On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Just an idea for a thread - does anyone else have some retro-themed projects on the go?

The recent spate of old classics being revisited by GW has really brought memories of some of those games back for me and I've found myself digging through old White Dwarf mags and venturing into the attic, seeing what treasures were buried there (I've just rescued a copy of 1st edition Space Hulk, and I've thanked the teenage me for not wrecking it and keeping most of the components in place, and also not taking it to a car-boot sale!)

So I've now found myself getting some of the old metal terminators of t'bay and painting them up. I've mooted playing a Blood Bowl league with a couple of mates, incredibly again a couple of us have still got the old 3rd edition board and dugouts etc.

I've been into Epic for some time now but have to say am really enjoying re-visiting some of the old minis and games. Does anyone else have any classic game projects on the go or are in the process of giving some old minis a much-needed repaint? Guess this would also be a good time to say if you have never stopped playing 40k second edition!

Really been thinking of playing some 2nd edition games. Regardless of some people's bad experiences, a 2nd edition game of 1500-2000 points between two good friends who aren't trying to play cutthroat can lead to some really fun gameplay.

I've even been thinking of ditching things like unit cohesion, and purchase models individually in games of maybe 250 points. Would give a really fun (original) Necromunda-scale feel, but between the major players of 40k, rather than gangs, considering as both rulesets share their core rules.

This is not a question of edition but of the players mindset

Bloody ton. Got my 1st edition metal and plastic arms imperial guard on the go, my large Epic collection not to mention that the original Warhammer Quest is the game I most play these days. Also got a bunch of Fantasy models and am idly working towards being able to play 4th Edition fantasy with them.

I still dabble in Inquisitor, write up characters but have yet to make any models to represent them.

Prior to taking a 40k break when 6th rolled out, I was converting a retro-inspired scout sm army.
Influenced by the aesthetics style of the RT-3rd edition models, 80s scifi in general, but with modern proportion and tall-scaling.
Since I don't see myself buying new editions, might as well finish them up.

I’ll at some point be embarking on a project to get my 2nd edition Blood Angels re-assembled and painted. They’re missing a fair few bits, so may have to get modern replacements from my bits box.

By the time I'm done I should have 50 or so 2nd edition Arbites as well as Specialist Games enforcers and plastic conversions.

I always wanted an Arbites army so um, now I'm getting one.

Oh and last year's obession of Space Fleet ships, which included building some battleships out of the old plastics and then a complete Chaos Opfor.

I'm technically not done since I still have a few old Firestorms to paint.

Bloody hell - well that explains where all of those old Arbites went!

Love the old Spacefleet ships, they've got a real style. Did you get any of the Vanguard tribute minis in the end?

That's one of my favourite memories from that edition too.

I've been looking back at some battle reports from that game and stunned how small 2000pt armies were. I suppose then it allowed that kind of depth in the rules without the game taking days to play (although I seem to remember close combat took ages, even though you had the possibility of marine captains running in and rolling snake-eyes and getting bopped by a lowly trooper)

This is a pic from a WD, think it may have been the edition that came out alongside 2nd ed launch?
Spoiler:

Yes I suppose, like all editions of the game, it's been most fun when players don't try and min-max. There were some really, really dirty combinations of units back then. The squad of Wolf Guard terminators (when terminators were really bad-ass) all with assault cannons and cyclone missile launchers springs to mind. Or the classic polymorphed assassin, that always had ludicrous wargear despite it representing just an eldar guardian or something..

That's pretty impressive!

Waiting now for someone that says they have some old Slann army that's been on the bench since before then..

That particular article is from 1st edition - the battle report features them going up against Craftworld Eldar. The same army was used (well, some of it, with the then brand-new "angry washing machine" Dreadnought model added) in one of the first 2nd edition Battle reports - the one which featured Tycho being defeated by an Ork weirdboy. In that report, no ork unit had more than ten models.

Annoyingly I seem to have lost a few of the minis though.

After an accidental alcohol-infused purchase of a 2nd Ed box set last year, we've decided to get the little chaps painted up and run the Armageddon mini campaign that came with the 2nd Ed box set - basically Christmas 1993 revisited.

Ah yes - I remember that now. Didn't they write the death of Tycho in that battle report into the history of the character in future Blood Angels codecies?
Also remember the exploits of Scumbo the Gretchin and his foolhardy solo charge at the marines

Does finally getting around to painting my Delaque from years ago count - a guy at my club is running a necro league, so I exhumed these guys from my shed of shame.

These are my Scum-rats. Shiv is from the fanatic days, afaik (separate hands) and the heavy stubber guy was done using an old body, cadian arms, flamer and a heavy stubber off a Chimera back in the 4th ed days.

Yes, quite a lot of the background has come from battle reports; Tycho's weirdboy-induced stroke, Yarrick being captured by Ghazgkull on Golgotha and the Ultramarines and Eldar alliance on Ichar IV to break Hive Fleet Leviathan.

Yeah, introduced my boys to Hero Quest with my brother a few weeks back. Went extremely well! I've been looking at buying my own copy, but the ones that come up on ebay just end up being that bit too expensive, given that I already have access to my brother's copy... Keep hoping to stumble on to a charity shop bargain one day...

If you think the basic game is expensive, for pity's sake don't look up the various expansions! I have been searching for a copy of 'Against The Ogre Horde' for some time but eBay prices are astronomical.

Yeah... Fortunately my brother still has his copy of the original game plus Kellar's Keep and Return Of The Witch Lord. I didn't even know there were more expansions than that until recently. Staggered at the prices that the ogre set and the wizard set go for...

We'll find out soon enough eh.

I don't really do anything else these days, about my only concessions to modernity are the new versions of Specialist Games and the Heresy.

I'm a bit less enthused by the retro miniatures than many are(not least because of the often ludicrous prices they can now command), but I enjoy trying to "update" the classic aesthetics with modern miniatures, and my conception of the background for GW games tends to be a mashup of the 2nd/5th through 4th/6th eras of 40K/WHFB.

I've been struggling to prevent myself starting a Kill Team of truescale Ultramarines painted in the classic primary colours look of 2nd.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

"Your society's broken, so who should we blame? Should we blame the rich, powerful people who caused it? No, lets blame the people with no power and no money and those immigrants who don't even have the vote. Yea, it must be their fething fault." - Iain M Banks
-----
"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

Great idea for a thread!

I've been working on retro-themed stuff for the past year or so with my Alien Wars project, indulging myself in the bits of 40k I loved when I first got into it.

The theme I've been using for all of it is essentially 'If current model technology was around when Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader was released, what would the armies have looked like?'

So, we've got Thrugg Bullneck's ork raiders:

...A Blood Angels army that's are an affectionate update of the one you posted above, Pacific, from WD139.

...and various aliens, like the Saharduin:

...and squats:

+++

It's proving to be a really enjoyable project, and I've got lots more on the workbench for it

+++

The project is a shared one, so if anyone likes the looks of the Alien Wars, why not join in? There are some great models being produced. Here's a selection from other hobbyists:
