EDIT: Revised to correct the points for magic items for some armies.
EDIT 2: Added Chaos Hounds to Beastmen and removed the Harpies.
EDIT 3: Revised my Dark Elves.
EDIT 4: Added Vampire Counts!

Okay guys, you are in for a real treat.

When we started this journey together, I set out to buy the last three WFB starter sets, and then expanded on my collection of armies by buying the Battalion sets. Initially I set out to just collect up to 700 points, but as the Battalion sets came with more minis than I needed at that point total, and peer pressure from you guys, I have been going back and filling in my original starter armies, and in some cases, filling in gaps in my starter armies.

And after months of buying, I have finalized my army lists. I am listing these as I have them, in 700 points and in the expanded 1000 points. I know that's a lot to read through, but I am not giving up on smaller 700 point games!

Generally I have had some minis here and there left over, so I have added as many heros as possible as I like them, and have tried to make balanced armies based on what I have.

I have to say this is the most excited I have been about collecting for a game in a long, long time. Still can't believe I missed out on all this in it's hayday.

So here are my armies, using Ravening Hordes:

Phew! My fingers are tired. And I am blind. But thats it, what do you all think? I am sure you are wondering about the Vampire Counts but I am taking a break from purchasing anymore right now. Some day I imagine I will get those guys too. I did buy my Vampire already (the Mordheim one with the sword).

I have to be honest I am pretty happy I went with the Starters and Battalion sets: they give me nice boxes to hold everything in. But they give me just enough flavor for each of the armies and a ton to work on over the next decade :/

Man I’m jealous of all those factions. Would love to do that as well (and I have semi started, I have 4) but I probably won’t expand too much (though I’m eyeing Lizardmen) as this gak is already expensive.

Finally have enough High Elves and Skaven built to play a 1k game which I did at the game store yesterday with a friend who plays 40k. So it was his first fantasy game. We had a lot of fun. Slowly getting them all painted and will add on after I play a few more games with this points total.

Anyway enjoy your figs and may you have many fun games soon with them!

Well thank you!

For the record this has cost me a bundle but I didn't buy it all at once. Its been a work in progress over the last few months. And it has helped to use the Battalion sets as a base. Some were more expensive than others (for example, while the Dark Elf battalion was expensive, the only additional cost was a sorcerer and some bits to make a Commander, while for the Empire it took a lot more purchases). I really have tried to save money here and there, using leftover parts for heros and what not, but I think the most important thing is to limit the size of the armies as I have to spread the money around. Would I rather have 3 different 1000 point armies or 1 3000 point army? Well I would take the 3 every time. If there is one thing I love about WFB is the flavor of the armies which is why I have gotten so many of them. I think the most I ever had for 40k was 4. And this has made me happy I never went with more. 40k blows.

I also have Mordheim and are big on Skirmish, so the variety helps me explore some other ways to play the game. And I guess if I ever wanted to do bigger games, which I doubt, I could ally the guys I have up.

I have been lurking your threads. Has been very entertaining and informative. And I hear you on wanting multiple armies. It’s great to be able to get a game whenever you want because you can loan someone an army. But I do like bigger battles so I will probably stick to my 4 armies which I’m just about done collecting for and I should not sink anymore money into minis when I have a stack of boxes still need assembling and my current armies still need full painting.

Still my gaming group dreams of one day having every faction among the now 5 of us. But 2 are only interested In Collecting 40k, though they still join in on fantasy.

Crap I just realized that Heros can only have up to 50 points of magic items so I have some adjusting to do. I have been using magic items to fill in the points I need to complete the point totals.

The above collections do not include characters which have no points limit because I can swap in any. Armies are limitedto either 3k or 4k, initially 4k but some dropped to 3k when I made my Daemons of Nurgle army as the army was very samey when large. I dont expect to play games larger than 3k, the 4k limit is to allow room for swaps without having a runaway budget. Characters are not included in the quota, but a variable mount of points is set aside for a realistic set of characters. I do not limit characters because they are not a critical expenditure compared to units, because they offer disproportionate variance with only one or two models exchanged and because different factions are full with different numbvers of characters added. I have a large cadre of Empire characters because there are a lot of special characters to choose from, specific and distinct spell casters and a large variety of support characters. Vampire Counts have the most variance because of the number of Vampire bloodlines avilable and also due to a wide variety of support characters and special characters, My ogres however have considerably fewer characters because there is no need for more, and I didn't like what they had for special characters. I cant balance my character allowances for collections so I didnt even try, but i do balance the armies themselves to pfrevent spending getting out of hand. Not that is isnt anyway with collection this large.

I added to the above document with two more factions:

Spoiler:
Second look at Dwarfs

AOS Dwarf Army
11th November 2017, £245 plus £20 postage, paid 17th November.
This auction lot went for just under my spending cap, timed my second snipe about 3 seconds early.

"Fantastic dwarf warhammer Aos army.
Well built and hardly touched so you can Finish to the way you want it!
Army contains
Command choices
52 warriors including 2 commands, arms not attached so you can decide load out
20 hammerers with command
20 long beards with command
20 thundered
40 quarrellers
2 gyrocopters magnetised
Cannons and crew magnetised"

Can produce three warrior units of twenty, or two of twenty five, depending on models to convert to command.
This army has potentially too many quarrellers, however if I do not insist on full muster for this faction variety is possible with an entirely missile based army.
Room to include a unit of Slayers (getting started has ten Slayers, two Slayer characters and slayer on a magmadroth). The latter with choice of two riders makes an interesting gift.

