lethal one, like an Apache. But a nice chunk of cold war soviet steel. Brutal, tough, mean. It stays in the air not from any feat of mechanics or aerodynamics, but because physics is too damn scared to tell it to crash.
Centurions are also growing on me, but mostly because I’ve seen some people do good things with the kit. Still don’t like them stock.
I still don't love him, and as I'm not an Ultramarines player, I'm never going to buy him, but I certainly don't revile him as much. With the right paint job, that gaudy filigree can be made much less offensive and since the release of the Primaris Marines, his scale and proportions make a lot more sense. I would say he went from horrendous to somewhat palatable in my book.

I think it is a horrible model, there is nothing you can do to make it good, I understand Ultramarine players will have to learn to love it but eerrgghhh, probably the worst model ever made.

Correction! Second worst model ever made:
Spoiler:
But yeah, perhaps "somewhat palatable" is being too generous. I mean, I can't see how the design team didn't just say, "Sorry Seb," (I think it was him anyway) "you're gonna have to give that one another go, mate." So disappointing. Especially considering how awesome Magnus was just several months earlier.

Yeah I don't even have the lord of skulls, I just use my kytan, that concept would have been great for nurgle, those large canisters in the back being poisens etc. It just looks stupid as a Khorne model.
Yeah I mean Fulgrim could rock that kind of armour. Guilliman is known to be a bit ostentatious, but not that much, he has a stoic side to him. Even I was disappointed in that model lol If I collected Ultramarines, I'd just use the HH model, that actually looks awesome.

Contemptors are one of mine. Thought they looked like boxy cheap action figures! You know, the sort of thing you'd find in a supermarket bargain bin.
After handling one in person though I've come to quite like them. Still the boxy action figure look, but in a kind of charming way haha
The plastic one is crazy expensive for how few options you get though. Picked mine up on eBay for a tenner and while it was a bit of a fixer upper I'm pretty happy with it.

So long multilators are a thing, they got nothing on them.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units." Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?" Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?" GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!" Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Agreed!
I don't play Chaos, but if I ever do Magnus will be an auto purchase. One of my favourite models in the game (though I'll probably go without the nipple spikes :p )

his proportions are just so bizarre...paired with his stance.
"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"
Epidemius. Didn't like him back then, but now I really favor the darker look from old Nurgle compared to the newer look. Unfortunately he's in failcast now which for me means he could as well be OOP. So I'm scouting ebay for a reasonable priced metal Epidemius every other week...
You did a great job. Can't imagine if have the patience to do a Morty, and so many different tones and colors needed too. Definitely an advanced project
P.S.A. I won't read your posts if you break it into a million separate quotes and make an eyesore of it.
Anything Nurgle. Used to hate the aesthetics and not just in a "ew that's gross" way but also in a "hey, those are far too easy to paint using washes and drybrushes, why is that Nurgle entry winning in this painting competition over my entry that took far more effort?" way
But after painting a few models myself and with the expanded DG range, I've come to appreciate the aesthetics a lot more. They are indeed fun to paint and Nurglings are just too comical.

For me, honestly its been the Daemon Engines. Namely Forgefiend, Maulerfiend, and Heldrake. I hated those models when they came out and though they were rediculous and represented a bad direction for chaos to be going. Now I have a soft spot in my cold dead heart for the giant mechanical monsters. I still haven't bought them yet, but I've strongly considered picking up a Maulerfiend to run alongside my Defiler and Sonic Dreadnaughts.

Every Death Guard unit. I thought that the models were far too busy, but they are really a pleasure to paint. They're so much more detailed than normal CSM stuff, and really reward concerned attention. They're never a grind to get through.
And provided you avoid the god-awful GW paint scheme they come up a treat!
World Eaters: 5780pts
Khorne Daemons: 3450pts
Chaos Knights: 2000pts
Sisters of Battle: 5000pts
Imperial Agents: 410pts
Gloomspite Gitz: 7190pts
Blades of Khorne Daemons: 3810pts
Skaven: 1270pts
Destruction Mercenaries: 470pts
Endless Spells and Incarnates: 1380pts
This thread got me thinking, and I realized...none. I've never changed my mind wholesale on a miniature from a design perspective. Now that doesn't includ kit-bashing, modifying/saving a model and turning it from crap to acceptable. I suspect that's possible with many bad kits. I've seen paintjobs makes some models look 10x better...but the sculpt is still crap to start with (so you're masking a poor miniature with an amazing paintjob).
I'm still trying to think of any which I've changed my mind on over the years - but I can't think of any thus far.
Armiger warglaives. Used to think they were wierd and spindly, especially compared to the big knights, but then I started liking them a little more and when the helverins came out, that was the tipping point
HoundsofDemos wrote:That looks amazing. GW really didn't do the new death guard kits justice with it's paint scheme. They feel kinda flat and blah.
They always have such skillful work but it's rare that I don't look at a paintjob they did and just think "well, thats the dullest paint scheme they could have gone for". I guess they just want to put a pretty basic representation of the model out there to sell.
