So now Marneus Calgar, the epitome of an Ultramarine, is now a Primaris.
The floodgates have opened for "normal" marines to be selected for upgrading to Primaris marines.

Does this now mean that

a) classic space marine sets will soon no longer be sold by GW?

b) more and more Primaris selections will come out to replace the old SM squads? eg replacement tactical squads etc

c) Can we just say our classic marines are in the process of becoming Primaris but haven't finished yet so they can be fielded as either/or?

A) Not until they start making almost no money from them most likely

B) Yes

C) Yes, unless a rule by GW or a TO says otherwise in the future

A) No

B)More Primaris will come out, but most likely they will not replace any classics like Primaris upto now haven’t.

C)Up to you I guess?

Bear in mind the upgrade process in the fluff is currently a difficult process with a high chance of failure, so not really a good idea to upgrade every classic marine if a lot of them will die doing it. We only know of 3 examples of marines being upgraded so far in fluff.

They may keep "classic Marines" around to brand as "Horus Heresy" models, though given the sheer amount of Heresy stuff that they haven't bothered to release in plastic (Assault, Breacher, Seeker, Recon...) that may be wishful thinking.

a) No.

b) Characters only I'm thinking.

c) Sure why not, but you gotta follow wysiwyg.

How many of these "I scurrd primaris will take ovah!" threads must there be tho, really?

GW is being very smart to not directly replace Oldmarines. For example, Intercessors are not a true replacement of Tactical because they do not have heavy/special weapon options. This leaves the door open for Tacticals to remain useful (well, as useful as they've always been anyway)

Another example are the upcoming Eliminators, which I thought for sure would be a direct replacement for Sniper Scouts.
But as they are a Heavy choice and do not have the ML/HB option, it leave room for Scouts as an option.

The issue I personally have with this trend is that it actually prevents you "proxying" OldMarines as Primaris.
You and I can easily dismiss minor differences in size/aesthetics, but the wargear options are a must. By not directly matching options on new Primaris kits, GW has ensured that it will be impractical to sub-out you current Marines.
You'll eventually have to start buying kits for the right options, and once you start down that path, you may as well fully upgrade because mixing OldMarines and Primaris (for the same units) does a disservice to you and your opponent

Eventually, however, I do anticipate enough Primaris units being released that fill the same niches as Oldmarines that completely replacing your army will have the same net-result.
Unit A may not do the same as Unit B, but Unit C will cover what's missing, etc
