I'm looking at the set-up for my first 1000 pt build just to get an idea. Both lists follow a similar idea/similar units, one more hero-heavy, the other not so much. I've not forgot about other units (e.g. warlocks), just good at the basics for now and will look at them later.

The general question is am I better off with a higher point hero version:

Slaughter Queen on Cauldron (330 pts)
Hag Queen (60 pts)

30 Witch Aelves (270 pts)
10 Sisters of Slaughter (120 pts)
10 Khinerai Heartrenders (80 pts)
10 Blood Sisters (140 pts)

1000 pts total

...or a lower point hero version with more fodder?

Slaughter Queen (100 pts)
Hag Queen (60 pts)

30 Witch Aelves (270 pts)
10 Sisters of Slaughter (120 pts)
10 Khinerai Heartrenders (160 pts)
10 Blood Sisters (280 pts)

990 pts total

Another question is should I be trying to get in a caster at 1000 pts or just hold off til 2000 (e.g. get rid of some Heartrenders)? She's not too expensive, something else I'm thinking on.

Not sure about the 10 Khinerai. An MSU squad that you can use to cap objectives would serve you better than a 10 man squad that dies to a stiff breeze since you'll be buffing closer to the Slaughter and Hag Queen.

Also, your first list is wrong because 10 Blood Sisters is 280 not 140 and 10 Heartrenders is 160 not 80.

Personally I'd skip the blood sisters and go for a larger Sisters of Slaughter. Use the 6 inch pile-in and extra range on the weapons to your advantage. Then - while Witches and Sisters are killing stuff - use the Khinerai for objective capping.
