I was wondering if there is a source that gives us insight as to how marines progressed through the ranks prior to and during the Horus Heresy. Obviously scouts as we knew them in 40k prior to the primaris don't exist in the HH and I couldn't find a reference to the progression a recruit goes through once they entered the legion. I'd assume they'd start in a tactical squad or tactical support squad but that's conjecture on my part based in part by the (now defunct) progression that 40k marines used to have. I'd assume there is some variation between the legions as the centuries progressed during the Great Crusade but I couldn't in my admittedly limited resources find a baseline. I hoped that maybe it was covered either in one of the HH FW tomes or a BL novel.

Horus Heresy 6 gives us this guy, who was a new recruit to the Iron Warriors and a tactical marine right off the bat. That's probably how it's done, at least in the Iron Warriors. New recruits are assigned to the line infantry tactical squads and move up from there.

it's likely marines where assigned to differant roles as needed and trained specificly for it so there was no progression

Thanks for finding that. Like you said, it may be specific to the very pragmatic IW but it's a start. I hadn't thought of looking at the art pages.

I could see that being the case in the Ultramarines legion where recruits might be assigned according to their individual aptitude mixed with the region's need at the moment.

One of the White Scars novels (Scars?) follows a character from recruitment.

It does seem to vary Legion to Legion - for the Iron Hands it's either who has the most bionics or who was impressed Ferrus the most, for example. In "A Lesson in Iron" he's trying to decide who his new First Captain will be (and both his options are sergeants, oddly enough):

'That’s more than far enough,’ said Harik Morn, veteran sergeant of the Avernii Clan’s First Order, eyeing the stained oculus view as though it left a sour taste in his mouth. ‘The orks seem to think it can be done,’ said Santar, grinning across at the tanned old Terran from the left hand of Ferrus’ throne. Ferrus’ gene-seed imparted little beauty, and joviality still less, and none in the Legion typified the absence of those traits like Sergeant Gabriel Santar. His grin was like a tectonic fracture. With the first captain that Ferrus had inherited from Amadeus DuCaine and the era of the Storm Walkers falling in battle to the alien gorge, it would be one of Morn or Santar who bore the mantle next. Both of them knew it, but Ferrus was in no hurry to make that decision. He wanted to see them prove their worth, knowing there was another ready to claim the honour should they fail.

Yeah, I read that one too (the one where the White Scar captain resented being inducted into the Scars instead of the Sons of Horus) but that picked up when he was iirc a captain and skipped everything inbetween. I don't recall it saying what he did when he got to the scars unless I'm forgetting stuff from it (possible...).

That's the one - I'm trying to remember if he was an ordinary recruit or at some kind of Officer Training School.

That to me suggests companies promote from within and you rarely have a case of captains being reassigned to new companies.
