I just saw a shadespire warband I would like to collect and I was wondering as someone who has never played it, what do I need to start? Obviously a warband but what else? I really don’t want to buy a starter set and have 2 warbands I don’t need or use

If you know someone that already plays and has the board and dice, you'll only need the band.

Otherwise:

Band
Dice
Board
The expansion, Echoes of Glory. This will give you additional cards to use for your deck.
Tokens would also be neat, but I don't think GW sells them on their own. Maybe one day they'll also include some token with the warband.

The thing about the starter set is that it includes a bunch of other stuff that you will likely need:
Two boards (you need at least one, two if you want to practice or introduce new players).
The Rules (kinda important)
Dice (three types, all custom)
Tokens (objective hexes are the most important but the rest are handy)
Cards (yes, even if you don’t play the bands in the box; there are generic cards everyone can use in there)

You can buy dice, some generic cards, and boards separately, but I’m pretty sure they add up to about the same cost as the boxed set. Or near enough…