Nurgle Daemon Prince

only 2173pts for the army, ok for 3k, for 4k a very heavy character alocation is needed. Or write off 4k gaming.

All the lists here are for 9th Age 1.1, but i can transfer armies into 8th or 6th also. indeed I generally have to to use special characters properly. I had to choose one system for point balancing though and for harnessing the collection, and I chose early build 9th Age for balance. Needless to say some units disappear or have different costings in different editions.

My armies are set for factions surrounding Marienburg, using various references including Total War Warhammer as canon:

Spoiler:
Empire - Reikland
Bretonnians - Couronne border marches
High Elves - Expedition force
Dark Elves - Clar Karond
Orcs - Skullsmasherz, horde of Ugrok Craktoof, from Grung Zint
Dwarfs - Throng of Karak Ziflin, King Rorek Granitehand
Vampire Counts - Lahmian, Von Carstein, Necrarch or Necromancer
Ogre Kingdoms - generic mercenary army
Warriors of Chaos - Chaos Undivided, horde of Archaon, Kholek or Crom
Daemons of Chaos - Nurgle army

I started and restarted a full and final writeup of some factions. Including painting plans. So far I got as far as a writeup of the empire only. Though some armies are already mostly finalised prior to this project and dont need write ups.

my Empire writeup, to give an idea of how deep the rabbt hole goes:

Spoiler:
*** 4kpt 9th Age Armies ***
25th September 2017, updated 27th March 2018

Each army must be 4000pts, with minimum 1000pts core, and approx 3000pts without characters, averaging at approx 1500pts special, and approx 500pts rare. Both the latter will depend on core size. Hard limit for special and rare choices is 2000pts total.
Ideally each army should have a small overlap for core, but special and rare are hard limits. Characters have no upper limit at all as they are a selection range which varies widely by faction availability.

1. EMPIRE

Celestial Hurricanum £32.50 - £24 paid 26/9, also paid £54 for a lot more

Steam tank kit, watched 1/4/18

LORDS 979pts

Kurt Helborg
~ Special character cavalry model.

Imperial General 184/164pts
Marshal 90pts, Great Tactician +30pts or Seasoned General +10pts
plate armour, shield +3pts, Hero sword +30pts and pistol +6pts
riding a barded warhorse +25pts
Hero sword: +1S (max S5), +1A (max 4A)
~ Uses multipart Empire General with fancy horse, sword, crow shield, feathered hat and cloak. More or less as depicted on the box, though the skeleton relief on the steed was replaced, also needed to deskull the feathered hat. Distinctive from other knight characters for not wielding a lance. Not necessarily added to a cavalry unit. The sword is a Runefang, with correct runes for same. Possibly use with Imperial Prince upgrade instead of Great Tactician. Hero sword is perfect for an Empire Marshal, as it hits the cap when either Seasoned General or Great Tactician.
This model is my most likely general with sword and 1+ save.

Griffon Lord 249pts
Marshal 90pts
plate armour, shield +3pts and lance +6pts
Talisman of Shielding (4++) +50pts
riding a Griffon +100pts
~ Uses High Elf griffin and converted Empire legs, with replacement torso and knight arms for full plate. Uses the Empire General set lance helm and shield. May model a throne for the rider, if not then a magnificent plume is required.
It may be beneficial to make this model a general with Great Tactician for +30pts to utilise the 18" command range and Inspiring Presence.

Magister 250pts
Master Wizard 170pts, level 4 +30pts
Staff of Power +50pts
Staff of Power: +1 to casting and dispel
~ See Wizards below. No mount is assumed.

Arch Lector 296pts or Volkmar the Grim (points special)
Prelate 90pts
heavy armour, great hammer +6pts
War Altar of Sigmar 200pts drawn by two armoured steeds
~ May be modelled with a generic Arch Lector or Grand Theogonist Volkmar the Grim, currently our only special character. A general on the War Altar gains 6" increased Inspiring Presence. The War Altar offers an excellent defence of 4+/4++, one could purchase barded steeds upgrade for 2pts upgrading armour save to 3+, however it is not necessary and there is no option to upgrade the Hurricanum despite having similiar horses. Consequently the barding is included in the 4+ save already present. As there is no need for a ward or cause for a magic weapon for the prelate there is room here for a powerful support magic item. The Wizard's Hat is an excellent option for +40pts as it further boosts the War Altar's magic, a safer alternative is the Ring of Fire for +25pts, neither is included by default.

HEROES 1011pts including any three wizards

Imperial Herald 110pts
Captain 60pts, Battle Standard Bearer +25pts
plate armour +10pts
riding a barded warhorse +15pts
~ Uses multipart Empire General on foot, sallet helm, with mace arm, custom banner pole (it's taller) and the Gamezone metal standard. The steed is the spare Empire general's steed, and has had a head replacement. Model has a 2+ save because of no shield. This is a minimalist BSB.

