What models did you initially hate and then grow to love? Mine was Kharn, I seriously hated the new model but now its my favourite.

Spartan Assault Tank. Initially I really didn't like it but after getting it I love it (except one sponson that's evil and I hate).

The Land Raider.
Until I got one as part of one of the Crimson Slaughter boxed sets, I thought they were big, dumb plastic BAWKES. After building mine, I came to appreciate it a lot more. For the longest time it was my centerpeice unit even if the rules for it haven't been all that great during the time I have played 40k.

You must be a new player then. The first landraider was only available by postal order and it looked terrible in retrospect. The land raider today looks amazing, especially compared to the proteus model we had back in the day.

I was not a big fan of the carnifex kit. The legs were monopose, the heads were mostly dumb. The shell plates were 2/3 bad. Not a fan.

Then I realized how damn useful the fex torso is for nid conversions. I have made harpies, exocrines, malanthropes, all kinds of gak out of a fex torso base. It's probably the single most useful nid kit for me.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Well I haven't played any Donald Featherstone games, but I wouldn't say I am new player either. I started collecting Citadel models since mid-7th ed (about 3 years), but have regularly played miniatures wargames games since about 2012. And D&D with minis since the early 90's. I still have a bunch of metal goblins, orcs and kobolds along with several of my character models and few odds and ends I used back when I played 2nd ed D&D. Remember 90s rock is now classic rock.

Like I said my Land Raider was part of one the Crimson Slaughter expansion boxes that I believe was supposed to expand the 6th edition Dark Vengeance. I wouldn't have bothered buying it separately but the boxed set was pretty cheap since it had basically sat around for a year or more and the gaming store probably didn't want it taking up space anymore. I got the distinct impression 40k had all but died in my area during that time so little product locally was moving at the time.

The Riptide, not that I hated the model so much as I hated it being a "do everything" unit that sorta stepped on the Tau's whole combined arms playstyle. I still hate Riptide spam but I do like what a Riptide can bring to a list and fill the centerpiece role of an army.

That said the stormsurge is still an abomination and a giant middle finger to the established Tau military doctrine.

A lot of the old metal Necromunda gangs. I wasn't keen on the Goliath, Cawdor or Delaque models when they were released in 1995, but now I quite like them.

Not sure i agree with the overly hyperbolic thread title, though. I can't think of a single GW miniature I "hate".

CSM Possessed.

Now hear me out, I HATED the original models and used them as nothing but CSM bitz and to spruce up my Lords/ Chosen but since Ive grown up and have access to a huge Tyranid bitz box, you can make some pretty incredible looking possessed out of the box with some minor changes.

Plus they're great on the table since the rhino with the berzerkers always gets the aggro before them!

Plague marines.
They are way to "flashy" with bells, flashy bits, and cartoony mouths everywhere. And the GW paintjob on them don't help much..
But when you remove all the bells and flashy bits, and paint them up in a darker theme. The "base" marine under the flash is a fantastic model!

(Also proper old school daemons. I hated them, now I adore them!)

The Stormtalon.

I stopped thinking of it as a fighter, and more like a cold war era soviet helicopter. An ungainly lump of armor and guns that stays in the air less on aerodynamics, and more on just being too mean for anyone to tell it that it can’t fly.

A change in perspective made all the difference. Plus table-top performance helped a bit. Scrappy little guy usually gets a lot done for his points.

Not a tabletop model, but Imperial spaceships. I considered them ugly AF and now I love them. I even had a battleship model printed.

Tyranids as a whole. The concept didn't appeal to me, the models looked strange. But after i built and painted a Trygon as a present for a friend, I looked behind the Starship Trooper Bugs 2.0 and found cool concepts, proper fluff surrounding them and some really awesome models, especially the MCs. And as they now keep the 'we are using gun-bugs that look like SMGs' to a minimum, they really are probably the coolest army I haven't started so far.

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

Dire Avenger helmets.

When I was first getting into the hobby, the factions I liked were Eldar, T'au, and Marines. Someone showed me a box of "Eldar", and I assumed they were guardians. Those helms were *far* too silly to be Guardians!

Decided against T'au, because I wanted to play combined arms. Started Marines, and I'm really glad I did.

About 6 months later, now knowing that those absurd-helms were just Aspect Warriors, I picked up a Battleforce and preordered the upcomming (6E) Codex for Eldar.

Originally built a mechanized infantry army - as I love that concept. But Serpents were so stupidly OP that it ruined most games - didn't matter what they carried, the Serpents were the bulk of my army. Wasn't fun to play (or play against).

So I put together a list that I thought should be fun to play, both with and against. Wanted a infiltrator, a backfield fire support, a squad to hold the frontline, a squad to push. A skirmisher for hitting heavy infantry or light vehicles, and a skirmisher for hitting light infantry or heavy vehicles. Add in a Melta unit in a transport and a beatstick CC, and it's a balanced list that can play any part of the game. An Aspect host, fronted by a pair of 10-man DA squads and lead by Asurmen. It's been my favorite army ever since. Although, what was originally 1500 now needs to get beefed out heavily to fill out 1250, in a world everyone wants to play 2k....

I now *love* Dire Avengers. The only Aspect squad I have more than one of (unless you count both my 3-man CWE Shining Spears and my 3-man Exodite Shining Spears, but they never play together).

I've really turned around on them.

For me it was actually Hellbrutes.

When the first one came out in DV, I hated the design of it. I wanted my "chaos dreadnoughts" back. However, when the full Hellbrute kit dropped, I was really taken with it. Compared to the stale monoposed one from DV, the full kit was full of all kinds of interesting bits.

Repulsor tank.

I didn't like it when it came out. It's turret was too small, and it had too many little rocket boxes and guns sticking out of it in random places.

But it's been growing on me, and I might get one.

You have to go way, way back for mine.

In the 1990s, Imperial Guard sentinels carried assault cannons and were actually quite scary on the tabletop. (At least in 2nd ed) But, there was no model after the egg shaped lead design went OOP. When they came out with a pewter design they were... well, let’s say they looked like the B team was sent in. Boxy, ungainly, monopose, heavy, fragile, expensive, you name it, they failed at it.

Until a friend gave me three as a gift, finding them in a clearance bin.

For some reason all of their faults melted away once “free” was their cost, and they reaped foes for the Emperor for years as a beloved part of my guard army. (Albeit, less effective ones when the assault cannons turned into multi lasers...)
