Welcome to my Age of SIgmar hobby blog: Dark Oath.

This is a regularly updated blog featuring my Slaves to Darkness army as it grows. The look and tone of this army is heavily inspired by the paintings of Frank Frazetta and the Conan stories by Robert E Howard.

Go to the latest post to see the most recent additions to this army or scroll through and see what has been added over time. I'm not a pro and don't expect to ever be, however friendly/constructive feedback is always welcome!

My original 1st post detailing the aims and inspiration for this project:
Spoiler:

Hello Dakka,

I've decided to start posting updates on my latest hobby project as a method of keeping me motivated. I've got a new job which takes up more of my life than it should, and I'm going to be a dad for the first time in three months time. Essentially what I'm saying is that my hobby time has been squeezed and it is only going to get squeezed further! I love and need the hobby. It does wonders for my mental health and lets me indulge in a little bit of escapism when i need to unwind. I'm hoping this will help me keep it going.

My goal is to spend the next few months getting an army together and painting it up to a half decent standard. Then I'll have a little warband to game with and grow over time. I'm not a pro painter and have no real aspirations to be. If I'm honest I'm a bit of speed painter and I'm happy if my models get to a "table-top" standard. That being said, I'm also not against any friendly advice or pointers on how I might improve my painting game.

Now as far as what I want to achieve with this army's look goes, I was inspired to start collecting a bunch of muscle bound unwashed barbarians after revisiting my Conan books earlier this year. The visual inspiration will be the look and feel of the absolute legend Frazetta's iconic sword and sorcery inspired work.

I love the bronze's, reds and oranges and think that this aesthetic will work really well. However, there is a danger that this will make the army look super "Khornate" and I'm hoping to go for a chaos undivided 90% mortals kinda look. Think chaos with a small c. These guys will be rampaging barbarians who worship a pantheon of dark gods, as opposed to the chosen soldiers of a given deity who fight alongside daemons and the like. So I've decided to go with snowy bases to kind of cool down the hell-fire and blood for the blood god feel of my colour palette. Hopefully this gives the models a nice contrast with the base as well.

I've completed my first two regiments and my first character and I have some Xmas goodies that are now on the workbench. I'll upload my first photographs of the completed models in just a moment.

And here are the first miniatures I painted for this project. These were all painted before the blog begun but were uploaded on the night that I begun posting and all feature in the army! :

Spoiler:

I had a box of 20 marauders and ten khorne bloodbound chaps which I have converted to be marauders. As well as this a couple of old mordheim models have also found their way into the mob.

I've tried to do what I can to vary up how each of them look to give a vague colour scheme but a generally rag-tag sorta look.

And now the first box of warriors that I only finished last night...

And a model I have always wanted to paint.

Next on the workbench are some Warhounds of chaos, gargants, a converted chariot idea I have, more marauders and some special characters that I have coming in the post!!!

Look forward to any feedback or ideas, I'll be posting again soon.

Brilliant start, and congrats on some very precise pictures of your models, you must have a nice setup to shoot these, they are appreciated.

Keep up the good work, these first marauders really tell a story, on spot with the barbarian look you want to achieve. The addition of mordheim models is very welcome.

And as a fellow follower of chaos and parent of a 15 month old, I wish you the best on the arrival of the small one, don't worry, there is still room for hobby time !

Looking good (well, apart from that massive mould line on that Maruader's weapon )

Are you prepared to look outside GW? As KIllbox Games (who strangely appear to have dropped off the earth) do an excellent Death Dealer figure. Plus there is Fenris from Privateer Press who is in exactly the same pose as the first picture.

Thanks mate!!! It’s the other half who does the photos so I’ll pass on the compliment to her!
Here’s to raising the next generation of chaos warriors haha

Mate when I first saw that picture up close I was like - bugger I’ve left a mould line.

The other half was like, yeah but whose gonna notice?

I was like...these are wargamers...they’ll notice haha

Probably keeping things GW to be honest as likely to play in store a little bit.

Hello Dakka,

Little update. (Poor quality photos but nothings painted anyway...) My brother very kindly bought me 20 more marauders for xmas. From what I understand big blobs is the way to go with these guys so this is perfect. I could run a unit of 20 and unit of 30 easily now or make one super unit.

Now the problem arises that the head sculpts and poses inevitably start repeating themselves so I have been looking at ways of varying up what they look like. Here are a few WIP images of the regiment so far. Painting hasn't really begun = just sprayed black with a little brown messily sloshed onto the skin tone areas.

Here I have used the extra standard bearer arms you get in the box to convert some pole axes. I've used some chaos warrior heads to add variation and created a skull helmet as well. I've added an arrow from the gargant sprue to the shield as well.

A few more skull faced chaps. Definitely game of thrones inspired...I've also been using some of the flail armed marauder poses to make some of the barbarians hold their axes in two hands as opposed to one.

And with all those spare arrows left, I thought why not let a few of the barbarians be modelled mid-death?

One chap has been struck in the neck and chest and another has got an arrow straight to the eye.

