The Shadows

in M39, a Ultramarine Successor Chapter came under political fire from the local Inquisitor after one of their more famous Captains committed acts of Heresy.

The rumors were true; in an effort to save his men from death by Ork DAKKA, he joined the Tau and crushed the Orks. But, as part of their deal, they were given a Tech-Priest for interrogation. The Inquisitor investigated, killed the Tau army, saved the Tech-Priest, and attempted to banish the Captain.

But the Chapter-Master had refused to let his best Captain go - they were good friends before and after Augmentation, and the Captain had saved many of his men's lives by running out onto the battlefield and dragging them to medics.

But of course, the Inquisitor had other plans.

You see, the Inquisitor had let the Space Marines draw from his worlds for recruits, and as such, the Inquisitor basically controlled nearly half of the chapter. The Chapter-Master was replaced by one chosen by the Inquisitor, and as a result the old CM died.

As the rightful heir to the title, around half the Chapter joined the Captain's side, and the other half, loyal to the Chapter-Master and the Inquisitor, fought the other side. A small civil war broke out, and the Captain's side escaped with a Long Serpent renamed 'the Imperial Longsword'.

The Captain renamed himself Brother-Captain Validor, and continued his duties as a Space Marine with his new Renegade Chapter, the Banished Brigade.

It's a decent idea for a backstory but the temptation to hit the "yes it's heresy and must be purged" button is hard to resist.

I think it could be improved upon if they had turned on the tau after the orks were dealt with but the inquisitor (for his own reasons) wasn't happy about the initial deal. It keeps them more purely loyal and makes the reasons for their rebellion as exile all the more ironic.

But I like the Banished Brigade. I like the colour scheme and the idea of some renegade loyalists trooping through space on a loyalist but not necessarily pro-inquisitor crusade. It's maybe heresy, maybe the good kind of heresy. The kind that doesn't damn your soul to the void necessarily but maybe gets them on the road to nowhere good.

I'd like to know a little more about their M.O. Post-banishment. What kind of actions do they get involved in? When they show up on the field of battle who's side are they on? What do they fight for now? How do they conduct themselves? What can Joe guardsman expect when a black and red clad Marine steps onto the scene with bolter raised?
