So I bought a bunch of used models and picked up some decal sheets. I wanted to keep then all the same, but only get 10 per sheet, which is gonna mean a lot of decals for lasguns, cmd sq, he team and specials

Since the Guard keeps their division separate I was thinking of making each type a separate unit per say.

All my lasgun and sgt will have the same 501st and space Heavy weapons will be another number and the diamond Special weapons will be another number and the skull Tempestus will be another number and the clubs or hearts from decals I got online. Cmd squads will be 7skull7 and eagles

I don't want to use the cadians gare decals.

The idea is each type of unit has a specific emblem and company assigned to it.

Got the idea a bit from the 101 airborne in ww2 as each regiment had a different suit. Now since this is supposed to be one regiment.

I wanted to make it the 777th "Triple luck, we're fethed." Or "thrice lucked thrice fethed." Are the 3 digit numbers, battalion, company, platoon? Etc....

Lastly, I was going to try and get the 777 emblem or number on everyone, maybe on the helmets, or back plate. Thoughts on emblems or markings and where to out them to unify the entire army?

I think the three digit numbers are company, platoon, squad.

Personally I use the 2nd edition markings; Company and platoon are each represented by a colour, so Red Company, Blue Platoon is represented by a roundel that's half red, half blue (IIRC, company on the left, platoon on the right). Squad is a number on top of that roundel ("C" for platoon command squads. At that time, Company command squads weren't represented in the army list, so I decided to mark them with a "C" over a single-colour roundel, and auxiliary squads such as heavy and special weapon squads have the number in yellow rather than white). All that goes on the left shoulder - or anywhere else handy; some studio Catachans had it on their machete scabbards.

The Elysian Drop Troops use a similar numbering system to the Cadians, IIRC, but also use helmet stripes to denote sergeants and officers, rather like Space Marines. Officers, IIRC, also have rank markings (skull, skull and wreath, etc) on their right shoulder. It's all in Imperial Armour vol 3 or vol 8.

Ultimately, though, as with everything else in 40k, the answer is "it depends"; Not every regiment will use the same form of markings.

Oh, and the Imperial Guard 7th regiment "Lucky Sevens" is already a thing

Thanks, I don't know if I am going to do all the colors. Damn about the 7th. Is that just the 7th, or is it 777?

That's not how guard units are typically divided OP. Typically an infantry unit would all be from the same regiment. That's your officers, NCO's, riflemen, special weapons, and heavy weapons. In fact special and heavy weapons are integrated into each platoon. You'll have line squads, special squads, and heavy squads, with some members of the special and heavy weapon squads being attached to rifle squads to up their firepower.

Where regiment difference would come in would be a mixed force. Let's say you have an infantry unit, a tank unit, a sentinel unit, and an artillery unit. That would likely be 4 different regiments combined into a makeshift combat group. The codex actually goes pretty in depth on this. This essentially means that your infantry would all likely have the same markings.

As for ideas on markings, you can custom print decals of your own design. Other ideas would be to just adopt a symbol for your regiment and not worry about numbers. You'll want something simple, remember you're going to be painting it a lotm

To be fair, that "7th regiment" is from nigh-on 30 years ago. Hardly anyone will recognise it, and those that do will mostly understand changing things to suit your own background. That's back from before the Guard regiments were described as being "local" - that's the 7th Imperial Guard regiment, not the 7th <planet umpty-something> regiment.. Nowadays you can have the 777th Cadian, the 777th Mordian, 777th Catachan, etc (and possibly the 777th Catachan Light Infantry, 7th Catachan Armoured, etc, if you want).

If you want to mix things up, regiments reduced by casualties are often combined (the 597th Valhallan are made up of the remnants of the 301st assault regiment and 296th garrison regiment), so you might have troopers in the same company (or even platoon or squad) with different unit markings for a while.

Just out of interest, do the guard troop not have a special and heavy weapon anymore?

Most pics now I have seen they have just lasguns and a separate heavy weapon team

They can - mine all do because I got the army in 2nd edition - but it’s probably not the best way of doing it.

Its kind of muddy. Some sources have units with integrated support weapons, while others have dedicated squads in each platoons with the weapons concentrated in small sections while line squads only have Las rifles.

I think the answer is basically just "it depends". Since the codex allows you to do both at the same time, odds are any given unit could be doing one or both of these approaches. Sometimes you hear of the SWS's and HWS's being split up to be attached to rifle squads as well to augment an infantry squads firepower.

Basically go with whatever works for you. I tend to do both in most lists.

Having the same number on troops and heavy weapons makes it easy to field them as imbedded and heavy weapon in a squad or breaking it out to join three more as a Heavy Weapon Team.

It really does not matter what the canon says as you are creating your regiment and can design the history and rational for the markings however you like...it is a big universe.

Cheers,

Might be useful to grab yourself a load of 28mm WWII transfers.

Put a card suit on one shoulder for each platoon inside a differently coloured square to denote each squad.
And put ranks on the other shoulder or a regimental number from the Guard sheet.

yeah i picked up some of the ww2 transfers. Decided to go with 501st on all infantry and then use differnet symbols for each role (lasgun, spec weapons, HW.)
