I've never really been a great fan of the plastic models for the Space Marine bike, not even the Ravenwing branded one's. I have however always loved this White Dwarf cover from 1992 (I'm guessing it's from before GW established the Ravenwing look and iconography) and wish the Space Marine/Ravenwing bikes would look like this -




So, I'd like to convert a Space Marine bike to look similar to that. I note that the 3rd bike in the background seems to have a giant eagle on it's front end, kind of like Judge Dredds Lawmaster in the 1995 Stallone film, I'm not sure how that'd look but it might be cool, although probably not particularly feasible to do.

I've not looked at a Space Marine/Ravenwing bike model for a long while though, however I do understand that the current Ravenwing Knights bike is slightly different to the standard Space Marine bike (separate exhausts for a start), although other than that I am at a loss for ideas on how to proceed...

Anyone here any ideas on if/and how the existing Space Marine, or Ravenwing Bike can be converted to look this way?

Just leave off the front fairing and cut and reposition the handlebars and you're most of the way there. Need to snip away the front mud guard as well but that should be doable easily enough.

Sounds easy enough. And I've been able to give this some more thought.

I've looked at sprues on ebay auctions and the front mudguard will have to be taken off completely. Having looked at the Chaos bike I'm going to use the hub from that (without the spike), to save scratch building it, plus it looks more like the front wheel hub in that cover painting, and I'll probably have to use styrene rod/tube or some brass tube to make the rest of the front forks as I don't think the forks on the Chaos bike would look right if I fit them to the space marine bike.

Replicating the look of the exhaust piping of the bike in that cover painting won't be possible I think, without major surgery/complicated scratch building (which I'm not up to doing), so unfortunately I'll just have to go with what's already there. Seems to me the Space Marine bike's engine block/exhaust manifold is undersized, certainly doesn't look as beefy as in that cover painting!?!

The rider will be the hardest part...

I think the trick with the rider will be to get his legs, groin part and torso positioned in such a way that he's standing up more than a normal rider is, as per that cover painting, so that I can move back the foot rests thus making the exhaust manifold piping visible, but at the same time ensure he is positioned so that his arms (at least the left one) can reach the modified handlebars, without it looking all wrong...
