Krieg! What a hole...

Haven't seen much discussion going about this https://www.warhammer-community.com/2018/12/04/4th-dec-chapter-approved-2018-open-playgw-homepage-post-1/?fbclid=IwAR2ZxHe9Vj2BQPthJAFpsDaArMmeWzLeRd4F6sCThVGqgUFuIRL54QqrwYQ#utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=Facebook&utm_campaign=40K&utm_content=40KChapterApprovedDec4

Not the Ork looting stuff, which we knew about, but the make-your-own guy kinda stuff, wonder how flexible it is.

I think it sounds really cool, but sadly I'm pretty sure since it's lumped in Open Play it will rarely if ever see the light of day because it's not Matched Play. I'm hopeful that the character stuff sees play in alternate scenarios (character battle events are fairly common) but I'm afraid it will just get the usual "could be unbalanced, don't want to bother" response from the community at large.

Im gonna use the custom character stuff for garagehammer with my buddies for sure, but it is largely useless with random opponents.

Putting it in open play makes sense, custom crafting can be al kinds of nightmares to balance for a game system like 40K and that's before we even get near WYSIWYG modelling. I recall one of the earlier Tyranid codex had the option to use the base rules or you could totally custom "evolve" each unit. Give gaunts synapse leaders; let warriors take as many heavy weapons per unit as they wanted etc... You could really change things up.

Thing is it was hard for newbies to work with so much variety of choice whilst experienced people could abuse it like mad and come out with some insane armies.

So yes put it in open play, if it takes hold it might be reviewed in that context try and balance it for matched play

I suppose if they add points costs in I could convince my club to use it with matched play.

they don't actually hate open-play style rules; what would be the big hindrance would be the ease of translating it over into points-play 40k.

I guess we'll take those pages as inspiration for our own characters. In my gaming group nearly everybody has created their own characters for some of the 3rd party minis or conversions. This will be handy.

Hopefully these rules will let me properly represent my 30k Warsmith with a servo-arm on the tabletop with the 8th edition Marine codex.

Probably not. But I can hope.

Most of the games I play outside of league are open play, so it can theoretically see play... but, if it doesn't have points, it's unlikely to. We still use points to set up our armies.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Yes, freely customisable characters... as long as you don't want to equip them with anything that doesn't come in the kit. This is not the sort of customisation I want, I just want to be able to freely give my Primaris characters gear from the Space Marine armoury.

Yep, I'd be far more enthused with this (though admittedly it's shockingly easy to create your own characters already...) if the Land Raider article hadn't been such a massive fething farce.

"Oh look, you can swap bits between the existing Land Raider kits...how clever!"

Really fething lazy stuff there, GW. I suspect this will be the same. However, we have some threads going on custom characters and they're cake to make. My local group plays narrative using matched play rules and we're fine with characters being created - if they're too powerful we dial them back, etc. The easiest route is to mimic another datasheet, swap some weapons/rules and apply a small cost tax for the creation.

Custom characters will be as common as custom land raiders.. i.e never

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.

To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

While I can't see it coming up in normal games, what I've seen of the options might be a really cool addition to campaigns. Something like:

Win a game - one of your characters gets a trait.

Could be pretty cool!

Well if you're playing with your buddies, why not take one custom charac each or maybe just paying the base cost of the char, and build the rest of your armies as usual ?