Imperial Herald 120pts
Captain 60pts, Battle Standard Bearer +25pts
Armour of Meteoric Iron +35pts and sword.
Armour of Meteoric Iron: 1+ save
~ Uses MOM Miniaturas resin standard bearer on foot, this is a one piece model arart from the standard crest and weapon arm, which needed replacing. This figure is not especially well armoured. This model has only partial plate armour with some fluted cloth sleeving, but it is enough for plate. The miniature is based standing on a large resin slate rock for extra stature. the banner is especially impressive and stands as high as the other BSB model.

Pegasus Rider 123pts
Captain 60pts
plate armour +10pts, shield +2pts and lance +6pts
riding a Pegasus +45pts
~ Uses metal pegasus knight miniature with reconstructed torso. The original torso and lance is too squat. Uses the lion helm to not detract from the throne. Uses the Empire General helm, and wears the original shield. May include a cloak, either high elf or chaos charioteer.
This is a budget combat character and is not weighted down with magic items. May upgrade to include Flaming Lance +4(+10)pts, Enchanted shield +3(+5)pts, or Gemstone Amulet +15pts.

Greatsword Captain 89pts
Captain 60pts
plate armour +10pts, Black Helm +15pts and greatsword +4pts
Black Helm: basic 6+ save (total 3+), causes fear.
~ Stock plastic Empire captain model, using the plumed helm. Included to grant Orders to the greatsword unit, to enable Stubborn and to mitigate any fear tests as they handle monstrous infantry. I have seperated the lanyard and cloak for later, I might not add either.

Knight Captain 109pts
Captain 60pts
plate armour +10pts and great hammer +4pts. Ironcurse Icon +20pts
riding a barded warhorse +15pts
Ironcurse Icon: 5++ against artillery for the bearers unit.
~ Empire Knight warhorse with mounted Empire General rider with great hammer. Included to preserve strength after the charge of knight units and to maintain an effective armour save (2+) while using a great weapon. As my knights will be lance armed this will be useful, but this captain may be unattached to support any unit that requires his aid.

~ Knights do not benefit from Orders making captains less useful to them than warrior priests, hence I only need one mounted captain model. I might not even build one.
If possible I could magnetise at the torso and make a great hammer captain/mounted BSB, or simply add a mounted Herald option.

Warpriest of Sigmar 96pts
Warrior Priest 65pts
heavy armour and greathammer +6pts.
riding a barded warhorse +25pts
~ Stock metal mounted warrior priest model. To add to the primary knight unit, greathammer adds to the sustained power of the unit, but the model only has a 3+ save. Blessings are highly effective with knights, especially imbuing a ward save and/or rerolling wounds. This addition will greatly increase survivability and combat of a the knights.

Warpriest of Sigmar 68pts
Warrior Priest 65pts
heavy armour, two hammers +3pts and holy tome.
~ Older metal warrior priest model. To add to any line infantry block. As this may be my general it may be better to replace him with a flasher model.

Witch Hunter 71pts
Inquisitor 60pts
heavy armour, brace of pistols +5pts and greatsword +6pts
~ Stock finecast witch hunter model.

Witch Hunter 71pts
Inquisitor 60pts
heavy armour, brace of pistols +5pts and greatsword +6pts
~ MOM Miniaturas female witch hunter model.

Master Engineer 65pts
Engineer 55pts
light armour, sword, long rifle +10pts and spyglass.
~ Old metal model, complete with grovelling assistant.

~ There is a second simpler engineer model with spyglass and repeater handgun. Likely modify slightly to use as Veteran champion when a unit of handgunners is upgraded to veterans, and signifying same. In which case use the sniper as the engineer model.

Battle Wizard @90pts (plus items)
Wizard 65pts, level 2 +25pts
~ Celestial Wizard: Collegiate Arcane kit model with astrolabe staff and orb.
~ Gold Wizard: Collegiate Arcane kit model with comet staff and tome, converted from orb wizard pose.
~ Jade Wizard: Mounted metal model.
~ Amethyst Wizard: Collegiate Arcane kit model with rose scythe staff and hourglass. Cant resist including this one.
~ Grey Wizard: Collegiate Arcane kit model with raised sword and converted arm, with no staff. Requires a classic wizard head, or female.
~ Light Wizard: Hurricanum set bonus model.
~ Amber Wizard: Metal model.
~ Bright Wizard: Spire of Dawn High mage conversion, female head to be aquired ?Statuesque?.

~ Maybe restrict to: Celestial, Light and Grey at start. Then Bright Jade and Amethyst. Finally Gold and Amber. I dont really want an Amethyst wizard, but I have one and he looks great. Amber is least wanted and needs a specific miniature, but if I have six or seven wizards I will want them all, so I bought him.
Now at least one wizard is to be mounted and at least one female. Best options for the female are Gold, Jade, Grey or Bright wizards. Bought a mounted Jade wizard.

Notes:
~ There are two flying mounts available, both for fighter characters, ghis is more than adequate provision for an Empire army. Will have three knightly mounted characters from the outset with a metal grand master model to consider adding after, and I might also have a single mounted wizard. In addition there is the War Altar which will be magnetised to provide either a Prelate or the special character Volkmar the Grim.

