I got pulled into warhammer back in the end of 5th edition. That whole era, between 5th and 6th... the spirit of the development and the game overall was heavily steeped in campaign work, optional rules where you could see what happens before a battle to motivate your troops, map campaigns, and the skirmish supplement that influenced the oncoming big battle.

I loved every minute of it. A lot of my issue with warhammer followed into 7th edition with the tournamentifying of the game and the loss of that spirit overall (i felt).

I read Vanguard and I'm instantly transported back to the early 2000s with the General's Compendium and the Rick Priestly articles and just everything that enticed me into the warhammer world.

I have to say that Vanguard is well done. Thank you mantic.

Just had my first game and it seemed to work well enough.

I think my impression is a bit clouded though by some bad luck and being up against Nightstalkers which meant none of my opponent's Warriors died.

The only glaring problem is the need for many Tokens, but I working on a solution.

I was running with round bases and colouring the base at the rear 90 degree mark seemed to do the trick well enough even if line of sight is extended a bit.

I am looking forward to the next game, even if I am not impressed with my Basileans performance against the Nightstalkers.

I just downloaded the free rules, hoping for a chance to try something out this weekend. It is workable with the free rules, right?

Hopefully going to try out my nature guys either as nature or trident realms, not sure which yet.

realism is a lie

Yes the free rules should be enough to play, you just won't have all the options

The best way to balance that is to limit all warbands to what is in the book - even if their army already has cards.

Two battles against my wife's Night Stalkers - in the second, she made the mistake of having her commander too close to the giant, and somehow managed to get it killed.... *EDIT* Capture the Giant was the mission - and now my Goody Two Shoes variant warband will have a giant in the first League battle against her Night Stalkers. (The only way my warband is a variant is that it is Good - since I use Jarvis in my KoW Undead army, it seemed reasonable.)

I had cast a spell with my Necromancer to weaken it, not so the giant could kill it, but so that I could mob it with my zombies. I wanted to clear her away from the big guy, so I could capture it. (She was using a Fleshripper Butcher as her leader - I had to weaken it, since otherwise it would have mowed through my zeds.)

Instead... *SPLAT!* Thank the gods that she is a forgiving sort.

The reason I bought rules and became a real wargamer was because I wanted a properly thought out structure to govern the action instead of just making things up as I went along.

I'm yet to play a game, but the rules look really good. And I have a lot of fun painting and assembling my Kickstarter giant pledge. I really hope for that Mordheim-vibe like back in the days.
Nice to have a new forum here, btw.

I've played three games with my TR vs my son's Basileans and I really like this system.

TR play differently in this system. They have different strengths and weaknesses, most notably they are FAST with Rising Tide (2). That was a shocker! The Thull Mythican is more of a spell caster than a melee beat stick and the Riverguard are shooters with their javelins instead of violent attackers as in KoW. All of these variations on the Troop types make the Vanguard TR a very thematic raiding/scouting party.

I really hope that they add Placoderms to the team as my Eckter mini is one of my favorites.

I had also heard they planned on doing a Siege ruleset using Vanguard. Definitely interested in that.

I don't know about that, but Clash of Kings 2019 has Siege rules for regular KoW.

KoW:Vanguard does have Campaign rules for growing and improving your warband, but I have not read those yet. Need to play the basic game a few time first.

We are going to try Vanguard in our group of KoW players. What is the recommended size of the game, 200 points? Or would you recommend to try it out at much smaller points limit.

200 points should be fine since they are already KoW players. For the first game probably don't need any more Retinue assignments other than the Leader and maybe the Mauler. Some of the Retinue pay off during campaigns but if the first game is just an intro they won't get to shine.

Thanks for your answer. Is there already a consensus on what is an "ideal" size of a warband. I mean at what points is Vanguard assumed to work best or what would be a standard tournament size (similar to 2000-2250 points for KoW).

200 points is the standard size to put a warband on the table. For campaigns, which is where this game can get really addictive, 400 points is the standard for a Company. The extra 200 points of the Company is a reserve, kind of like a sideboard in Magic: The Gathering. Throughout the acampaign your Warband will lose fighters who will need to be replaced by the reserves in the Company.
