I was recently cleaning out my gaming collection, and came across some items from my earliest time with Warhammer.

Back in 2nd edition I was young and poor, but I just had to have that sweet 2nd edition starter set, with it's single-pose marines and glorious Genghis Khan orks. To this day I feel like half of all Grotz in the wild came from that starter!

Of course, the 2nd ed starter came with "Datafax" cards for numerous vehicles. I didn't have any extra money to buy those vehicles, and so I made the stuff I attached.

The Ork buggy was crafted out of spare Gorkamorka wheels (They sold a giant bag of them for like $5 for a few months that year) and garbage. The ram prow is a 3.5" floppy disc, the frame is the sprue the wheels came off, the wooden floor boards are from a corndog, the gun is from a broken AT-ST kit, and the orks were left overs from other projects. (I think the gunner was from someone else's Gorkamorka gunner, because the kit had a metal gunner it came with)

Of course, GW didn't make terrain back then, they told you to make it from foamcore. They didn't stop there though, they taught you to make Ork battlewagons from foamcore too, down to including patterns in White Dwarf. So, I set to cutting and glueing and the results are seen here.

What amazes me is, I made these twenty years ago. I never would have imagined a foamcore ruin could survive two decades...

How about you? Do you have any relics of your creations, from when you couldn't afford the "real thing?"

Wow, I just cleaned out all that stuff recently. All of this is from 2nd edition as well.

I had
- Random plastic toy animals (like lions, tigers..) painted red + some wire around the neck -> Khorne Bloodhounds(Beasts?) with brass necklace of Khorne.. the thing that blocks psi
- A rhino made completely out of cardboard. Looks surprisingly convincing, but is just a tad to big, because I didn't account for the thickness of the cardboard when building it... that 1mm adds up
- A Chaos Cybot made entirely out of lego and coins. Tbh looked better than that horrible model GW sold at the time.
- A chaos beastman (comes with one of the paint sets I think?) on top of a plastic rhino (the animal this time, not the tank) -> bloodletter on moloch
- Random hero quest mercs -> chaos cultists
- (Loyal) space marine with a stick and some spikes -> chaos space marine with rocket launcher
- Various evil looking minis from random board games -> chaos sorcerers (needed one of every kind backl in 2nd)
- Loyal terminator with two power-claws painted red -> Korne champion. These sweet claws were just not sold to chaos.
- Some gun-like looking lego bits painted in camo -> Traitor guard heavy weapon teams.

The only thing I have kept is that cardboard rhino

Edit:
Turns out I kept the 'moloch' as well. It has lost one of its spike..screws. :(
Cute face though.

Love it, cool stuff indeed. I miss those days actually. While the models are far cooler now they just don't have the same soul as these creations from our past do they ?

Classic mk1 whirlwind, build from a large square base and spare rhino bitz. One of the more common official kitbashes IIRC.

As an entrepreneurial 11yo that wanted cool stuff but didnt get allowance, I mowed about 10 or so lawns a week to make the scratch for stuff I wanted.

So I had a deodorant landspeeder but that was "official" so...

My buddy's orks had many not gw orks and amalgamations of randomness that my Squats destroyed over & over again.

Back when we where kids my friend made thudd guns (mortar things) from straws and erasors. They looked surprisingly good.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

I loved the conversion/build guides in WD. I made good use of the deodorant landspeeder too, and had a cardboard & square monster base Whirlwind as ranged support.

I even took apart my AT-ST scoutwalker to try and copy Tony Cottrell's scout titan they had in one issue, but never managed to get it to look right. Still got the disembodied legs somewhere!
