Subject: 32mm bases can go three ranks deep in combat
So, I was CADing up some movement trays when I had an idea and took a measurement. 32mm bases can go three ranks deep, by a couple mm, but they can. This was a big deal when the Ork codex dropped and everyone thought that boyz caught a huge combat nerf. They may still have issues going length wise, but they still can get three ranks, which is pretty huge.
Image is of 33mm for clearance on movement trays, and they still make it by a mm.
Edit: Imgur not work here?

I thought this was a well known thing? Math is math. 1" doesn't change. I suppose if you were unaware, this is a good way to make the most of a "barely getting there" charge? Because of the spaces left, you're not gaining anything if you had the ability to pile in nut-to-butt as normal.

But as already mentioned, 32mm bases can reach 4 ranks deep if staggered due to the within 1" of a friendly model within 1" rule and always have in 8th.

Do note; it'll often still be possible to go 4 ranks deep like this because your opponent doesn't have a perfectly flat front rank, but rather a bumpy and/or curved one. This method of going 4-deep will only work if your opponent's base is just at being within this point. As such, I think 3 ranks deep is really, honestly, the best you can hope to do, and even that will be challenging. Their intention has been to make it 2 ranks deep, but that "ranks" are meaningless in this edition, and 1" is an easy cut-off. Changing the sizes of the bases does help them both look cool, and serves this function well!

This is all fine and dandy on paper. In any normal sitiation this is going to fall apart quick when you realize your opponent isn't giving you these magical perfectly straight lines to charge.

This. Theoryhammer is one thing but when the enemy is half an inch to the left and you've got a barricade or piece of terrain in the middle it changes everything.
"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.
To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."
