Hey, I'm having a little argument about smite. The rule says it hits the closest visible unit. The situation here is that the closest unit is not visible. My interpretation is that it then goes on the 2nd closest, which is visible.
Does it work like that, or is it like the revised version of targeting characters where it needs to be both visible and the closest?
Thanks!

It says "the closest visible enemy unit within 18"", so if the closest unit is not visible, then it's not the closest visible enemy unit. Much the same way that having a friendly unit closer doesn't mean that a further enemy unit can't be hit. The rule only cares about units that meet all three criteria, "closest visible enemy".

So if you play where there is decent LoS blocking terrain, you may be able to position your Psyker in a way the presents a specific target as the "closest visible enemy", even if not the actual closest
Though this is so incredibly situational, it's barely worth mentioning

I've done it. I want to smite your Knight not your Infantry Squad... so I will move behind that wall!

on the other hand Nobz they decided it was in the best interest of ork society that they "Go Green" as such they specifically modified their warbikes to not make giant smoke, dust, grit, clouds. Instead they are all about driving with clean air, one might say their bikes Gak out rainbows.

What if the unit is within 18 inches, but the first visible model in that unit is at 20 inches from the psyker? It's a weird situation that I'd be interested to know what the group thinks.

The unit is visible and the unit is within 18". It fulfills both criteria so you can do it. The game doesn't care about it on a model by model basis.
