Hungry Ork Hunta Lying in Wait

Hello Dakka! I've been waiting for the new goblins before jumping back into AoS after finishing a Ironjawz Army (very upset I can't ally them, but oh well) and would love to hear some tactics and other feedback on some things.

1) Shootas

I have 60 of these lovely goblins with bows, Would it be best to run them 40/20 or three units of 20? I've heard mixed results with people running these, stating stabbas are flat out better and the extra bow shots do nothing. I quite like some ranged firepower and with the loonboss's command ability and their own backstab buffs in larger unit sizes they can do quite a lot more damage than some archer units, whilst importantly choking the opponent in bodies I don't really care about.

2) Stabbas
I have 80'ish with spears, would it be best to run a block of 60 and one of 20, or two of 40?

I'll have some shaman support, fanatics and the new spore ones to buff the attack characteristic of the grots.

I'll also run my tried and true favourite of my rogue Idol flanked by two Gargants, the amount of damage they can do is immense, giants are (if unreliable) a fantastic damage output package for their cost and base size, whilst rogue idol can buff bravery and casting bonus, meaning reaching +3 isn't hard to do for my shamans and can potentially out magic a LoC occasionally.

Any other tactics people have tried for a gobo heavy army? Im working on this, and also a Monster/spider theme with a liberal sprinkling of everyones favourite squigs.

I expect 40 or 60 will be the sweet spot for unit size to max command groups and netters. Anything under 40 will just evaporate to battleshock.

Bows should be fine for a backline objective holding blob but you will regret the lack of shields if anyone reaches them.

In terms of the Bows, you may get added mileage by sticking a unit you're about to engage in combat.

Just a couple of casualties caused at range all helps add to the Battleshock Pot. And when you're playing an army that revolves around attrition rather than outright damage, that's not to be sniffed at. Especially if they're trying to finish off a previously wounded model.

Blobs of 60 stabbas with spears are one of the stronger units in the book, especially with buffs. 40/20 on the archers because you can loonshrine the 40-man back and it will still have 20; enough to get the size bonus for 15+ on their shots.

Stabbas are better than bows, especially with buffs, but bows are not actually bad. Just run what you like.

How does the math end up re spears or normal stabbas?

As someone who doesn't play AoS (but am interested in starting) is it generally accepted that a unit with a 1" range can attack in 2 rows with 25mm bases? Since an inch is slightly longer than 25mm.

My point is, do normal stabbas attack with the front row and the one right behind it (assuming everything is smushed up as far to the front as possible)? Would pokin' spears be front row and 2 rows further back?

You got it right; 1" 25mm is two ranks, 2" is three. Having run a 60-man blob back in the day it very much ends up being 50% extra models in range in practice.

Okay thanks, that makes sense.

Don't want to hijack the thread but then grots seem really good with all the buffs you can hand out to them (and fanatics)
