A Protoss colony world

Lots of finished entries to look at this time around! Hard to narrow it down to 5 votes. Rather than comment on who I voted for, I'll just comment on everybody! Here goes:

queen_annes_revenge: 30k Morty looks pretty good. The detail at the bottom of his cape turned out amazing!

SmallChanges: I love kitbashes and conversions, and this one turned out great! AoS Stormcast Eternals make a pretty good core for a Space Marine character.

Midget Gems: Okay, I say this about a lot of your entries, but this might be your best one yet! Keep pushing the envelope buddy! I wish I could vote for it more than once!

Nevelon: Solid work on the Ultras. I love the old-school Plasma Cannon!

Flinty: That's an interesting take on Necromunda models, going with the gaudy colors like that. They make me think a little bit of Power Rangers.

ZoBo: I can't tell if the rider is really in control of those Squigs or if he's just hanging on for dear life! Awesome work!

CREEEEEEEED: I don't think I've ever seen a Dreadnought in camo before. It looks good like that. Pity you didn't have time to finish the base, but the model itself is nice.

Hawky: I love old-school models, and that female commissar is one of my favorites. You did good on her!

DrGiggles: The model looks fine, but I wish we had some closer photos to appreciate the detail better.

Big Mac: The head on the pole looks awesome, and I love the war paint on the guy's face!

ZergSmasher: Honestly I'm very surprised I have 8 votes at the time I write this. I didn't think my Spindle Drones turned out that good. I wish I'd done a better job on the bases; I rushed them and so painted the lines way too thick instead of making sure my brush had a nice fine tip.

Rybrook: The skull-faced Chaplain is one of my favorite Space Marine models, and you did him and the other guys justice.

Jjohnso11: Yikes, he looks mean! I like how his teeth look rotten.

Lipsdapips: Some really well-done Marines facing off there. The Ultramarine in particular turned out amazing!

JustALittleOrkish: I'm envious of your ability to paint yellow so cleanly. I really like the bases too!

Maharg: Ah, the Termie from Deathwatch: Overkill. Nice to see models from that set still getting some love. He looks awesome!

Captain Brown: Those Guard models look pretty badass. The faces in particular impress me.

AUGManiac: I wouldn't want to get on that Goliath guy's bad side. Very well-painted model indeed!

Suzuteo: I like the blue color for the cloth; it really pops next to the drab metal of the rest of the model.

Ezki: Now that looks like the kind of Warbike a Big Mek would ride into battle. Even has room for his trusty Grot assistants!

Paradigm: Theoden turned out amazing! Makes me want to pick up a copy of the Pelennor Fields box!

dukeofbeer: Interesting pattern on her torso. The overall color scheme looks pretty great as well.

Possumcraft: That's kind of an interesting concept, taking Space Marines and making them look like Catachans. Gives them more of a "Rough & Ready" feel.

feltmonkey: I gotta appreciate anything Dark Angels related, and I have to say you did the Lion proud with those models. I only hope my own Aggressors turn out almost as well when I get around to painting them.

Modock: Another month, another amazing set of Infinity models. Save some talent for the rest of us, will ya?

Chris56: That's an interesting bust. Looks great, especially the freehand detail on the shoulder!

Pneumo: Ah good, some love for the XX Legion! I love how the armor looks kind of iridescent, perfect for Alpha Legion guys.

vejut: I love the Roman look that turtle has going on. You know how to pick cool models for these things!

Not only are there plenty of entries this time around, but the overall quality is very high! Everyone should be proud of their entries. We really did end this challenge season with a bang! Shout out as always to Paradigm for running these things in the middle of his busy college life. See you all in the next challenge!

Maharg, Captain Brown, and Modock get my votes this month. Maharg's terminator is no-nonsense, clean, and well-rounded; Captain Brown's command squad has awesome chemistry and a neat scheme; Modock's work is clean as ever and the paint schemes are extraordinarily well executed.

Thank you Zerg, ill keep trying

I ended up voting for loads this month, lots of good stuff

queen_annes_revenge: Great work again Queen, the detail on the freehand is amazing.

