If how you store it is not listed, please explain. I have mine inside cardboard boxes with the top cut open for easy access, with paper currently on top to keep dust out. I will get proper storage/display cases when i have completed all my models 100%, since i only got in to this mid last year.

I actually really would like to build some awesome terrain for them to be stored on inside a glass sqaure or some thing.

Ultras get to live in the lighted glass china cabinet with a good seal to keep the dust out.
Deathwatch/Eldar/Undead get to live in a glass-fronted bookcase that isn’t quite as dust proof.
Everything else is crammed onto a cheep, crappy plastic shelving unit open to whatever life brings.
Some old random stuff is in boxes/cases. Like my OGRE stuff, Silent Death, misc D&D minis. etc.

The cases and spare trays go into the cupboard of shame.
When the game dies, or I tire of the game, the contents of that cupboard move to the shed of shame, there to remain, forgotten and unmourned.

Split between the giant plastic bin with pluck foam trays that i transport most stuff in, sitting on storage shelves, and sprawled out on my desk. I also tend to "organize" stuff into cardboard boxes from GW kits when i need to transport bigger stuff that doesn't fit in the foam trays or I want to store stuff. My desk resembles GW's style of battle art where everything is basically within melee range of each other (feel sorry for my Tau models, its very uncomfortable for them to be that close to the enemy).

What, so if 40k dies you don't want to keep your models for display?

Almost all of my stuff is in either foam cases, or in 4/9L really useful boxes with a magnetic sheet on the bottom.

I store mine in boxes I get from Amazon and make up some foam to line the sides to protect them.

display cases or book shelves for most of the painted stuff
shelves or plastic boxes or carbdoard boxes for the assembled stuff
scattered across the desk for stuff that's being painted (and that can be a long, long process)

Some are in a glass case, but most are in tackle boxes, and a smaller fewer are just thrown in a pile in a box.

I live in a small apartment for the time being so I make do with the cupboards above the fridge.
The eventual plan is a 6x4' board to go long with the 'soup' and one day it'll all be displayed in a 12x2' glass case.

Mostly army cases. Unbuilt/unpainted/half done in underbed storage boxes. Others in cardboard boxes, loose pluck trays, a few on a display shelf, on the painting desk....

All over the place.
- The Cupboard of Shame, which contains a lot of miscellaneous troops and projects
- Additional cardboard and plastic boxes for mostly unpainted minis.
- Two figure cases for carrying miniatures out of my home for play, currently half empty
- Two IKEA glass display cases for what I consider to be showcase quality work, contest winning dioramas and a couple of fragile Forge World pieces
- One shelf above my bed for an assortment of (very dusty) painted models.
- On top of the bookshelf for boxed up model kits that I swear I'll get around to one day, guv, honest.

Display cabinet:
I also have a mini and half Tablewar case that I'll sometimes have models sitting in if I'm moving around (going to try and get myself a full case this year at Adepticon though).

I keep mine in foam (mostly) and then in large plastic containers. Like giant Tupperware. Sometimes I just take that whole thing with me when I need to transport them somewhere. It's a fairly inexpensive solution and suits my needs.
Though I'm going to be trying something different. I'm gonna get some cheap cookie sheets and some threaded rods and make magnet platforms. So like a magnarack, but a lot cheaper and meant to fit in plastic containers.

Is a shelf not a kind of display platform? I mean I guess you could be trying to separate out regular shelf from display case, but it doesn't seem clear.
Also not particularly clear is the case option. I mean I store most of my miniatures in plastic case(s), but that case was not designed for miniatures. And it most certainly doesn't display them.

I got a shelf but only because it's hard to store things in trees in the winter. Squirrels and owls and snow get first dibs.

I keep my 40K stuff in plastic bins - the infantry ones have dividers to hold 20 figures or 15, depending on make.
My Star Wars Armada stuff is in Herr foam containers.
I keep my Tau stuff in a fishing tackle box. I only now realize how ironic that is...

40k- old style GW case and an open wooden display box on my painting desk
LotR- old style GW case, with extras in the "drawer of shame"
Blood Bowl- moved into drawer of shame after our season ended
Batman/DCU- largest ModiFX case available. Fits my very large collection in its entirety, although is nearly full
Bushido- drawer of shame
Bolt Action- the largest newer style GW case, although the case is 3/4 empty
Malifaux- a second ModiFX case, also nearly full
The Other Side- cardboard box. Storage for this game is quite awkward
As you can see, I don't really store things outside of their modes of transport, mainly because I don't own much in the way of displaying things. If I had a glass cabinet my LotR and Batman stuff would at least be in there, probably also Blood Bowl

I keep mine in the case. I buy a lot of foam and keep them in containers. Dusty miniatures make me uncomfortable.
