I can't believe there's no thread for this!

It released today, and I think it's one of those games that 90% of Switch owners will end up getting at some point. Every character, every stage ever used in the series, plus a greatly improved single player / campaign mode.

I've only gotten to try it today but it looks like everything I'd hoped it would be . Who else is playing this (or asking for it for the holidays / etc)?

Edit: Found a thread from six months ago, but we might as well start fresh at this point!

I have to wait about a week. Throwing a Christmas party and having rent due in the same week kind of strapped me. I got a buddy that has been streaming it though. Been watching him off and on.

I am buying a Switch specifically for this bad boy. I mean, I want other games but this is what is forcing me to go out and get it.

I usually like playing heavies and King K. Rool already looks amazing to me. Haven't seen a lot of Dedede or Bowser yet, my Sm4sh mains, but from the small clips I have seen they look really good.

I am excite.

They finally added a Belmont to the roster! I always thought a Belmont would make for a perfect smash bros character.

My other favorite choice for a new character that has never been made is Geno from Super Mario RPG. The star road spirit animating a doll with a canon arm. He would also have perfect moves for a smash bros dude, be a nice throw back to an earlier nintendo game, AND the star item that rocks back and forth and then smashes into somebody is basically one of his moves from the mario rpg game.

Heres hoping Geno shows up in a dlc or future game some day.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

As much as I want to see Geno in this, I doubt Square would give him up in place of other characters to promote their franchises.

They are kinda terrible about that. Personally, I am hoping to see Sora come in here, since KH3 is very very soon. But I don't think Disney would allow that.

I am pretty pessimistic about new characters. You cannot trust any leaks out there. Pffft, the grinch!

Simon is a great addition, as well as Richter! They look like a ton of fun. Lots of range.

Would Square even have the rights? It is Super Mario RPG. I doubt Nintendo gave Square any rights instead of just making them a developer for a cut of profits.

Having just gotten back into playing this, I'm having a hard time performing a tilt attack vs a smash attack. I.e. just pushing the stick right, versus slamming it to the right.

For tilt attacks, am I right that literally the only way to perform them is to move the stick slower? Or can you move it just as fast, but not as far?

Doing things slowly in this game seems like a bad idea . For me so far, smashes are easy, tilts are hard...

Oh yeah they do. Square owns a piece of every original character in that game. That is why Smithy was never really reused as a bad guy. Also why we never see Mallow and rarely Geno.

They may not own them outright, but they own enough to be able to say yay or nay on his inclusion. It sucks. Personally, Chrono and Sora are my picks for Square. But that will never happen.

RiTides, are you talking about the cstick?

Just the normal stick. I'm using Samus, so tilt + B shoots a homing missile, and smash + B shoots a fast missile. In other words:

Homing Missile
+

Fast Missile
Smash +

From this link (slightly out of date, but for the most part the moves are the same for this character):
https://strategywiki.org/wiki/Super_Smash_Bros._Brawl/Samus

When I do this, I normally get the fast missile, and have trouble getting the homing missile. So how do you reliably tilt, not smash, the joystick?

Edit: I found this explanation - will try not moving the stick the whole way over and see if that makes it more reliable:
A tilt is when you slightly move the stick over and then push A. A smash is when you move the stick all the way over and push A at the same time. Tilts are usually faster but weaker while smashes are generally slower but stronger.

Have you guys seen the drama about the quality (or lack of it, depending on who is posting) of the online service?

Believe me, there is some Serious drama about this

I personally have found that it depends on the game, but some games definitely are almost unplayable. It's surprising, because I've never had an issue with Splatoon at all, and I would've thought that would be more challenging from an online-gaming perspective.

Honestly, it doesn't surprise me at all. Nintendo are notoriously bad at their online services.

Not having a "For Glory" mode like in Sm4sh is making me real sad. :(

The worst part is that Nintendo has jumped onto the "pay for online services" bandwagon that Microsoft started, so they have even less of an excuse for their crappy multiplayer.

Got all the characters unlocked

You can use this method to get them faster:

Start a custom game with a 20 minute timer (or do this twice with 10 minute timers so it's not so long) with one stock each using you and a fake second player. Then just sprint back and forth the whole time, and eliminate the other player to win at the end. I found the long "Bridge of Eldin" level perfect for this.

Now you've filled up your distance/activity meter, and should get a challenger. After playing the challenger, hit the Home button, close the software, and restart the game. Play a single stock match and eliminate yourself immediately by jumping off the side. Now you'll get a new challenger.

Continually close the software, lose a single stock match, and beat a new challenger. Any that you lose to can be replayed in an area called "Challenger's Approach" under Games and More, using a glowing door that appears after you've played 10 or so minutes without closing the software. So, you can wait and replay any you failed all together at the end

Wow, this really worked for me on reducing lag!

https://gamerant.com/super-smash-bros-ultimate-reduce-online-lag/

The method for changing MTU values on Switch is as follows:

Access “System Settings” from the Switch home screen
Select “Internet”
Select “Internet Settings”
Select the network being used
Select “Change Settings”
Select “MTU,” and change the value to 1,500

Apparently the change only applies to that one connection, though, so if you use multiple different connections you'd have to do it for each.

But it's a lifesaver so far - won my next several games after doing this and just felt like the lag is fairer (and also much less for the most part - but if it does show up, it seems to be more consistent and predictable).

Might get a switch for my birthday next month. Or at least half the cost for a switch, which is close enough. If so, this'll be what I get. Looking forward to the new characters and the features like smash meter.

It's out now!

Melissia, it might be worth saving that till the summer if you can, since rumor is a new version of the Switch will be out then.

Really loved the single player mode. The creative mix of abilities to recreate so many classic characters was really fun.

Played a bit on my nephews' switch a few days ago, and I gotta say... I'm rusty as fraaaaaaaaaaak. It's gonna take a while once I start playing properly to actually get good at it.

I've become a bit of a big-red-button-masher, and you really can't play competitively while relying on specials that much...
