It's coming...

We’re excited to announce an amazing new product line for 2019 and beyond: Reaper Bones Black!

Since launching our Reaper Bones miniatures in 2012, Reaper Miniatures has produced and shipped over 25 million plastic models to gamers and painters around the world. But despite the success of Reaper Bones, we continually look for ways to improve our products. We’ve taken everything that makes Reaper Bones Miniatures so successful and enhanced it. We’ve always listened to our customers, and after years of feedback, we made Reaper Bones Miniatures even better with Reaper Bones Black.
• High Detail – Reaper Bones Black holds more detail and is equal to resin or metal
• Rigid Material – weapons and thin parts are much more rigid and hold their shape, but still flexible enough to withstand constant handling
• Improved Pigmentation – Reaper Bones Black models are tinted dark grey for ease of painting and viewing
• Reduced Seam and Shift Lines - produced with high-grade steel molds, Reaper Bones Black models are cleaner, crisper, and require less cleaning

But we didn’t change everything. Customers can expect the same great features with Reaper Bones Black as they do with Reaper Bones.
• Amazing sculpts – created by the best artists in the gaming industry
• Consumer-friendly pricing – Reaper Bones Black gives customers great value for their dollars
• Wide selection – Reaper Bones Black will continue to provide consumers a variety of options to suit all types of gaming. \
• Painter Friendly – made for painters and gamers, by painters and gamers.
• Ready to Paint – just a quick rinse with soap and water and you’re ready to paint
• Scaled to Fit – Reaper Bones Black models are the same size and scale as all Reaper miniatures and all modern gaming models
• Integral Bases – Reaper Bones Black models come with integral bases so they’re ready to play with right out of the package
• Always in Stock – Reaper Bones Black models won’t go out of stock and can always be reordered. You’ve got the demand. We’ve got the supply.

wow, that's interesting. I love using Bones for non-display pieces, so anything more along of them is a great thing for gaming.

Ohhh that sounds really interesting!

I've some earlier Bones and for big things like dragons its an ideal thing for casual model buying when you dont' want to spend £100+ on a single large model. Though if they can get the Bones price with metal level of detail that's really going to be a big game changer.

I foresee another multimillion £ KS!

Some of the more recent Bones KS minis have been in a darker grey and have been more durable with sharp detail. If this is the route they are going I’m all for it, especially if they can maintain the affordable pricing.

So basically this is just a new pvc mix with abs weapons is what I'm reading. Bones are nice price wise but still behind CMoN and other board games manufacturers in terms of quality.

Having both Bones and Ludocraft board game minis, that’s debatable. Each method has its good and bad examples.

I've backed all the bones KSers and at the human size are still not as good as say my Bloodrage stuff and way worse then anything Monolith has put out. Of course that's subjective but there's a reason why I have lots of human sized boardgame pieces painted up from only like 2 bones figures.

Obviously we really don't know what Bones Black is as they haven't told us anything about it yet outside of marketing speak but I'm not expecting Reaper to develop some new tech here -- it's just a reformulation. They've stated on KSer that if an existing Bones figure gets moved to BB then a new mold is made so that is further evedence on the PVC/ABS split.

From the forum
All Expansions (Dreadmere, Darkreach, Chronoscope, Lost Valley, Fan Favorites) are all in Bones Black. About half the Options are too. Give or take.
With KS4 delvering in a monthish people will start seeing how the new material compaires. Was smart of them to have an existing KSer delvier the new material as it will get a lot of reviews out there rather quickly.

I wonder if the recent Wizkids lines (Pathfinder battles, Nolzur's mini's, etc.) have had an influence on the material being used?

Sounds interesting, but I remain sceptical that a PVC mini can match a metal one (never mind a resin one) for sharpness and intricacy of detail.

I also hope this isn't the start of Reaper phasing out their metal minis altogether.

This smells like another Bones Black Kickstarter is on the way. I'm happy to hear that the expansions from the last Kickstarter will be in the new better material.