SmallChanges: A nice combination of parts to make a very unique looking model, well done

Midget Gems: Its been on my list of conversions to do for quite some time now and when the Shokkjump Dragstra came out I bought it straight away just waiting for the right themed month and when I had the time, which after an illness turns out I didnt have enough time (i had to fire up the flux capacitor twice ) but still glad I tried it. Hope you guys like it, I'm always a bit nervous when I try to convert something so renowned. Thank you for any votes.

Nevelon: Looks like these guys are ready to storm a breach, the big gun looks cool.

Flinty: Wow some really vibrant colours on these guys, nice OSL on the big plasma gun.

ZoBo: I think the great white squid is my favourite, its gums really stand out . Awesome work all round, but what about the unhappy msuhroom, it thought they where fun guys? (sry)

CREEEEEEEED: Really cool work with the camo on your dreadnought

Hawky: cool old model, with a big gun and nice colour scheme.

DrGiggles: On the bigge pics you can see the nice extra detail you have added like the mud on the boots and the blood on the sword, cool model.

Big Mac: Blue strips down their eyes make them look pretty scary and brings them all together as a squad nicely

ZergSmasher: Your painting on these works really well and suits the models, a sort of aged white and the red lens draws the eye to the middle of the model very well.

Rybrook: Nice diea to give them all the same left should pad they really look like a squad. The scroll work looks nicely aged as well.

Jjohnso11: Nice model and looks like you have some good detail but the photos make it hard to see

Lipsdapips: Nice scene and story to these 2 models. Your edge highlighting is always spot on.

JustALittleOrkish: I find Yellow very ahrd to paint, you have done a good job with these guys and looks like some very detailed lightning on the claws.

Maharg: Good highlights, I like that you highlighted the armour and the gun differently so show different materials/colours.

Captain Brown: Nice camo work CB and the Commisar really stands out with that bright red compared to the troops.

AUGManiac: you have done well with the Hazard stripes, he looks very Necromunda.

Suzuteo: You are very good a replicating your paint schemes, I can tell straight away its one of yours, a whole army like this will look great.

Ezki: Love this conversion, I like that you have taken a older model and given it new life. Your model really suits a big mek

Paradigm: Really nice model with a lot of action in its posse and also really well painted, well done mate. and thank you for doing all this even during your busy RL times.

dukeofbeer: You have managed to get some really intricate detail on the armour, it that all freeman?

Possumcraft: Really good Gear of War conversions, they instantly make me think of that series, well done

feltmonkey: Really like these models and your Salamanders.... erm I mean Dark Angels look great, you have done really well with the scratches to the armour

Modock: Another wonderfully painted entry from you, your famously smooth highlights with some really intricate camo pattern is a feast for the eyes

Chris56: Wonderfully painted, the jade is the real star for me on this one, it looks so good. The skin tone is really well shaded and highlighted too, I lovely finish to the year from you. Don't be too hard on yourself for the freehand, its good but I'm sure iin the future you will do better but the only way to get better is to keep trying it.

Pneumo: A nice metallic blue to the armour, and the skins looks good n the head as well

vejut: Love the Roman Legionary Turtle, you have painted his cloak and shell very well

Good Luck everyone

Thx, the blue strip war paint is what the art in the IG codex shows for the Armageddon Ork Hunters; I painted the platoon but submitted the best 5 imo for this competition. I enjoyed your entry as well, though I thought the text would fit better in ork glyphs.

I just don't understand why people keep claiming that the model I made "old" and "old-school". You are clearly mistaking it with some other model. It's a model from Wargameexclusive and it's surely not that old.

Sorry about that! I know that GW had a female Commissar model a long time ago and she looked somewhat like that (low-cut top and everything). I thought that this was that model. It's still cool though, and my comment on the fact that you did a good job still stands!

My apologies Hawky, it felt like an oldhammer model I'd seen before. I think I was getting it confused with this one.

