So I want a consistent colour, rather than needing to mix paints, and I use citadel paints. They don't really have a desaturated red. But could I get that effect by painting Doombull brown, then shading with Carroburg Crimson, then highlighting with a red colour?

I'd be interested to see if anyone has any examples if they've done something similar.

Thanks

Doombull brown is a very earthy-red brown. Your recipe would simply result in a brown that's very red.

Some simple color theory. To desaturate any color, you mix in a bit of it's complementary color. In the case of red, mix in green. The amount of saturation you're after will determine the amount of green you add. You may need to play around with which specific red combo'd with which specific green will give you the tone you're after, but that's the basic jist of it.

If you want to break it down further, green is made with yellow and blue. So you can control the saturation further by specifically mixing yellow and blue into your red. Primary colors, yea!

You can further desaturate by mixing whites into your highlight colors, which will further knock out the saturation. Be careful, since too much white will simply turn your red pink.

I forget the color names as I use a mix of Citadel paints can cheap hobby acrylics and mix paints ALL the time, but yes, you can use a dark brown as a base color, a dark red drybrush and a normal red highlight color to create the affect you are after

Glancing the GW website, I'd suggest Rhinox hide, then Wazdakka Red, then Evil Suns Red

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm a bit hesitant to mix colours, because every time I've tried it, I've never been able to redo it well enough to have a consistent colour through a whole army so I'm trying to find a way to emulate it with established colours