White was always a terrible choice. Hopefully this will make them competitive on quality with other manufacturers (like CMON)

Bones 4 is delivering soon, it is due to deliver starting in February, traditionally the next bones Kickstarter is a couple months after the current one delivers. So I expect bones 5 will follow that pattern.

Didn't they show off some KSer5 stuff at Reapercon? I don't hang out on their forum like I use too but that's always been the case for past KSers.

Pretty disappointed in the free figure. If you want to promote the new material it should have been a few human sized characters as at the size for that Owlbear white bones really isn't bad.

I want to see how this stuff handles faces and weapons.

Monkeysloth has a point, but it's nice seeing decent Owlbear sculpts. I hate most of them. This one I like.

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

Well, you can't satisfy everyone -- including myself.

I still haven't painted my Bones KS owlbear, so no need for another one. Interestingly, the Bones Black owlbear is a buck more than the Bones version. I'm sure I'll end up waiting until Oct-Nov-Dec to see Reaper's promotions -- and I'm also sure the owlbear still won't be painted by then.

When's KS V gonna start?

Out of interest, I was of the understanding that Reaper were opening a UK distribution site during 2018 - anyone know if that has happened and, if so, how it affects ordering from them?

Yes they have.
If you change the currency in their webshop to Pounds (or Euros, I think) it automatically takes you to their UK site.

Haven't used it myself yet. Was planning to, to get some of their Christmas minis, but the weird way it calculates VAT makes it more expensive to get their promo minis, so I didn't bother in the end.
Plus a big chunk of their catalogue isn't available on the UK site yet.

If I read properly, on the Reaper forums, the expansions, but not the Core, of Bones 4 will be in Bones Black.

So, in a way, the first Bones Black Kickstarter has already taken place.

And, yes, I think that the competition from WizKids is one of the driving forces.

And that is a good thing.

Yeah, they mentioned the Bones4 expansions will be Bones Black material. From Reaper's facebook comments It also sounds like Bones Black will be a new line, not just a revised PVC blend. They mention that it requires a slightly different type of mold so they can't just cast the older Bones stuff in Bones Black, which is unfortunate.

They also posted an unpainted Owlbear, which they really should have posted in the announcement as it's buried in the comments

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I should clarify, the new molds part is conjecture since they mentioned Bones Black will be a new line of new figures going forward, but we may see some of the old figures re-done in Bones Black. Reaper didn't specifically say they required different molds, but it sure sounds like there's a difference in how they're manufactured

with their restock issues with bones and this new material I almost wonder if this stuff is with a different producer? Otherwise how is going to bones black going to solve that issue since that was clearly a factory production slot issue

especially since the bases seem to have switched style too

This is partly why I'm annoyed Reaper never let people know Bones black was a thing before the pledge manager was closed. There are several things I passed up on in bones4 due to dislike of the material in the size of figure only now to find out many of those things are produced in a different material (which they had to know they were going to be using the pledge manger closed down). With bones it's kind of get it at KSer or hope it comes to retail in a reasonable amount of time as it can take 2 years for them to release something to retail and then you're just hoping they made enough that you can buy one.

Just speculation, but what was the latest on their in-house injection machine, Tommy the Train? Last I heard, they used it to make bases, but that was a long time ago. AFAIK, They only have one injection machine, but they could make additional models after their overseas producer makes the initial run of models?

Also, thanks to you and Kala for the owlbear promotional news and pics!

No, they're not being made in house

Are these being produced at the factory in Texas, then?
I asked ReaperRon the same question earlier on Facebook. I’ve quoted his reply below:

”Read it more like once we start making it, it will always be available. It won't come out in a Wave and then no longer be available. “

Which were? I dunno what happened but Bones is excellent for big models and harvesting for parts for conversions. There's several conversions I couldn't have made pre-Bones due to the parts being too heavy and/or expensive.
