Subject: New AoS and Beasts of Chaos Player

So in this new year I've decided to jump into AoS after finishing my last 40K project and getting over my long lasting grumpiness over the death of WHFB (it's still there a tiny bit though). I was drawn to the Beasts of Chaos when they came out last year and just after Christmas bought 2 of the Start Collecting boxes (thankfully before the price rise) assuming that was a good start. I've really got no idea where to start with list building, my understanding of AoS is quite basic (I don't have any of the books yet). So here are my questions:
1) Are the two start collecting boxes good enough to get some smallish games in to learn the mechanics without making any other purchases? (Although I've gathered getting a herdstone at some point might be a good idea)
2) How should I equip my Ungors? I originally thought all 20 as raiders with bows, but after looking around online I'm not so sure.
3) Is having two Great Bray Shamans a good idea? Or should I try to convert one to a Beastlord?
4) Are Brayhorns and Banner's worth taking in the Bestigor and Ungor units?
5) Cygor or Ghorgon? Or one of each?
I'm not looking for a list that is super competitive, just something to help me learn the game, have some fun, and a good base to keep building the army from.
Thanks in advance!

1 - Yes, but the herdstone is essential since it is a key part of your allegiance.
2 - You will eventually need 3 battleline slots for a 2000 point list (the default for most games) and 10-man ungor units with sword n board are a good way to do that. As an added bonus they are also ideal for sacrificing at the herdstone to summon in fresh troops/monsters.
3 - Yup. You will want one to stay near the herdstone and shank ungors (see above) anyways, so having another to roam the field is a good plan. Beastlords are not at all essential, you can do fine without them. At 80 points they aren't bad either but for 120 you can get a doombull which will accomplish a heck of a lot more.
4 - They are free
5 - I would advise putting the feet & torso together then proxying them to find out which you like as they are very different monsters. Failing that one of both.

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.
I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games. |

I think I would vote for Cygors if you run Darkwalkers Greatfray, or even just no Fray. Outflanking boulder throwing is pretty awesome, especially for targeting pesky backfield wizards, especially if they're Idoneth. Plus unbinding spells is useful and they can distract and fight to some extent. But I agree, give both a whirl in some games and see what to glue permanently, though creative magnetizing might be possible.
Bray Shaman are really cool for giving the Brayherd units an extra 3" movement. That's super duper useful, plus spells.
Definitely get the Herdstone. I also recommend the Beasts Endless Spells, though not essential. The dice are cool too!

A bit of a related question. Rather than starting a new thread.
But if moving over from Fantasy Battle, did everything for beasts of chaos make the new book?

Razorgor Chariots did not make the switch, nor did any of the named characters.

Are Tuskgors different than Razorgors?

Ya, Tuskgors and Razorgors are different, the former being roughly boar sized, while the latter are bear sized. Razorgors still exist, but the option to have them pull a chariot didn’t make the transition to AoS because they had no official model. Can still use them as “counts as” Tuskgor chariots though.

Yes. The model was/is hideous as well.