~ I may buy replacement infantry warrior priest models. Dual wield is not too useful, a shield might serve better, and a Prelate on foot is a practical general and needs to be modelled adequately. May include a magnetised Celestial and.or Light wizard lord for the Arcane Engine. If so the pulpit will be fully removable and magnetised.

~ One character needed to be added to the greatswords, he will provide stubborn via the bodyguard ability. The Herald and a Warpriest/Prelate to be added to the spears in deep formation. This assumes a Prelate general on or off the War Altar, or an attached mounted general.

~ I may be tempted to add other special characters, Karl Franz is to be considered as is Balthasar Gelt. Karl Franz torso will be magnetised to fit a horse, Deathclaw or on foot. Balthasar Gelt may be a total conversion. Neither possibility is listed at present.

~ It is legally possible to add all Lord characters to a 4000pt army, it is not possible to include all available Hero choices.

CORE 1045pts

Livery Spearmen 230pts
40 Spearmen 80pts for 20, +20 @5pts
light armour, spear @+1pt/2 and shield
Full command +30pts with Veteran Standard Bearer
~ State troops. This unit will have the new burgundy and white colours of Reikland, the champion will be similarly dressed but for a more ornate helmet and carrying a sword. I may convert him from a regular spearman. If deployed as horde, all models can potentially attack; if deployed in deeper ranks four ranks can fight with Orders. Six files and seven ranks with two characters, a Captain and a second character, most likely a Warpriest.

Levy Halberdiers 160pts
25 Halberdiers 80pts for 20, +10 @5pts
light armour and halberd @+1pt
Full command +30pts
~ Local troops. Deploy as a block with no attached characters. These soldiers have no formal uniform and may carry the purple and white colours of Bogenhaven. The unit champion will be better armoured but also halberd armed.

Handgunner Company 180pts
20 Handgunners 80pts for 10, +10 @7pts
handgun and dagger
Full command +30pts
~ State troops. This unit will have the burgundy and white colours of Reikland.

Handgunner Company 180pts
20 Handgunners 80pts for 10, +10 @7pts
handgun and dagger
Full command +30pts
~ State troops. This unit will have the burgundy and white colours of Reikland. I will include an additional champion miniature with repeater handgun to signify either of the two handgunner companies upgraded to veterans.

Mercenary Crossbowmen 180pts
20 Crossbowmen 80pts for 10, +10 @7pts
crossbow and dagger
Full command +30pts
~ Mercenaries or local troops. No formal uniform and displaying either the purple and white colours of Bogenhaven, or the red and blue of Altdorf.

Militia Free Company 115pts
15 Militiamen 40pts for 10, +5 @4pts
sword and pistol @+2pts, skirmishers @+1pt
Champion +10pts
~ Irregular mercenaries, with Bogenhaven or Altdorf connexions. No musician or standard bearer present or needed, I might make this unit less rough than the GW free company miniatures imply. Puffed sleeves and panash is called for, but no armour. The unit should have two rough ranks to guarantee all can fire.

Notes:
~ The standard colour scheme is for Reikland based on the new revised colours from Total War Warhammer of broadly equal burgundy and white. Some variation is possible however the core of the army consisting of the handgunner and spearmen companies will be in uniform.

~ Suggested outlays, full muster requires all core troops.
2000pt army mixed line: Halberdiers, Handgunners and Crossbowmen. 520pts
2000pt army gunline: Crossbowmen and both Handgunners. 540pts
2000pt army infantry core: Spearmen, Free Company and Crossbowmen (or Handgunners). 525pts
2400pt army mixed line: Halberdiers, Handgunners, Crossbowmen and Free Company. 635pts
2400pt army infantry core: Thirty spearmen, Halberdiers and Handgunners and Free Company. 630pts
3000pt army mixed line: Spearmen, Halberdiers, Handgunners and Crossbowmen. 750pts

SPECIAL 1387pts (1597pts with all artillery)

Landsknechts 335pts
30 Greatswords 65pts for 10, +20 @9pts
plate armour and greatsword @+2pts
Full command +30pts
~ Not quite full plate. Burgundy and white of Reikland for the uniforms.

Huntsmen 110pts
10 Archers 50pts for 5, +5 @10pts
bow and sword.
Champion +10pts
~ Black undercoat, some repair of bows required. No uniform, may wear either greens or buff jack. May remove champion and or split the unit into two. Will use two five man skirmish trays used separately or together.

Reiksguard Knights 357pts
12 Order Knights 145pts for 5, +7 @26pts
plate armour, shield and lance
Riding a barded warhorse
Full command +30pts
~ Maximum unit size and the most realistic deployment. This unit can form three full ranks with three characters added, more realistically drop knights to replace them with characters. Reiksguard are the natural choice for this squadron, and it looks good.

Pistoliers 110pts
6 Light Horse 75pts for 5, +1 @15pts
light armour and pistol
Riding a cavalry horse
Champion and musician +20pts
~ Only two models have a brace of pistols and one will need to be converted to the musician, the other will be converted to wield a sword or point. Considering replacing the unit with ten new Pistoliers with Brace of pistols, champion and musician [190pts].

Flagellants 140pts
15 Flagellants 100pts for 10, +5 @8pts
flails, chains and fanaticism
~ For soiled grimdark flavour. No command models for theme, though several wannabe leader models present in the unit.

