Hey guys, I've started my Necron Army. I always liked the ceramics style for the 'crons but couldn't find a color scheme I actually liked that felt right to my army and its story. Something OLD, something very rich but understated, something a bit menacing.

I had started pursuing an idea of Mediterranean/greek thing, light brown neutrals with blue, gold and white accents but then I remembered this ****ing awesome pottery I had seen in an old magazine somewhere. My idea is to keep the lower portions
of the infantry glossy black and as you go up it gives way to more of the warm yellow/orange/tan. There will be a lot of black edging and some little patterns, and occasional "Kraken" designs- tentacle swirl on a shoulderpad and that sort- to display the creepy
Lovecraftian **** that I loved about the crons back before 5th. Then some metallics added to the characters.

I'm confident in my freehand but not really my color coordination so how would you achieve this paint scheme, the aging and so on? Thanks

I think you'd actually be slightly better off with a super dark brown (black brown basically), and the yellow is definitely more ochre-coloured. What brand of paints do you use?

I would prime the surface in white and ink/wash it in yellow-orange, perhaps yellow-orange gradient.
For the old look perhaps paint the black areas in the dark terracotta red color or Burnt-Umber and use the pure black as accent color to freehand the details and thin lines.
So all your black lines and areas are "Outlined" by your terracotta red color
That way the white would shine through the transparent yellow-orange and make the yellow-orange look very bright.

If I was going for the Greek-pottery feel for the armor, I would reply on my freehand in panting in the patterns and the line designs on the arms and legs primarily...
Perhaps this image would provide the inspiration. I tried something like that for the guard unit.

Perhaps this helps.

I would do this on black primer with the base coat of a very dark brown like burnt Auburn, then create a highlight in the center with a lighter brown like beasty Brown, then coat all of that with a dark orange color and then yellow over the orange.

Give me a few days and I can demonstrate with some pictures

I'm using basic Reaper paints and I go to the local game store to pick up Citadel as I need. I have a bunch of reaper browns and some Citadel yellow, looks like I'll need to haul myself to the store and get some orange, as if I need an excuse.
The advice on using brown as the main dark tone is awesome. I'm pretty new painting minis something other than metallic with accents of other metallic. The arms and legs is cool , although I might save that for the elites and HQ.
Please get back to me if you come up with some samples pictures! gonna get started tomorrow on the warriors.