Thanks DrGiggles and Big Mac, in this instance I wanted the sign to be as similar to the movie as I could make it, I could have done the DMC in glyphs though, didn't think of it at the time.

Hello everyone! I fixed my PC and can give everyone a brief comment. I'd like to say more, but these feedback posts take hours and I need to go to bed!

queen_annes_revenge - The weathering on the armour is nicely done, and I like the pattern around the base of the cloak. Is that freehand or a transfer? It looks really good. The model overall is pretty spectacular. Perhaps it could do with a bit more contrast.

SmallChanges - A cool kitbash. My favorite part is the blue visor. You've gone for a simple basecoat and wash/dip technique, and I wonder if some highlights on the upper part of the model might make it pop a bit more.

Midget Gems - A really great idea, of course. I love the humour and all the references. I have no idea how you force these ork and grot models into the scenes you make. Great work.

Nevelon - Not as clean as your usual painting, but some interesting models. Are they kitbashed?

Flinty - More unusual models, and very colourful! I like the details on the sensors. The two red and blue guys are my favorites. The yellow guy could do with something to create some definition between the armour plates.

ZoBo - That's an absolutely mad and brilliant model. I assumed you must have built the scene yourself, but the official model looks like that! I might have to pick one up myself. Interesting choice to do such a muted colour scheme.

CREEEEEEEED - An interesting idea to do a camo pattern on a dreadnought. The red spot colour adds interest and contrast, as it should do. Shame you couldn't finish the base.

Hawky - Good job on the details such as the eyes, and black and red is a classic colour scheme for this kind of model.

DrGiggles - Looks quite good, but the pictures are tiny! I can't make anything out.

Big Mac - I like the facepaint and the tattoos, and the fact that you've varied the skintones. Is one of them holding a chaos frisbee? I think a spray of matte varnish might help a bit, as they're quite shiny.

ZergSmasher - I really like these. It's a very simple paintjob, but effective and really sinister. One thing you've done that really adds to them is to concentrate the lighter tones towards the top of the model and left the lower areas dark. That's a good idea on any model, as it directs the eye towards the more important parts of a model, usually the face. In this case the carapace.

Rybrook - A nice smooth black, good details, and good uniformity across the squad.

Jjohnso11 - I would have liked to see a more interesting base, but a decent paint job on a characterful model. I've got to question his sartorial choices though. His whole arse is hanging out.

Lipsdapips - Lovely clean painting as ever from you. The axe is an obvious highlight, and as usual I like the way you photograph the models from below to give them a heroic look. I'm curious, as you have very much mastered your GW edge highlighting style - have you ever tried doing any different styles, and settled on that one? I'd love to see some blending from you, or something slightly different from flat colours and perfect edge highlights.

JustALittleOrkish - Lovely yellow tones, very nice freehand chapter symbols. I'm not a massive fan of yellow and white together as a paint scheme personally, but really nice clean painting.

Maharg - Good intricate details, and what must have been pretty painstaking edge-highlighting on the black!

Captain Brown - Very nice clean painting, and an eye-catching squad, particularly the big hat. I mean, it's a REALLY big hat.

AUGManiac - Love the hazard stripes, and the texturing on the metal areas.

Suzuteo - Nice work on the metallic areas, and a great conversion. I would like to see a couple more photos from other angles, though.

Ezki - Good fun orkish stuff. Very nice, clean painting.

Paradigm - Great atmospheric work as usual from you. Nicely done. Theoden looks a bit pink in the face, like he's voted leave and is furious with someone who's said something liberal.

dukeofbeer - Nice work. I like her half-smile. How long did all those stripes take you?

Possumcraft - Really nice. Great conversions, and I like the way you've highlighted/weathered the black armour. Headband with a skull on it is an excellent touch.

feltmonkey - I'm really pleased with these from a technical point of view. I like how the blending and highlights came out - it looks like armour, and pretty much just as metallic as I wanted it to. They're a bit subtle and not particularly eye-catching - you don't see the areas of highlight unless you realise they're painted on - things like the upturned panel around the neck, and the knees, took hours of work but you kind of see it as just the light reflecting off the armour. Which was the point. But still. As sometimes happens, I wasn't sure whether to do any weathering and scratches, but I'm really glad I did as it's the best bit of the miniatures.

