I am currently working on a converted Rohirrim army.

Can anyone recommend some decent suppliers of dark age cavalry models? (preferably Saxon or Viking styled with round shields)

The latter also available from Gripping Beast under their swordpoint range.

Thanks for the suggestion but the horses seem a bit small for their riders, and I'm also not to big a fan of metal miniatures either.

In plastic heroic proportions I think you are stuck with GW or trying to fudge larger scale horses with smaller riders.

Gripping Beast Dark Age cavalry kit bashed with Gripping Beast Anglo Saxons?

Capes are hard to come by unless you get some Fireforge kits though.

The Gripping Beast cav should be perfectly fine for converted Rohirrim.

These are the GB unarmored Dark Age cav with Conquest Games' Norman heads.

You can see some other conversions here:

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=105912.0

They are slightly smaller than Conquest's stuff, but look perfectly fine in units of their own or standing next to all my other Conquest/Perry/GB/Artizan/Warlord/Footsore/et al figs.

Remember, most dark age cavalry aren't riding destriers. Rohan, in particular, wouldn't be riding them around the countryside. Even midieval knights didn't do that. They had smaller riding palfreys and only rode the destrier into battle or during training. The Rohirrim, which are Vikings meet Steppe Tribes would have ridden smaller and more sturdy animals to roam the plains and hills.

Thats because they're historically accurate for the time period. Horses prior to the late middle ages were a bit smaller than the ones we have today. Go further back to the Bronze age and you couldn't actually ride horses at all, hence why chariots were all the rage.

Conquest Games' Norman Knights are decent for early period mailed knights and are competitively priced. Plastic and no heroic proportions. I built my Saga army using these models and they're excellent value

Great looking figures, I like the color variety of your horses.

The Icelandic Horse (some call it a pony) is a great example of the type of horse ridden back then. Sturdy, can go forever, great little horses. Of course I may be a bit biased since my wife and I have several.
