Building an army for my son who just got the Start collecting! Necrons pack, and a couple of other boxes that looked cool. Although obviously I've just learned that the points have changed which may allow me to get more in. They're being painted as Nekthyst, so it' will be a random Dynastic code.

Overlord (staff and orb). 129
Lord (staff and orb). 118
5x Lychguard (D Shield and Hypersword) 170
5x Deathmark 95
10x Warriors 120
3x Canoptek wraith (claws and TD Beamer). 207
Annihilation barge (gauss cannon + twin tessla destructor) 153

Total 992

Help needed as I (and he) haven't played necrons before!

Also, how would you bulk this army out to 2000 points and include a Doom/Night scythe which he reallywants in his army!

There are some sub-optimal units there, but I get the sense your kid won't be rocking up to an ITC anytime soon so...

I'd get the wraith and lychguard units up to maximum size. Then grab a night scythe to transport your lychguard in.

You only have one troop unit, so 2 x 10 Immortals with Tesla carbines is a no-brainer. I'd also grab another 10 warriors to bulk up the other unit.

After that a Doomsday Ark and some Destroyers are solid choices. Not 100% on where that would leave you pts wise, but that gives you a solid core for a take all comers list.

Also chapter approved is coming out on Friday and includes a ton of pts drops for us, so you'll be able to fit in even more.

Several of these units will be getting a bit cheaper, always good news.

In regards to the 1k list,

I'd drop the deathmarks (Just not particularly good), and get Tesla Immortals, 2x10 of them is a very rock solid firing base for anti-infantry work.

Wraiths are excellent. I'd take out the Lychguard (despite the fact that I love them...but they are not user-friendly.)
Use those points to get to 6 wraiths, drop the beamers, those boys want to be in combat.

I'd swap the Annihilation barge for a doomsday ark (its about the same points after chapter approved drops)
Other than that, save your son the 70 points, and drop the res orbs, they are sort of a trap item unless you're running certain niche combinations.

That should keep you around 1k, and will be more more newcomer friendly!

So list would be like...

Lord (SoL)
OL (WS)
Cryptek (Cloak)

2x10 Tesla Immortals
x10 Warriors

x6 Wraiths

Doomsday Ark

Thanks guys - this is going to cost me! The Deathmarks are already built (He liked the cyclops look and it fitted with he Nekthyst fluff) so I guess I'll be buying 4 boxes of immortals at some point. Ah well, it's his birthday soon!)

Certainly, hopefully its helpful!
I would take a look into Ebay to be honest. The codex isn't at the top of the power curve right now. You might be able to find some deals there from folks who don't hold their models when their armies fall out of favor.

Deathmarks aren't bad...but they are outshined by other units in the dex.