Modock - I mean just breathtaking skill on display here. Pinpoint details, completely perfect blends, and just to show off, an intricate and beautifully-executed camo pattern. You talented sod.

Chris56 - Beautiful, spectacular stuff. I love how colourful your work is, and this purpley-blue is just gorgeous. That jade/malachite effect on the shoulder and necklace is superb. Another talented sod.

Pneumo - This is really good. I'm not sure how you converted a plague marine to de-nurgle him, but kudos for managing that. The blue-green colourshift effect on the armour is lovely, as is the highlighing on the... erm, apron? Tabard?

vejut - I always look forward to seeing your animal warriors. This guy is great! Good work on the shield, cloak, and whatever the hairy thing on the top of a helmet is called.

Great work everybody! See you next month!

Thank you kindly for the feedback Felt (alongside the others who were so kind as to leave a comment ). I have thought about developing my style, yeah. I want to incorporate some subtle zenithal blending or glazes into my work but, in terms of the ultramarines, I'm anxious about the army's consistency. I think it makes sense as a thing to do when I start a new project.

I paint the whole platoon all together typically, do my dark black dudes first, then light black/arabs/tan guys, Mexicans, Asians, then white dudes; mix them among the squad to make it look more natural. The platoon commander is armed with madrobot miniatures tribal command arms(plasma pistol and bladed buckler); IRL they look quite good actually, just the right amount of shine for a jungle fighter, I sprayed them with GW purity seal, I think its just the photo/lighting/auto adjustments in software that's making them a bit dark for my liking.

bladed buckler similar to the regular tribal squad arms shown here:

Thanks! its all freehand on the cloak. I know exactly what you mean about the contrast. It was difficult to get contrast onto him without making his base super dark, which wouldn't have looked that good.

It's been a few months since I wrote the comments for the entries I voted.

Big thank you to Power Elephant, ListenToMeWarriors, ZergSmasher, lipsdapips, Midget Gems and feltmonkey for the votes and for taking
the time to write the comments.

Thanks for the preises but I'm not talented really, but I am very passionate and I have this urge to constantly improve and try new things.
And this challenge made it all happen. Huge for the DakkaDakka challenge (Paradigm).

Let's jump to the votes (I'm gonna write some feedback, I hope you don't mind) :

queen_annes_revenge - I like a lot more FW Mortarion than GW one. It's the human form that does it. You picked the right scheme for him.
I see you did plenty of blending like on the scythe and the cloak which is really well done. The base completes him perfectly.
Also nice touch with the calligraphy. The thing I suggest is that you need to improve your photos.
These are quite washed out and you lose tons of saturation and contrast. Otherwise great job man!

Midget Gems - a true gem! You have this ingenious gift for creating marvelous pieces. Your conversions are so seamless, I just don't know
how the hell you do it. The story it tells, the humor, the little touches and so on. I don't think much can be added really...maybe a little bit of dry
pigments on the asphalt and tiles but that's nitpicking. Kudos MG!!

ZoBo - that hit me unexpectedly. The albino squig is golden, I don't think I've seen one before. I really like when people try new combinations.
The white is sooo smooth, great work there. Also the slimy gums looks very pristine.

ZergSmasher - nice job on these. I fancy the color scheme and the blends are quite smooth. Also the lenses add that little pop to the mini.
Are the bases done? Those could use a bit more work.

Lipsdapips - yep clean as ever with precision to boot. The lightning on the axe and the burned nozzle add that special extra to the minis.

Maharg - very smooth paint job with with seamless highlights. Great work!

Ezki - smooth orc skin...check, orc pattern...check, rusty junk vehicle...check, orcish in every way possible...I love it. Awesome entry!
I would just like to see some dirt on the road but that's about it.

