One of my buddies from when I was in the Army started posting about this.

Man, I am happy to live in one of the most geologically stable places on Earth. Nothing like a winter earthquake.

Doesn't sound like much loss of life, thankfully.

Just heard about this. Hopefully they are up to date with building codes and damage is limited.

May our members in Alaska come thru this with their banners held high.

It was an exciting morning. Thankfully so far there have been no reports of deaths or serious injuries.

I haven't had a chance to go home and check on the state of my minis yet. During the last big earthquake near me (7.9 about fifteen years ago I think?) most of my army ended up smashed. A few people in local FB gaming groups have been posting pictures of their models scattered everywhere. (Thankfully that's a small problem in the grand scheme of things.)

How deep was the quake? None of the reports I have read said they have just stated the magnitude (which tend to be irrelevant without depth).
Stay safe mate.

Estimates I've seen are around 7 miles north of Anchorage and around 20-25 miles deep.

Distance definitely makes a big difference. Most of the big earthquakes we get in Alaska are pretty far away from populated areas.

Pretty shallow, so goes to show the resiliency of our building requirements that it wasn't a total disaster.

I experienced a 7.0 when I lived in Japan, about 20 miles to the south of where I lived. One of the few moments of my life where I was actually afraid for my life (in a 7th floor condo at the time). Those things are no freaking joke.

That must be so terrifying. The heaviest earthquake I ever experienced was 3.4. That was already quite unsettling because the building I was in started moving and creaking a bit, but that was all. I can't even begin to imagine what an actual heavy earthquake must be like. Especially if you are on the upper floor of a building...
I hope all Alaskans are safe and don't get suffer too much damage to their buildings and other stuff.

That's not impossible. It's a logarithmic scale so a 5th magnitude earthquake is approx. a hundred times weaker than a 7th magnitude earthquake.

"Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. " - V

That's not only not impossible but entirely likely. Depending upon depth and distance a 5-6 wouldn't wake me up, and a 7 might have knocked my house down or not even bothered the cat.
Have a look at our recent earthquake map;

I live in Wellington which is at the southern most point of the northen island and I noticed none of this.

Whoops, I totally wasn't clear. Iron Captain above me mentioned being through a 3.4, I live in California so my response was effectively "oh man you have it good, we get so many that magnitude 5 isn't even worth noting."

It came up in a news story, that I cant find now of course, that a guy was interviewed who was taking a bath when it hit and the waves ended up throwing him from the tub once it was a bit into the quake. I heard something similar about a guy who was killed in the LA quake because his waterbed ended up tossing him out his window (this was word of mouth so no idea if true).

I live in Washington State and the topic of "The Big One" comes up on the news here pretty much weekly. Working in a high rise building in downtown Seattle I am not sure how I feel about this, but short of moving somewhere else there really isn't much that can be done about it (other than having a good prep kit and such of course).

I know California is due for a big earthquake sometime in the next 50 years or so. Which is pinpoint accuracy by geologic standards.

As a funny aside I was working on the fifth floor of a building in town when we had a sizeable quake a couple of years back, standard practice is to hide oneself braced under a table or in a doorway or similar. One of my colleagues who is a notorious smart ass started haranguing everyone who did so as in his view it was pointless to hide under a table as it wouldn't save anyone from the building collapsing. So he sat in his chair being all smug and superior, when a light fitting in the ceiling gave way and sconned him. Surprisingly he hasnt been such a smart ass since.

I'm hoping therecs no body count. I imagine a quake in alakska can be damn serious as even if no one is killed, the disruption of power and broken windows could result in cold related deaths.

Is this why you can't buy waterbeds in the states anymore?

Man I used to love my old waterbed. It was always toasty warm in winter time.