Artillery Battery
Up to three of the following:
Cannon 100pts
Cannon 100pts
Mortar 110pts
Mortar 110pts
Helblaster 125pts
each with three gun crew.
~custom 80mm x 80mm bases. One of each assumed for default configuration.

RARE 481pts

Demigryph Knights 341pts
6 Knights 140pts for 3, +3 @47pts
plate armour, shield and lance @+5pts
Riding a demigryph
Full command +30pts
~ Combine the standard bearer and musician and or give the champion a lance. The barding will be japponed, the knights armour may be burnished but likely not japponed. I may choose to mount these on 40x60 bases, 50x75 looks too big.

Arcane Engine 140pts
~ Luminark or Hurricanum. For 9th Age I am likely to fashion my own, a Hurricanum with the orientation of a Luminark and a swappable top. In 9th Age the Foresight/Hurricanum is clearly superior, but the Lightning spell of the Hurricanum better fits the Luminark model top. The Arcane Engine can be used as a mount for a Lord level wizard only at a discount of only 10pts. This will offer little miscast mitigation and is entirely unworthwhile as while it doubles up both models, it provides no saving anf makes the wizard lord vulnerable.

ARMY SUMMARY

~ A full muster at 4000pts including all artillery models is legal and leaves 877pts spare for a selection of characters. This is enough for a good selection of characters. Examples include:
4000pt full army: Griffon Lord with Great Tactician general's ability, Prelate on War Altar of Sigmar, Imperial Herald, Wizard and greatsword Captain. 874pts
4000pt full army: Imperial General with Seasoned General, Magister, Imperial Herald, Pegasus Knight with Gemstone Amulet, Warpriest, Witch Hunter and Engineer. 876pts

~ An full muster obeying standard army limits leaves 1087pts spare. This leaves the character allocation very open, too open to offersimilar to the broad points budget available to other factions of approximately 1000pts. A Great Tactician General riding a Griffon, Magister, Prelate on War Altar of Sigmar and Imperial Herald come to 945pts allowing 142pts for two hero level charcters, for instance a Witch Hunter and Warpriest. This is enough for character variety while still keeping three potent Lord level characters and the Battle Standard as default inclusion.

~ There is a symmetry for the army. All three current cavalry units have the same frontage. All six main infantry units can be deployed in horde, though three do so by happenstance, and thus have the same frontage. Though there are good reasons to avoid this.

~ This army is missile heavy, half the units in the army, excluding war machines and characters have missile weapons, and all three light units are missile armed.

To me the above are just formal 'notes'. I kind of get carried away, because I love my hobby.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

To start with, every army is a personal affair, and composition will be to taste.

That being said, it's kind of good that you're taking the whole 10 man unit thing across all armies as you won't be surprised by a 25 man superblock which will thump you with combat resolution alone.

I'd stick a Battle Standard Bearer in every army. Even at low points battles, the BSB's abilities are well worth it. You don't even have to load it up with the max magic banner, just the reroll aura is enough to make it worth it. Just have a champion in the unit to parry challenges with.

I see you already spotted some of your Heroes are over 50pts magic equip, Also note that each magic item (except dispel scrolls and power stones in 6th, if I remember correctly) are one of a kind in each army.

Otherwise nice small warbands. I like that.

Orlanth... Those are some insane numbers. Do you have these models assembled let alone painted? One of the reasons I went with the minimum unit size is that I would have a hard time following through painting the same guys over and over again. I am really eclectic, and have a million different interests going on at once, so it hard for me to concentrate on finishing anything the size you are dealing with.

You know, this is a good idea, and while I wasn't interested in the Army Standards before, I see how not only would they have looked cool, but it would have filled out some points. I think the biggest problem is that my armies are kind tight as it is, I really don't have much room to spare, and if I were to give one army a army standard, I would want all of them to have it, and I can't.

ARRGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!! I forgot about the items being used more than once too. I have Talismans of Protection all over the place. Ok last night I went back and played with some of the armies. I managed to re-arrange some things and its only to cost me another Goblin Bolt Thrower :/ Well then again, what good was only 1 going to be anyway? But I was hoping I was done spending money at this point. I revised my lists above.

I did however, have to go to 55 points on magic items for some guys. I just don't have the models to make up for the point loss for even some 700 point armies. So I hope no one thinks 55 is a big deal.

I do like the caps btw. When I was making my lists I was thinking how you could make a pretty powerful guy for a small game, and I was trying to keep everything balanced. I really do not want anything uber-powerful at these army sizes.

I think now one would complain really if you are 5 points above that limit if you're playing at your place, drinking beer and eating potato chips, enjoying a game with friends. In a tournament well that is another story of course.

The armies seem to be playable on that scale. 10ers for regular or elite infantry, 20 for the cheap chaff units, 5 cavalry models per unit. Seems fine. Not too many war machines, and not the ones that are too hefty at these small points like volley guns.

Collected, going through assembly and painting in sequence. I am taking my time wirth this. But it does include already collected armies, which were Empire, Brets and high Elves, only the first two were painted and the empire collection was lost somehow and needed replacing.

