Who's your favourite dark horse character?

Mine is Lucas the Trickster, he is looked down upon, seen as a fool and always overlooked, but he will fight for glory for his chapter, even when no one will know what he's accomplished and even giving others credit for his accomplishments, while allowing everyone to look at him like an idiot, even though he's a badass.

Does Huron blackheart count?

He has what probably ammounts to the second biggest Chaos fleet, managed to trade a Blackstone fortress from Abby for his support, probably has a decent sized warband (certainly bigger then your average csm warband) is neither completly nuts nor stupid and pulled off diverse things however is never really at the forefront since aby and the 4 monogod sock puppets always steal him the show.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

I don't know, I've always thought of him as being like any other of the champions, he just wasn't a veteran of the GC or HH. People forget that he's been around as long as the rest of them in real terms, he's been there since 2nd edition.

Considering that he explicitly ISN'T a legionaires but in terms of warfare capability basically nearly number two if the legions don't internally work together i guess he is a dark Horse.

Yes he is, he was the chapter master of the Astral Claws, so explicitly is a legionnaire.

Longer. He was floating around in snippets and WD articles in the RT-era. 'the big guns never tire' quote is attributed to him.

I was always under the vague impression that he was someone's personal character from a studio campaign, same as Ghazghkull. Either Priestley or Chambers. Probably Priestley's, since he wrote up the original Badab Uprising articles way back in WD 101.

@Delvarus- Eh? Astral Claws are a 10th founding codex chapter. Huron didn't become a marine until roughly the mid-41st millenium, and became Chapter Master in 697.M41. He isn't a legionnaire in any way at all, being 10,000 years too late for that party.

I thought he meant legionnaire as in Astartes. A legionnaire vs an Adeptus Astartes are not different at all in that it would make one a dark horse, there are many legionaries that have been killed by chapter masters. Length of service also has no consideration in legionaries, humans inducted into the Death Guard for instance are still technically legionaries. Compared to Kharn, Typhus etc. maybe but the gods can gift its servants with more power than age and experience.

What exactly is a 'dark horse' character?

The Fall of Kronstaat IV
Война Народная | Voyna Narodnaya | The People's War - 2,765pts painted (updated 06/05/20)
Волшебная Сказка | Volshebnaya Skazka | A Fairy Tale (updated 29/12/19, ep10 - And All That Could Have Been)
Kabal of The Violet Heart (updated 02/02/2020)

All 'crimes' should be treasured if they bring you pleasure somehow.

In-universe, the Badab War only happened less than a century before the destruction of Cadia. I take exception to your claim that Lufgt Huron was " neither completly nuts nor stupid"; it's made fairly clear that he was a megalomaniac and possibly paranoiac too. It's mentioned that with hindsight, he should never have been allowed anywhere near the command of a Space Marine chapter.

https://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/dark-horse.html
"A dark horse is someone, who was previously little known, emerges to prominence in a competition."

Commissar Yarrick would fit - at the time of the 2nd War for Armageddon, he was essentially retired, serving out his time with the Armaggeddon PDF in a backwater hive. Until the Orks arrived, and he became a legend. Or Ghazgkull himself, I suppose; one stray bolt round to the head and he's the prophet of the Waaagh! And Yvraine, deposed Eldar corsair turned gladiatrix to emissary of a new god.

So really that's almost any character in 40K.

GW do love their reductive archetypes.

I'm going to repeat my answer from the other character thread; Bequa Kynska.
