Hi there, so I picked up the Exalted Scythe Kill Team expansion. This pack includes some cards detailing example terrain layouts you can set up if you've also bought the Wall of Martyrs killzone expansion. So with the two imperial defense lines included in this box, it's assumed you have at minimum:

4x Defense lines
1x Bunker
1x Defense implacements

So you'd think these cards would feature layouts that let you take advantage of the extra defense lines that come in this set.. But none of them use more than the two you'd already have in the killzone, and all of them require two defense implacements instead. Please tell me if I'm the only one who doesn't get this.

I know this isn't important at all and is a major nitpick; you can layout your board however you want, it doesn't matter, but it's just breaking my brain thinking about why they'd include these cards that don't use the parts from the set you just bought, and require you to have more parts than are in either of the sets you're likely to have if you bought this one.

Fun fact: if you assemble the terrain included in the core set exactly as shown in the included directions, it's impossible to exactly replicate the suggested terrain layouts in most of the scenarios in the core rule book. This is just not a thing they care that much about.

I don't think I do either, though. Those layout suggestions comprise maybe 0.01% of the overall value of the product (my opinion, of course). I guess in the end I'm agreeing with you that it's kind of an oddity, but I see it more as a shoulder shrug than a brain wracker.

All of the missions terrain layouts are nothing more than an idea. I've never actually seen someone pay any attention to them.

Would have got this set if the terrain had been more Necron-y.

Those trenches look plain boring!

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

It's not odd to find this odd. But like others have mentioned, most people just set up terrain any way they darn well please themselves. A suggestion is just that, a suggestion. Of course, the Kill Zone boxes, especially when bought from discounter sites, are almost a steal. Look at that Death World Forest. If you buy this from the GW Warhammer 40.000 Terrain; €105. By it as a kill zone: €65. You get one or two small pieces of Shardwreck Spines less, but it does include the cardboard play mat, the cards, and the manual. €40 difference for almost the same contents.

As for the Wall of Martyrs defense line itself looking boring... that's in the eye of the beholder. As a player who has a large Imperium collection, both in Imperial Guard and Space Marines, the terrain fits. For T'au and Necrons, not so much. Then it looks off somehow. But then again, there isn't much in the Necron Terrain department, and the T'au Tidewall would probably make for a very empty but nice Kill Zone box, and a rather expensive Kill Team box. So we'll probably have to make due with what we got.

Quite true. In the end I went with the Writhing Shadow for the tokens and it worked out cheaper. Later on I might do a box of immortals and whip up some Necon scenery, Blue Peter style.