I (re)started with a Warriors of Chaos army in 2015 shortly after WHFB was squatted, I had refused to give GW any of my money in the Kirby years ad my armies were fallow. Now with a change of management, a change in pricing policy and the removal of support for WHFB I knew I had to buy now or miss out. The above armies have absorbed nearly all my hobby money for the last three years, I have delayred my new computer build for them, and all other major expenditures that were not 40K Conquest and the odd Kickstarter.

I got there in time to buy most of what I wanted before it became unavailable, about three armies are on the sprue, the rest assembled with painting done in fairly random order to keep it fresh. I consider it a full larder of things I can do rather than a daunting task facing me. I am currently doing Dwarf Slayers, Black Knights, Nurglings and Chaos Spawn for four different armies at the same time, it keeps it interesting and fresh. Last thing I completed was a unit of handgunners and a Vampire Count character conversion. So I flitter around a lot.

I too have been buying up what fantasy I want due to it now being out of print and unsupported. I told my group it is the cheapest now it will probably ever be.

2 years of collecting and I have 4 armies (2 with 1k points built) with enough to make 2k each minus my chaos maybe (it’s at least 1500 tho)

Would like to get a 40k army too but that won’t be going out of print anytime soon and I don’t mind waiting till the next edition anyway. More interested in fantasy (which I could always use for AOS if I feel inclined)

Yeah I agree and everything I have been buying has been in the old school WFB boxes, none of that AOS stuff even if the minis are the same.

I just picked up the High Elves Warrior Regiment to make my spearmen. Only a couple of purchases and I am done.

So I say.

There is no such thing as complete. Like it or not you will eventually want to push up against 1500 or 2000 lists or add new armies... How about dogs of war? Or a custom list of berserker mermen.

I restarted 6th with getting a small (1000pt) O&G army to oppose my Dogs. Three years later and my O&G is now at about 3000pt with my Dogs now being around 4500. I don't stick to GW though and have loads of other companies stuff included.

I tried to stay old school but 2 witch elves boxes are Sigmar, 2 Doomfire warlock/dark rider boxes are Sigmar (though the auction was set up to look like fantasy but I got a nice partial refund so I didn’t complain), and I got the slaves to darkness box set to add to my old school WOC battalion box.

I’m a fantasy poser.

I almost picked up that same Slaves to Darkness set, but then I figured by the time I tracked down Marauders and square bases it would cost me more than the average old Chaos Battalion was going for on Ebay.

UPDATE: So one of the few things I still had to buy was a unit of 5 Harpies for my Beastmen, but after seeing the Chaos Hounds in my Chaos Warriors army could be used by the Beastmen, I am just going to borrow those guys for now. After the swapping of magic items around my list was 988 and with the swapping of the Harpies for the Hounds, it now comes to 998, which I like better.

I do prefer units to be unique to the armies I have, so I imagine one day I will buy the Harpies, but this frees up some cash to buy something else.

Anyone want to comment on which would be better? 10 Hounds vs the 5 Harpies? I have to be honest at first I thought the hounds were lame, but now I am happy they came in the Battalion set. I doubt I would have gone after them separately, and I think they are pretty cool models.

Given you're running Ravening Hordes list, the Hounds actually negate rank bonus whereas Harpies as a skirmishing unit never will. Harpies will just about ONLY be viable to hunt war machines or the odd Scouting unit.

Ah of course...

Or maybe hunting down heros as well! Interesting I never thought of using them that way.

They are on my list to get, just down the road.

Strategy Time!

While I still have a ton of assembly to do, I wanted to day dream about tactics. I was thinking what might be the best way to use each of my armies based on the units I have. I am hoping you guys could offer ideas.

Empire: Everything revolves around the cannon and mortar. I guess the plan here is to play defensive, let the enemy come to me and try to pick off as many as I can before the wave hits. If the enemy has war machines, hunt it down with the Knights.

Orcs: I guess this one is fairly easy. Move the whole mob forward. I really don't have many fast options. I should have gotten those Boar Boys versus another regiment of Orcs for my Spear Boys. :/

Dwarves: Keep them close together and around the cannon.

Goblins: I actually have some decent firepower here if they can ever hit anything. Two Bolt Throwers and 20 bows. I guess I might actually be able to provide some covering fire while I try to take one section of the field. The more I look at this list the more I hate the Orcs being a part of it. Down the road I will make this a pure Goblin army. Are fanatics any good?

High Elves: I have 3 units that can shoot, including one on horseback, so I imagine that will involve a lot of my strategy. I also know its not a good idea for spearmen to get flanked. Maybe cover their flanks with the shooty guys.

Skaven: I am really not sure how to use these guys, other than to know they have to get into close combat all at once I guess. I also feel like I do not have enough models for an army like this for 1000 points...

Lizardmen: I love the look of this army but I guess their tactics are just going to involve initially moving in one wave forward.

Wood Elves: I love this army too. I guess this is about as shootiest its going to get for me, so I guess keep my distance and use the Dryads as a 1-2 punch.

Chaos Warriors: These guys seem pretty mobile. I have a chariot, 5 knights, and 10 hounds. I guess I will be trying out a lot of flank attacks.

Bretonnians: So at first I wasn't too impressed with these guys but I really like them now. I think I have a fun list too. I have lots of horses, and 2 units that can shoot. I am really not sure how good the Bretonnian lance is to hit an opposing unit of infantry or calvary though. I guess much of my success is going to come down to how well that unit does.

