Well done everyone who finished an entry, great work all round. I voted for
Modock- standout entry for me this month, great painting (as always) and really nice bases too. Nice use of hair colour to tie the two very different models together
Power elephant- good vibrant yellow. Really like the texture on the purple coat
Wishwargaming- must admit I'm not really a fan of shiny/reflective power armour but these are so nicely done I had to give them a vote anyway. Looks particularly good on the thrusters
Feltmonkey- really like the textures on the clothing. Ian's face is excellent as well.
Peregrine- always liked the DKoK minis and this muted gritty paint job really does them justice. Great work on the base too
Lipsdapips- another month, another lap piece that looks like It's been taken from a gw box cover. Great stuff
Eski- another great krieg entry. Good use of the red to add some variety and well done from stopping the relatively strong colour from dominating

A Protoss colony world

Wow, the quality of entries this month is well above even our usual high standards! Almost makes me want to just eat my brushes and drink my paints! Seriously though, it was hard to narrow it down to 5 votes. I voted for:
Nevelon: A Deathwatch Kill Team really nails the theme, and these might well be your best work yet!
Modock: Yet more awesome Infinity stuff from you. Seriously, being able to paint such intricate and small models to such a level is amazing!
Captain Brown: Some people might say Guardsmen are too mundane to make look good, but these mortar teams are really cool looking!
lipsdapips: Those Ultras are really amazingly crisp! I love how you put the power sword effects on the partly drawn blade.
Ezki: I love the general look of Death Korps of Krieg (very WW1 inspired), and you absolutely nailed that look with these models.

I had a lot of fun participating. I've still got a lot to learn about taking better photos and making metallics look more interesting (I think I've got silver figured out, but gold still eludes me), but I'm happy with my entry nonetheless. Shout out as always to Paradigm for organizing and running these little challenges. It's always nice to see everyone showing off their painting chops. See you all in the February challenge!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

As I've never done so before, and am currently hiding in the office anyway to avoid my mother-in-law, I thought I'd write a couple thoughts on everyones entry.

Spoiler:
Nevelon: The silver arms look good, and the brushwork is flawless. They could use some more detailing, I think.

GulGog Tuftoof: Tonnes of detail, and very neat! I think doing some shading and highlighting on the lenses would really make them pop.

Midget Gems: Just plain awesome. Especially like the rosy nose on the goblin. Paint with your other hand this month so the rest of us stand a chance.

Modock: Utterly fantastic. I agree with the previous comment that these would easily be good enough for box art. You should paint in the dark this month to even the playing field.

Captain Brown: Really effective scheme, neat painting and lovely job on the faces. Good idea with the cloth covered ammo crates!

Zergsmasher: Nice scheme and some really awesome colours – the brown robe on the guy with the flamer looks particularly good. I’d suggest a bit more contrast on the golds – perhaps just a wash of black or dark brown to bring out the embossed parts?

Power Elephant: Beautiful shading on the yellow, and the texture on the bodysuits and the purple coat are amazing. I think you’re gonna have to paint with the lights out this month, too…

WishWarGaming: Excellent shading, especially on the blue. Great detailing – nice job on the checkered knee pad! It looks to me like the gold could use a little more attention – a dark shade and silver highlight, maybe.

AUGmaniac: So many memories coming back just seeing the hobbits! Solid painting and good colours. It looks like they could use just a touch of definition on the faces – a little black wash in the eyes would bring out the detail.

5up35: Got to admit, it’s really tough to see anything in the photos. They look to be pretty good, and interesting conversions! Probably it would be a good idea to tinker with your camera for the next round.

Maharg: Great job – really characterful and the textures look authentic. I’d suggest getting a slightly less glossy varnish or sealer.

DukeofBeer: Awesome! Really characterful models and painting. The green on the lass’s chestplate is lovely and the crate looks about a million times better than its actual sculpt. Is the short bard guy based on the one from that Netflix show?

SirOllox: Solid painting and good details. The faces have come out great. The blue on the orcs legs seems a little too fluorescent, somehow, though. A bit more light in the photo would help, too.

Suzuteo: Interesting models, and the metal sections have a great feel to them – grimy and dirty but well maintained. The basing is simple but really effective. I’m not a fan of the super bright, clean blue – a shade or two would really help it.

Flinty: Excellent colours and textures, I really like the scheme. The only part of these which I find off-putting is the strange bases, personally.

Feltmonkey: Not much to say besides WOW! Beautiful colours, shading and textures. Perhaps the only scope to improve is on Han’s eyes, which look a little strange?

Vejut: Awesome. So much character packed into them. Standout for me is definitely that beak!

Peregrine: Brilliant job, really conveying the feel of the Death Korps. Nice one picking out the individual medals, too! I guess the only thing I could suggest is some dirt on their boots and coats from stomping through the mud.

Lipsdapips: Glorious. I don’t like Space Marines, but I love these. The markings on the Lt’s helmet are beautiful, and so crisp. That parchment shading, too… :O Perhaps a little green glow from the blade could be interesting..?

Ezki: Yes. Just yes. Strangely enough in the sea of fantastic that is your entry, the standout for me is the that beautiful shading on the banner…

Jadenim: Excellent job. Great shading and colours, and no detail left behind. The sickly pallid flesh is top notch. The only possible issue I see is that the boots on the right guy blend in with the colour of the base – it seems more visually appealing on the left guy whose boots are a different colour.

JustALittleOrkish: Given that they are just a pair of doors, these are actually really impressive. R2Door2 and C3POpen? The shading on the white is great.

