I own the Sector Munitorum and Sector Mechanicus Kill Zones and a starter box, still I decided to build a custom kill zone - not out of necessity, but out of fun.
The idea is to build something Cathedral like. The outer walls shall be fixed and some scatter-stuff shall be used to add some variety.
The obvious choice would have been to choose the GW-walls. But removing mould lines of 50 parts and painting all that detail made me cringe.
So I designed some simple walls in the same style and printed them.
This is the arrangement of most of the outer walls:

The Rose window will be mounted in the back wall.
The main-entrance is missing.

Tall structures are the hallmark of a cathedral, but I decided to have low structures only for reasons of playability.

I'll paint the walls next, while designing the main entrance.
After that the "foundation" and the floor will be done.
Last not least the scatter stuff like columns, wall fragments etc. will follow.

Nice job on the design of those walls. I'm also making my own kill zone so I totally understand the impulse. Are you planning on including some LOS blocking terrain or variation in elevation?

There will be no different levels of elevation in the fixed parts.

I will add a pulpit and some steps in a tower which will add some "high points", but I do not plan to have a real second level like in the Sector Mechanicus.

It's planned that I will do an "insert" later that will add a gallery, but that's far in the future.

There will be no fixed feature that blocks LOS completely.
Having said that, you might still get areas that can't be looked into from certain angles.
Also scatter material will restrict/block LOS further.

In our experience height levels and LOS blocking terrain, can shift game balance immensely - which might be a good or a bad thing.
So I prefer to keep both out of the fixed parts of the kill zone and add them with scatter (read non fixed) terrain if needed.

Some cool ideas there - a pulpit has great potential. I'm making my board to be totally impermanent, but each piece will have some LOS blocking and at least a second level if not a third. Thanks for sharing, it's interesting to see different approaches and think about how they affect gameplay.

Do you have a theme for your board ?

Yeah, it's very heavily influenced by Necromunda or industrial style terrain. The crossmember bulkhead is my main visual element and everything has multiple levels. Whatever the facility is it's relatively intact instead of being battle damaged or ruined.

The outer walls are printed and have gotten their first coat of paint.

It looks like it is going to be a visually impressive board/table for Kill Team and would probably be an excellent keystone piece for regular 40k.

One question though? Do you plan on providing some cover or something for that open area around the alter? Seems pretty open to me and a tough area to fight from for that player. I think even scatter terrain would do, but as shown, seems like a hard place to have to fight.

There will be lots of scatter terrain.

Don't know. Haven't really thought about it and will not think about it before the project is finished.

Started on the floors.

It's photographed with flash, so the contrast looks extra hard.

Those floors are really starting to tie it all together, it's looking great. I finished building my industrial board and I have to confess that I'm kind of copying you by building a cathedral board now, though mine is built from chipboard and foam core and the apse and front square shapes on either side of the entry are raised platforms.

Any pictures from Industrial and Cathedral ?

I'm at work right now but I can take some pictures later. I did a rush job on painting the industrial board because I needed it to be ready for game night this weekend, and the cathedral is just bare-bones structures while I wait ti layer up the details in foam board.

Here's my industrial board, I need to add some texture to the bases and board itself and paint it in a more detailed manner. You can see the start of the Cathedral as well but like I said it's very bare bones right now.

Cool.
I love the rust like color.

What material did you choose for the gratings ?

I used plastic embroidery canvas, otherwise known as "granny grate". Almost everything else is made out of one type of styrene or another.

Finished the floor files.
Haven't glued them or the walls or columns together.
Wherever ground shines through I just painted it, but on the Rosette-tile I used texture paint.
So I'm thinking redoing all patches of ground with texture paint.
Also not sure what to do with the "blank" outside area.

Anyway here we are

P.S.
I plan to add some stained glas to the Rosette

Again, looking pretty sweet. Do you want to go for an "in the middle of a city" feel or is it out in the country somewhere? I think more tiled flooring on the outside would look good, but so would standard gravel and grass.

After I added some scatter terrain (altar, pulpit, pieces of walls and columns), the board is ready to be used.
A good time for a break.

What's left is retouching the paint job, some "stuff" like a tabanakel and something to put on the altar, imperial regalia, a poster or two.
But my attention span regarding this project jut ran out. So this will be done later.

Saw this on Reddit and loved it there, too. I like all the WIP pics and will go thru them all in more depth later.

Well done!

Yes, very well done. That pulpit came out great! Looks like a fun board, for sure.

Man that looks awesome. Be a great centerpiece for 40k battles as well!
