The rules say the sargent can take a weapon from the ranged weapon list. Any weapon from that list?

He can take a Bolt Pistol, Bolt Gun, Las Pistol, or Plasma Pistol. Those are his only options.

The weapon lists are at the front of the rules section, right before the datasheets.

Your sergeant can't take a volcano cannon.

Others have answered correctly but for clarity, those lists are at the bottom of page 85 of the codex.
