I'm trying to work out this yellow. I have Averland sunset applies nicely, and I washed with Casandora yellow. It came out relatively smoothly. It's a bit too ocher even reddish in the deepest areas. Anyways I tried layering on flash glitz yellow, and it's super bright its definitely a jarring transition and doesn't mix well with the averland sunset. Also I'm layering on super watered down layers but it's either clumpy on spots or runs and leaves those weird rings where the pigment gathers on the edge of the water.

I guess I just feel like I have no control over this color, and I'm getting a bit frustrated with it. any advice?

Dude I feel your pain! Yellows a mother to work with.

What's your primer colour?
If you're doing yianded, would it not make sense to prime yellow. wash & highlight and apply blue on top ?

I do yellow elements on my scheme. My yellow goes from black to yellow into he following way: Black primer, then multiple layers of the following --> Doom bull brown ---> Balor Brown --> Averland sunset --->; Yriel Yellow ---> Flash Gitz yellow.

Edit - You could also mixy up these to get the transition shade but I would rather apply two layers so its consistent perosnally. Allbeit I get lazy so sometimes comes out a bit chalky as I make the layer a bit heavier every now and then to get to the top shade sooner.

Yellow is hard mode.

I'd recommend only putting wash in crevices and only highlight the edges. Most yellows get chalky the moment the water/paint ratio passes a mysterious point. I'd say maybe use Lahmian Medium instead of water when doing thin layers, but I'd avoid trying for subtle shading in the first place unless you've got an airbrush.

The yellow of the Spiritseer's staff in this image is just a basecoat, wash and edge highlight, nothing fancy. IIRC the wash was Reikland Fleshshade, though I was using Vajello Scrofulous Brown as the base 'yellow'.

Bodt

you need to re layer your base colour over the wash (this is true of all colours, not just yellow) before highlighting.

When highlighting, you should mix you highlight with your base colour and steadily increase the amount of highlight colour until you reach the desired tone or end up with pure highlight. this ensures a smooth transition, and will rid you of your jarring colour boundary

This is my current state of affairs.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Crisis averted! Went and picked up a pot of Yriel yellow, and that is going on nicely over the averland sunset. I'm applying 1:1:1 Yriel:Averland:Water and it's going very nicely. Thanks for the tips.

A little thick where I'm painting over the flash gits on the legs but I'm much happier with the look now. from here I'll probably do a layer of just yriel, then ill highlight with flash gitz. Going flash gitz straight away was just way to overpowering, and it didn't mix well with averland sunset.

Yellow is almost as bad as white to paint with a brush. Your result does look good, but I guess the closer you look the less happy you are with the paintjob in close detail.

When I started an Iyanden army a few years ago, it took me a while to get to a state where I'm ok with how it.

This shot I took of wraithconstructs while rebasing them shows the progression:

The knights on the left and on the right end of the lineup too bright early attempts, as is the Wraithseer. The knight on the left was my first, and I messed up resulting in different shades of blue.
Later, I worked with zenital highlighting and the resulting natrual shading on each part.

My advice - get an airbrush - prime black with zenithal white highlight - apply successive layers of dark to light shades of yellow over the primer.