PossumCraft: Learn to paint.

Chris56: Excellent. The shading on the red is beautiful, and offset perfectly by the little touches of turquoise. The toxic green on the bases is an awesome touch, as are the glowing eyes. You should be limited to black and white paints this month.

Paradigm: Beautiful painting and really gritty colours. The most realistic LotR miniatures I’ve seen anywhere, and you’ve done the more fine scale sculpts so much justice! The only thing I don’t really like is Legolas’ skintone, which might well be the photo.

@Possum: Your comments about handicapping the other painters in the comp had me laughing, and I totally agree. Us mere mortals need some way of being able to compete! Also, I'm putting in my requisition right now for a transfer to whatever planet and detail your guards(wo)men are on.

Thanks for the kind comments, Possum. Ha, I sound like Dame Edna Everage. A reference only the old gits like myself will get!

Anyway, those goddamn eyes! Yes, they let the whole entry down. The problem I had was that they're not sculpted on the model for some reason. The rest of the face is incredibly well sculpted, an uncanny likeness of Harrison Ford, but the eyes are just holes. What are you supposed to do with that? I tried to paint them anyway, which took a whole evening of trying, failing, and trying again, before eventually giving up and deciding they were as good as I was going to manage. They look okay from like one angle, but it's not the golden angle for the photograph. From every other angle they look really weird. I realise now I should have either painted them completely black, or tried putting in a tiny blob of varnish to fill the hole and give me something to paint on. The holes are far too small for green stuff - I'd have ended up destroying some of the facial detail.

Also, thanks for the comments, Maharg. I love that your autocorrect changed Han’s name to Ian.

Thank you for your kind words Maharg, ZergSmasher and PossumCraft!

Many great entries once again, voting was pretty hard.
Nevertheless, I voted for a few of them:

Modock: Stunning work as usual. The clothes and metallics look spot on.

Captain Brown: Somehow this mortar team caught my eye: the paintjob is great and those guardsmen remind me of my military service days. There is no proper english word for it, but one the guardsmen has the face of a soldier "who loses their military discipline due to small amount of service time left" (in finnish: "gonahtaa"). Just a funny note, did not intend to make fun of the models in any way.

Dukeofbeer: Really classy looking pair. I like the bright colors and all the small details.

Lipsadips: I'm usually not a fan of Ultramarines, but you nailed the color scheme pretty darn well! The first image showing both of the models is also really good and represent their character well.

Possumcraft: Even though you claim that you should paint better, I liked this one. What caught my eye was the base and the character casually wielding a brush. For the future: tone done the basing just a teeny tiny bit so it would not be so crowded and practice a bit with the skin (something I too really struggle with). Good work nonetheless!

Paradigm: Stunning represantion of the LOTR characters. The cloth looks really realistic. Gimli is my favorite one, he is just fantastic!

Good job everyone who finished their entries and once again thank you for everyone who keeps this thing running!

Thanks Possumcraft. The bases are supposed to be a bit weird as they are stuck in an ever changing alien space fortress

Glad the varied schemes seem.to have worked out.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! These are great fun to participate in.
I really enjoyed the range of entries this month- the star wars and lord of the rings minis were favorites for me!
Modock- holy cow your infinity minis are always great! Awesome work
@Possum- I'm not sure which netflix show you're talking about, but if it's got a bard I'm in. Also your basing this month was really cool and post-apocalyptic. I like it!

Really good entries for this Months challenge, I voted for more than normal just because it simply wasn't possible not to give some of these entries a vote Honestly forgotten who I've voted for since I did it at the start and have been away all week with work.

Thanks for commenting on all the entries Possumcraft, some fun comments in there

I'm really sorry, but I can't post comments on everyone's work this month. :(

I've been trying for an hour but my PC is still borked, and this laptop has serious issues. It keeps opening a windows help box every couple of seconds or locking the screen for no reason. This short message has so far taken a further ten minutes.

Suffice to say amazing work everyone. I particularly loved the entries from Modock, Chris56, and Midget Gems.

Thanks for the comment Possum. I haven't used any varnish on these, just gw paints (and maybe some finger grease). I often struggle with shine off models in photos. Anyone got some tips for reducing shine in photos? I guess more diffuse light from a lightbox might help?

Spray varnish would help. I always have the same issue if I don't varnish before taking photos.

Utilizing Careful Highlighting

Maharg: it looks like you might be using either a flash or just one main light source and possibly having some white balance issues. Two or more sources at a wide angle, and ideally at the same (known) color temperature would help some, and yeah, diffusing the light with a light box, a bit of distance, or even just wax paper might help as well. Doesn't have to be fancy--mine this month are lit by three 100w desk lamps set about 2-3 feet away at the corners of my desk, and my usual setup is two cheap 8" brooder lamps with LEDs in them and wax paper clothespinned in front.

Congrats Felt, Lips, Ezki and Modock

Some lovely entries there and also some very good ones that didn't quite make the top 3 so well done everyone

Agree with Paras comment, everything in Modocks models just seems to work together so well and it makes 2 really wonderful models to look at

League table will be updated hopefully in the next few days but depending on my work it might be pushed to the weekend. I'll post when I'm able do it

Congrats to the winners, and everyone really. Solid month all around. I find I’m voting for more people these days, as one of the things that will draw my vote is seeing someone improve from last time.

As this year’s comp draws to a close I’d strongly recommend that everyone take a look back at their entries and see how far they have come. Lots of amazing progress!