Beastmen: Another army that has seriously grown on me. Mostly to the variety of the creatures. I think the vocal point are the minotaurs, but I have only one fast unit, and everyone seems rather bland as combat goes. I imagine they will look awesome on the table, but tactics will get a little repetative.

Dark Elves: So with the full list I will have a Commander, Warrior unit, and Knights all armed with Repeater Bows, so I find that exciting. 2 Units of Corsairs and 1 unit of Spearmen seem decent enough to hold the line. Maybe Corsairs flanking the Spearmen. I know this isn't that mobile of an army, and I don't have overwhelming firepower, but at the same time they seem like a pretty well rounded unit.

What do you think?

I got both battalions for fairly cheap (GW cheap anyway) slaves to darkness seemed like the cheapest route to get a lord, more warriors, more Knights, and a chariot.

I play 8th but for what it’s worth I keep my unit of clanrats without spears near the morter with the engineer (who is lvl 1 or 2 mage) to spam gas and warp lightening as my warlord with the spears marches forward with the rat ogres protecting a flank and the flamer protecting the other.

For high elves I can tell you what doesn’t work. Don’t over estimate them. I’ve had my opponent accept a charge of 20 clanrats and the unit get utterly overrun and munched on (or stripped for slavery mwahahaha!) because they thought their slit elves could take it. Swordmasters can hold their own if out numbered by fodder but if ANYTHING steps in to help them they will die. Die horribly. Magic is a great strength but watch the miscast, don’t get cocky.

.

I did pick up Slaves to Darkness and also Lord Heldrath's Chaos Deathtide (below)

The two form the core of my Warriors of Chaos army. The trick was to beg around for those heading to Age of sigmar. Any square bases? Of course I offered up my rounds. I have a large stockpile of square bases to which I added some more, mostly large rectangulars from GW mail order. Sadly they stealth deleted the line before I had enough 50mm square bases or chariot bases. So I am still on the hunt for more.
The best window for purchase has passed, but you can still get what you need if you look carefully. Square bases need not cost a lot, nad at a pinch you can glue together cavalry bases to make bigger bases. I do that for larger AoS miniatures with a scenic base, I cut around the scenic and place it on a custom square base made of smaller bases glued together and carefully puttied. I did this with Reikenor's undead pegasus which I use for my Lahmian vampire lady.
Getting started set have some decent deals. I bought two Nurgle daemon sets plus some 'loose' boxsets and together they made a very good nurgle daemon army. I could afford to do this because I had scrounged 200 25mm bases via swaps and hand overs.

Get your trade face on, because most people have moved to AoS there is a lot of stuff hanging, particularly WHFB bases, about ready for the asking. Just go to your local GW and ask the community openly. I did.

As a rule of thumb generally anchoring a flank on some impassible terrain or a board edge is a good idea and use your fast units to get into the enemies flanks and rear to negate their bonuses. Castling with a solid core of shooting units is also a favoured tactic but beware anything has an AOE attack.

Goblin fanatics are well worth it, one of the most feared units in the game, ignoring armour whilst causing good strength hits is absolutely devastating. Nearly everyone I played 6th against included a unit specifically to draw out fanatics (generally as close to the O&G side of the table as possible).

This is mostly true. There are exceptions:

Beasts of Chaos suddenly got a whole lot cheaper with the new Getting started and rerelease.

Chaos Dwarfs are now cheaply available for the first time since the 90's via Mantic. While other lines are they had a presence in Gw stock, Chaos dwarfs didnt really so there isnt an established look, especially as there is a gulf between the 5th edition white Dwarf presents miniatures, the Hellcannon and the Forgeworld set.

IIRC in 6th you can use various trigger tricks. Teleport something into base contact. As teleportation isn't movement you don't stop 8" away. Any time fanatics suddenly become triggered not through movement they get triggered randomly, so you roll scatter.
Spells that cause units to change allegiance, even momentarily have the same effect.

You do remember right (or I also remember it wrong!), I don't suppose you know how many such spells there were? The only one I can think of is LoS Unseen Lurker (I think) and all other movement spells count as normal or flying moves. were there any race specific extras?

Of course the much more fun way of doing it was to use ghosts who are immune to the fanatics attacks.

How are these guys? One of my disappointments about RH is no Ogre Kingdoms. I really like those guys. But I am not going down the army book route right now.

However, Chaos Dwarves are, and I know these guys who cost me some, and to be honest it looks like they borrow a lot of units other armies have so what is the point? They don't seem to field 100% or even close to it actual Dwarves.

Well as you are going Ravening Hordes you have the army covered. There was no further cover until 8th, though the faction is also in 9th Age.

You get basic melee with hammer and shield or halberds and you have blunderbuss armed units. Then you have centaurs. Then lots of artillery and greenskin slave units. Mantic has you covered for most if not all of that, and the models look OK. The alternate is Forgeworld, which costs a whole lot more. Thing is I prefer the look of the Mantic ones, though Forgeworld artillery looks very nice.