Paradigm - very characterful mini. The cloth/armor is really well done, every gap and cranny is nicely visible. Also I like the subtle color shifts
on the scalemail.

feltmonkey - those are beautiful! The green tone is perfect. IMO that is the right look for a space marine...lotsa battle damage. I know it takes time
but it goes a long way. Also nice move with the dirt on the feet, it unifies the whole look/atmosphere. Small things like that really brings
the mini to life. Maybe it's the pictures but I miss some edge highlights?

Chris56 - smooooth color blends which is harder to do on bust like that. Amazing job,Chris. The jade ornament is just crazy with the texture
painted freehand. I only think that the shadows are a bit too saturated. Usually the darkest parts are the dullest and desaturated.
Maybe that's just me.

Well that's it from me and see ya next month.

Thanks mate!

Cheers for the encouragement on the weathering and scratches. They take ages, and make me go cross-eyed trying to get the precision, but you're right - it adds a lot. Without that, the miniatures would have been very plain. There are edge highlights, but I didn't go round every edge. They are mainly on the upper edges on armour plates, and more on the upper half of the model. I've been reading Jérémie Bonamant Téboul's fantastic book, Figopedia, and trying to put some of his ideas and instructions about light into practice. I was thinking about where my imagined light source would hit the marines. I'll probably get further into the book and he'll tell me to highlight round every edge...

While I'm here, huge thanks to Midget Gems and ZergSmasher for the comments, and an even huger thanks to Paradigm for organising the challenge. I forgot to say this in my comments post.

Midget Gems wrote:ZergSmasher: Your painting on these works really well and suits the models, a sort of aged white and the red lens draws the eye to the middle of the model very well.

Thanks! I really just followed the Warhammer TV painting guide for them for the most part, except for how I did the eye lenses.
feltmonkey wrote:ZergSmasher - I really like these.

Thanks, this is the first time I've done something like that, concentrating the light towards the top of a model like that. I liked how the ones on the box art looked and since the video tutorial made them look similar I went with it.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with how the blends turned out. Much better than I usually do on stuff like that. As for the bases, yes they are finished. They look spare like that because unlike other models I've done I wanted them to look like they are walking across a polished tile floor with kind of a soft glow coming up. They didn't turn out as good as I'd hoped, but that's because I rushed.

Thanks for the feedback and votes everyone; I'm honestly shocked at how many votes I've gotten. This is my best challenge ever based on the number, even outdoing Mortarion, my entry from December 2017 (which I still consider to be my best work).

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

As usual Modock and Chris56 were a cut above the rest, but well done to all, I don't think there were any weak entries this month.

You love the T-Rex. Its both a hero and a Villain in the first two movies. It is the "king" of dinosaurs. Its the best. You love your T-rex.
Then comes along the frakking Spinosaurus who kills the T-rex, and the movie says "LOVE THIS NOW! HE IS BETTER" But...in your heart, you love the T-rex, who shouldn't have lost to no stupid Spinosaurus. So you hate the movie. And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

Just a quick comment: My model is not a conversion. He is the brand new Tech-Priest Manipulus from the Kill Team: Arena set. He's probably one of the first stock models that I have painted in awhile; a lot of my other models are conversions.

Well that was a close one at the top! And some very high scores to round out the year as well.

In hotly contested third place, Lipsdapips' duelling duo of an Ultramarines Lord Executioner and an Iron Warriors Chosen:

Taking second place, Midget Gems with the DelORKean!

And with the final win of the year, taking the victory by just a single vote out of nearly 400, Modock's Kazaks:

Congrats all! An epic round to close the rotation! Once we have the final update to the League Table, I'll do a thread announcing the overall winner. In the mean time, how about checking out the Retrospective thread and celebrating your entries over the last year?

Wow Second (just) in this month feels like an honour. Thank you for all the votes and kind comments

Congrats Lipsdapips nice work putting those two models together (and for the bigger scene including these guys on your blog) and to Modock on the win (and rightly so, awesome stuff) I think you were always at least a few votes ahead

And well done to everyone, looks of great quality entries this month. I will get the League table done asap and then try to get some stats out as well.

Don't forget Nevs end of year thread here