It is only as I am typing this I realise i seriously missed a trick...

"I was once a chaos lord like you, until I got an arrow to the knee..."

Perhaps next time...

Loving the look of these. I think the oranges and reds on the weapons really look the business, particularly on large units. And the dark armour with bright shields and weapons is really striking.

I prefer my Chaos small c as well, I dislike the modern "all raging all the time" Khorne side of things.

Thanks for the feedback! Cheers - I’m quite happy with how the colour scheme is coming out!

Yeah definitely with a small C - more Norse than “chaos” I reckon.

Btw for anyone who is interested the ember swords were straight up stolen from this tutorial:

TIny little update Dakka,

The new marauders have all of their base colours on and washes as well. Gonna hopefully start making them look nice over the next few nights. Pics to come soon.

In the mean time thought I'd share this...

This is an old citadel miniatures annual of mine (LOVE THAT COVER ART WORK!)

But check out this chaos champion. I love the look of this guy and have managed to find him (alongside a few old metal marauders) on ebay. Thinking of giving him a nice big scenic base and making him my chaos lord. The current chaos lord model is a mutated chap with horns that looks more "Dark Lord" and less "Angry Barbarian". I think this little slice of Oldhammer will be a perfect fit for the feel of my new army and I cannot wait for him to arrive!!!!

I'd love to see how they come out - make sure you upload. I want to do some chaos knights at some point just trying to paint everything iv'e got for this force before buying any more!

Cheers! Simple isn't it. The rules only say "barbarian axe" so i'm guessing it doesn't matter how big said axe is haha.

Hellloooooo Dakka,

Managed to get the skin tones on the barbarian marauders complete tonight. I think these are coming out better than my first batch (as is often the case with these things...)

Still a little way to go with these but I'm happy with the outcomes so far.

As always, any feedback is appreciated.

I'm not prone to enjoying WFB/AoS minis but these are wonderful, as is the Greater Daemon of Dalmatia.

Boys and girls... look what I just won on eBay for one pound...ONE POUND!!!!

Everybody’s favourite off-brand Conan. The sword weirding, freshly waxed barbarian from heroquest!!!

Cannot wait to paint this.

Any ideas what I should use him as??? Perhaps the leader for my marauders?

Second lot of marauders are done! Really think these came out better than t5he first. I've picked up a better brush and spent a little more time considering lighting etc. They took much longer than the first batch but hopefully the difference is in the final product. As always feedback is really welcome!

First of all some close ups of individual minis.

And now some group shots!

And with one of my warriors in a heroic (or more likely evil...) sort of pose.

Ah! The hero quest barbarian, pure nostalgia.

The windswept beard head is one of my favorites and I think you've done it justice here. He looks focused but still wild.

Funny you should mention him. He arrived this morning in all of his red plastic glory. Apart from a baby-daddy to be course I attended, I was free basically all of the day. So i painted him up!
Experiemnted a little with the sword here. Was going for a kinda skyrim-esque/runic looking thing - not sure how successful it was.

Really happy with the skin tone - feel like i'm getting to grips with this now. If you zoon right in you'll see I've experimented with giving him some veins that are visible on his legs and arms. I've seen some pro painters do this sort of thing and I thought I'd give it a try. It's one model after all. I'll be damned if I'd do that much detail on every guy in the army.

As always Dakka, let me know what you think!!! I'm going to use him as a marauder chieftain leading a bunch of the barbarians i've painted up. Inevitable scale creep means he's probably not the tallest chap in the army. I combated this by giving him a bit more of a scenic base. Also I carved up the old hero quest base and left a bit more under his feet. (Meaning he is kind of wearing platform shoes). I've also carved the sword slightly as the old model had a rounded edge instead of a sharp point. I'd not normally cannibalise a classic like this...but it cost me a quid so I don't feel too bad!

This model was just an absolute joy to paint. Considering when it was made and the cheap one piece model, two part mould style plastic it was, it actually looks okay by today's standards. It does have a certain He-man aesthetic but I welcome it!

This guy will get a 5+ armour save in game which is pretty funny. However if he's running around in the snow in nothing but a loin cloth I reckon he must be pretty tough!

The hero quest barbarian came out great! I don't think i ever realized there was all that detail on his sword. Probably because mine broke off... accidentally

I love the chaos champions expression, he's really quite manic. I think it gives the figure a lot of energy even with the static pose.

Nice work on the NMM, and the rest of the barbarian as well. Good luck with the rest of the model!

I'm really liking your yellow and red paint scheme, and I just love the first pics you posted! A horde of barbarians in a glow of.. something? So atmospheric! My one critique is that some of your marauders look a bit bobble-headed, especially those that are wearing helmets.

Thanks for the feedback. I think the NMM is okay for a first attempt. Looks better in person at arms length but not as good in the close up picture. I think it’s a blending issue - again, first attempt! Thanks for the praise.

The bobble head comment made me laugh out loud haha! Fair point. Chaos warrior heads on little marauder bodies is the cause there. Mid horde it’s less noticeable but one guy on his own can definitely look somewhat big headed