Nice thing about them is that you dont need many. You have a dwarf army wich means expensive sturdy infantry and extremely effective artillery. Then you add heavy cavalry, and magic, two things the dwarves lack and are otherwise expensive, then upgrade the artillery to extra nasty
Chaos Dwarf armies are small you could fill a 1000pt Chaos Dwarf army from Mantic for very little money, an you can also recycle your greenskin models as slaves. They were an also-ran faction even by the time Ravening Hordes was released, but you can take half the army from an existing one, and the other half is of elite units that are small in number and very expensive. You should be able to add Chaos Dwarfs to your faction list for only a little expenditure, though they would need to share assets with your orc and or goblin armies.

If I remember correctly the older 6th Ed plastic Dwarves were modular enough that Marauder parts could be used on them, therefore making it easy to do up some plastics on the cheap. There was also some plastic Chaos Dwarf monopose, if memory serves.

REJOICE!

My Dark Elf Battalion has arrived. I have to be honest I wasn't exactly sure what was included sprue-wise, and I had actually bought some bits to make up my own Dreadlord-like guy, and I was afraid I was wasting money on parts I was already getting and I am happy to announce that I did not. I am using a Bleaksword, I think one of their champions's shields, and what I think is a Black Guard head. Anyway, with the leftover body parts from the Battalion set I should be able to make a cool commander.

Also, I am really impressed with the Dark Elf Cold One Knights and especially the Corsairs. I have to be honest I wasn't that impressed with the Corsairs looking at them online, but I love the models and option parts. Especially the octopus and sea dragon banner things. I like these guys so much I decided to rework my army lists to give one 10 man unit an additional hand weapon, and the other repeater crossbows! So I have a really shooty warhammer army which is very different than most of the others. I really didn't want duplicates of the same units so I am stoked I was able to do all this.

Really excited to assemble these guys. These guys might be in my top 3 armies to be honest. Very impressed.

Which battalion set did you get? Can you link and image to the box.

There is good info on 1d4chan for you here:
https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer/Tactics/8th_Edition/Dark_Elves

Here is the directly relevant section, excuse the language:

Buying Your Army
The army is expensive as feth. If you buy a Cauldron of Blood/Bloodwrack Shrine, always make the Cauldron of Blood. You get Hellebrone (a special character), the Death Hag (a Hero), the Bloodwrack Medusa (a monstrous beast) and the Cauldron. Spearmen and Crossbowmen got dearer, so be careful with core units. Also, Witch Elves, Executioners and Black Guard became WAY overpriced because of the excuse that it's a double kit, since they're plastic models that cost as much as they did when made of metal.

Cold One Knights are still fairly reasonably priced, and the Hydra got cheaper while also gaining the option of making the Kharibdyss. Bolt Throwers are as expensive as they ever were, but still a good unit.

To save money with a Dark Elves army, you'll have to get creative.

Buy some basic High Elf models from GW (or Mantic--but only if you like owning ugly ass minis), remove their more High Elven bits and replace them with Dark Elf bits or spikes. Then paint them in Dark Elf colors and in the fluff pass them off as defectors from Ulthuan (or Athel Loren) gone over to Naggaroth (For example; Spearmen become Dreadspears, Glade Riders become Dark Riders).

Corsairs are good for conversions and can be used to make other units.

For example, take a box of Corsairs (using Aus prices that's $55). Take two away and use them to buff an existing Corsair unit. As for the remaining 8, take 5 Corsairs and with some modeling putty and tools convert 5 of them into Shades. Take the Standard Bearer and give him the same treatment, he becomes a BSB Master. Another Corsair can become either a Master on foot, a Dreadlord on foot or a Fleetmaster. The final Corsair, with the same method, can be converted into an Assassin. Buying GW's Shades, two Masters and an Assassin model would cost $125, but with this idea you save $70! (NOTE: IF you're already into conversions you won't have to worry about buying modeling putty or tools, and get them from crafting stores, not GW). Since Warhammer is more expensive with Aus prices, imagine how much cheaper this method would be for gamers in the US or UK (prices in other parts of the world vary but fall between these price ranges).
Alternate take, buy some dark eldar. They are currently one of the cheapest armies of 40k and they have great kits that you can convert with relative ease.

Assing its the modern sculpts:
Now for Ravening hordes I highly recommend you make City Guard, it works better with the low model count armies you have. I suggest making one unit of twenty front rank crossbows, rear rank spears. The command group count as crossbowmen. i had a 5th edition Dark elf army and relied on City Guard as my core as they were efficient in two ranks. You could make two units of ten city guard but the repeating command groups will look odd, you only have two crossbows in the front rank, but it is certainly viable.

As for the Corsairs have two units of ten one with extra hand weapons, one with crossbows. I highly recommend you take the above advice but do so with another box of Corsairs. I find Corsairs to be the easiest Dark Elf models to obtain, ebay is flooded with them and independent stockists still have some. As you want the cloaks for your characters, and shades are a good idea its a good buy. Though you could have one unit of fifteen to eighteen Corsairs and use the remainder as stock for character conversions. If so I recommend taking the repeater pistols as it adds to viability, in Ravening hordes they count as full crossbows.

Otherwise I recommend Dark Eldar wyches as a base for Shades.

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Dark-Eldar-Wyches

I recommend a box of Dark Riders

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Dark-Riders-2018
