Just a simple thread but I'm curious what people have thought about the new White Dwarf format that we've had for January and if you feel its worth subscribing too or not and why. Please vote and share your thoughts on the magazine!

It's an improvement over the last reboot - but that's not really saying a great deal.

There are some bizarre choices (like the total removal of new releases, or Chapter Approved apparently forgetting about the Crimson Fists background White Dwarf introduced in September 2017).

The more wordy articles are in large part gibberish disguised as something deep or insightful.

If you particularly want the Crimson Fists rules or Kroot Killteam rules (which don't include a Shaper, because screw it, I guess) it might be worth getting, but otherwise I wouldn't say it's worth the £6 price tag.

Plus, when the new editor takes up the job, are we going to see yet another reboot? It seems like an odd time to do it now under guest editors rather than somebody permanent.

Well, I know subscription holds and off the shelf sales of White Dwarf have declined significantly at the LGS over the last few years, while 40K is still by far the most played non CCG game at the store. I think the Warhammer Community website has stolen a lot of the magazine's thunder. It's gotten to be so well done, with previews, articles, and diverse content like cartoons and jokes (Regimental Standard, Roll Models, etc.), that White Dwarf itself has gotten to be a bit of a dinosaur. It's struggling to find a niche and purpose, as many print mags are in the internet era.

I read it cover to cover, which I don't usually do with White Dwarf. I liked the AoS section the most - the realm of fire stuff was great, the story was decent enough, and who doesn't love skirmish rules? I previously knew nothing about the Crimson Fists, so I thought that section was interesting, though a little hard to follow as someone with limited 40k background. And it was fun to read articles by some people that were really passionate about the games they were making, even if there wasn't a lot of content to them. It's just great to be swept up in that enthusiasm.

I don't like that they no longer show releases. White Dwarf hasn't traditionally been an amazing magazine, but it does work really well as a chronicle of Games Workshop over the year. I can go back through my 2017 subscription and see what was released, what GW was talking about, and generally relive that particular moment in time. Warhammer Community is a terrible replacement for that particular function.

My problem is that if they are going to put actual game content in the magazine, then they need to start getting my subscription to me less than 3 weeks after everyone else. My magazines are so absurdly late that I tend to read about what's in next month's issue before I have the current one in my hands. That was annoying before when it was just battle reports and nice pictures of models, but actual content needs to be a little more timely if I'm going to be able to use it when everybody else is still interested in it.

that's a very good point and one I hadn't thought of, despite indulging in dipping into old white dwarf issues myself

I liked it. Especially the Battle Report going back to the 90’s style somewhat.

It is more of a hobby magazine and less an advertisement. It’s showing off what keeps people hooked in terms of the activities etc.

Mostly interested to see how they keep it up.
