I have been planning on incorporating some company commanders and platoon commanders into my astra militarum army but I can't find any models sold. Should I use the company command squad or leftovers from other units like my infantry squad to create them? What parts from different models would fit well together into a commander?

Use your imagination, usually commanders are more elderly with more bling in the model, or you can go the catachans route and use anyone looks heroic. Platoon commanders are junior officers usually, so someone young and fit the Lt look.

Check my IG albums for inspiration.

The usual method is to use the coat body and legs from the command squad box combined with whatever bits you think are appropriate.

This is my company commander.

In general, there are torsos in the company command kit with over-sized Aquila’s hanging from their necks. Those are refractor field generators. So if you’re a WYSIWYG fan, keep that in mind.

From there, a “Fancy” head will help the Commander to stand out.

In 8th edition, plasma pistols are amazing for their cost. Strong recommendation as good equipment.

The “Command Rod” could represent a Power Maul, which I’d say is the best-value melee upgrade for a Guardsman. A Power Fist can also help the Commander stand out from a Sargeant as sarges can’t take a fist. For the cost, I like the modelling opportunity though the number of times I’ve ever made use of them in a game is few. Mostly a cosmetic choice for me.

In addition to the kitbashing suggestions and character models shown above, try and find the old metal Cadian Colonel model off eBay too. One of my all-time favourites. He's got a power sword, a holster (so you could WYSIWYG as any sidearm) and looks fantastic. He would make a great leader for the Company Command Squad. Your Platoon Command Squad commanders can be kitbashed from literally any parts you've got. The Command Squad box is particularly good for bashing a ton of unique commander models.

Depends on the theme of your army and character of officer in question.
Some officers wear caps, to denote their rank. Some just choose to wear helmets and looked like the common soldiery.
Some carry pistols, some carry rifles.
But I'd start by just looking at what I had, and the the feel of the army I wanted to make.

If you can post some pictures of the troops you do have maybe we can tailor some suggestions.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
For instance my soldiers are in a more modern looking force. Each section has a marksman and a light machinegun. A force which relies heavily on ranged fire. The officers and veteran NCOs sometimes carry melee weapons and pistols as well as their rifles, but never instead of them. Hell you could just write their rank on their base

It's probably worth pointing out, in case it confuses anyone reading this, lasguns aren't an option for sergeants, platoon commanders or company commanders. If they want a rifle they need to take a bolter.

The intention is that you use the Command Squad box to build a Command Squad AND the Commander.

Here's my totally not-Zhukov, made just that way;

Any IG bits work, actually.
Give him a unique/less represented head. Officer's hat, cap, beret, that helmeted head with cigar (Patton!) or bare head works just fine to name just a few. There is a couple of spare heads in the command sprue.
Make him look bit fancier, maybe bit colorful than the others, pose him like he's pointing somewhere, yelling orders, talking to a radio, looking into a map/dataslate or just standing and observing. I'm not a fan of poses where he swings a sword or waves a gun as this is more suitable for commissars (platoon commanders or other frontline leaders). Avoid making him look too similar to other models, commander should be recognisable, ideally on the first sight.

I wish there were some updated Steel Legion models.

I love the Darth Vader heads on the commanders.

I believe Elysian NCOs get lasguns with auxiliary grenade launchers, which is better than a normal las gun, why have a lasgun when you can have a bolter?
Rifles can just be for aesthetic.
Binoculas are good.
can go in with a hobby knife and make a hardbitten and scary guy like I did. The only thing that is not box cadian is the liquid putty beret (ended not as badly as the other 4 heads lol.
